The countdown is on !! :D

Even though I already own this gem, I plan on seeing this on the
biggest screen possible !

With a deep fanbase out there, this film is already an instant classic !!

This Oscar nominated film should've won Best Picture, Score, and Cinematography if only Miramax promoted this properly.

Currently 100 % on the tomato meter, with already 100 million made worldwide ! Plus it's voted in the top 250 films of all time at imdb.com !!

Only weakness ? Me overhyping this flick ! ;) So clear your mind when you do see it.

Beautiful. Philosophical . Grace . Hero is a movie that's hard not to like !

Catch it on the big screen as there are some movies that need to be viewed on it's largest scale !

Oh yeah...U.S. trailers make this out to be a real action flick but it's more than that. I wouldn't go in there thinking this is Kill Bill vol.1 in China !

I saw the first trailer the other day on TV for this one......did I hear right that QT did this one?

so is the DVD you have the same as the one coming out? Is it in English?

Yes.

You did see Tarantino's name attached to the film but like the movie Iron Monkey - he has no production credits but is only lending support to the film . To get wider recognition to the U.S. audience.

As Tarantino said in a recent interview....

“People know that if I like a martial arts movie then it’s gotta be good and I think that ‘Hero’ is an absolute masterpiece,” ..... Miramax agreed to bring out a sub-titled version if I included ‘Quentin Tarantino Presents’ in the title. I did and I’m proud to be a part of this amazing work.”

subtitled guys....so some brain power is needed for this ! ;)

btw...the real director of this flick is Zhang Yimou !!! Keep this name in mind come December......:)

Overall, I agree.....The exception to that for me was 'Life is Beautiful' back in '97. **sentimental moment** That movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen, and it's not a HT candidate by any means. The power of that story was truly huge, and VERY well done IMO.

like Iron Monkey, Hero comes out subtitled which is a good call. It's a movie based off chinese history (biased of course) so hearing it dubbed in english would be horrid :)

I will be making a trip to the theater to see this. Luckily, it's at the glorious Senator Theater in Baltimore.

Hello,
My wife and I saw Hero yesterday at the Senator theater. There are probably fifty words I could use to describe this movie: Amazing!, Fantastic!, Awe Inspiring!, Jaw Dropping!, Beautiful!, Brilliant!, Masterpiece! Long Live everyone who worked to make that movie. From the poor guy in the last row of the Quin army holding a bow by his feet to the incomparable Jet Li. We could detect an homage to Kurisawa in the opening scene, even John Ford in the way rugged landscapes were used to tell the story as much as the actors themselves. You owe it to yourself to try and see this movie on the biggest movie screen you can find.
A Jed Leland review you can trust.

Glad you enjoyed it Jed !

I seen it opening night and it was jam packed theater. Throughout the movie, all I ever heard were gasps of astonishments from the crowd !!

I can see this being the top reference dvd for testing hometheaters for a long time ! :D (Btw, coming to a home near you nov/30)

Saw it late last night (10pm showing on a tuesday night) and there was only 2 other couples in the whole theater. Got PRIME seats. haha Great flick and have to say Crouching Tiger has met it's match. Every bit as beautiful, laid out perfectly, colorful, and still had the great fights scenes. I think I'll have to give it to Hero a lil over CT,HD just because it seemed to be recorded better. Can't wait for the DVD to be released (not the ones on eBay either)

Reference dvd all the way.....:D

Notice the English dub? I may still pick it up since I'm such a big fan.

Only problem I have is the N. American version of the subtitles. They seemed to have "dumbed" it down for the audience !

Hopefully the 6.1 soundtrack will be as good as the "Edko" version !

I think I'll keep my edko version for now
begbie: did u watch Breaking News?

begbie
09-17-2004, 01:03 AM
Yes the dvd reviews on the HERO "Edko" version have been top notch - especially the dts 6.1 soundtrack. :)

One reviewer said it's one of the best demo dvds.

Haven't checked out "Breaking News" yet. How is it?

I plan to sell it off in the flea market tho :)

Kelly Chen rox. I love her music.
She did OK in the IA series, much better in Breaking News. Who's next to bring up namewise? :)

Miramax's latest slash and hack job to HERO.--->The dvd cover art

Jet's sword is replaced with some "samurai" version for broader appeal.

The other equally important characters appear no where on the cover.

Most notably is Tarantino's huge name along the top but the true director (Zhang Yimou) goes unmentioned ?!!!

That's equivalent to saying "Jackie Chan presents......Star Wars" !! while Lucas's name get's no credit !

Oh well....only in time will enough people look back and go "what were they thinking"?

Think De Niro may join Tony Leung in the next Wong Kar-wei film? (De Niro having dinner with Leung in Milan, Italy this past week)

God I hope not. I love Deniro, don't get me wrong (amazing actor) but in this style of movie? I'll take "Please, Oh Please God No" for 100.

begbie
10-20-2004, 10:31 AM
LOL ! Yeah can you see Deniro flying around in a wuxia film in ancient China ?

Though seriously, I think Danny was referring to Tony Leung's other works such as the well reviewed cops and druglord's flick - "Infernal Affairs".

Robert Deniro admired Tony's performance in this excellant film. I'm sure a script could be on the horizon for the two.

Meanwhile Tony Leung's other performance in HERO would easily grab an Oscar nom. if it had been given a chance.

There are 3 "must see" movies on DVD this year if you haven't seen them. They are all available in DVD, to get all the extra stuff and DTS sound, you must order the original official copies...and they are:

Hero as discussed here...

Warrior of Heaven and Earth: this one is one of the best...from the Republic of China, the beautitul Vicki Zhao is in this one also.

Musa: The Warrior...Chinese-Korean movie...excellent...

There is a discussion of American remake of the well-known "Internal Affairs" HK's movie, suggestion was made for the roles of Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung by Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Val Kimer...

Cheers:)

Which one? The "Hero" DVD with both DD and DTS track, I had it almost 2 years ago.:)

On the plus side for the U.S. version is hopefully an improved picture quality and 6.1 dts discrete (?) soundtrack.

The negative side is Miramax's hack job on the subtitles. Some of the storyline is "lost in translation" and dumbed down for the American audience.

Anyways- they should reissue the Japanese Limited edition !

For now my collector's editon will do but the U.S. version should be top notch in picture and sound quality.

Definite reference material for testing out audio/video gear ! :D
