opinions/thoughts on my system wanted

Hi, I would like some opinions or insights into how my system would function in general. Taking into consideration the sensitivity and so forth. Doubtless this quesiton has been posed a kazillion times so I won't waste time prattling....

receiver : harman kardon avr330
fronts : rti10
front center : csi40
rear surrounds : r50

and possibly later I will add a pair of FXI3's for mid-surrounds to flesh out the environmernt.

for your centre I would opt for a csi5 or csi3

A seperate power amp would be fine. However I do not have the space for one right now nor could I afford parasound's 2,000 dollar 200wpc unit if I did have the space.

Who said you have to spend that much for good sound? There's wicked deals all over the 'Net for used equipment that would be amazing. I've seen some as cheap as $150 (if you know the right people/place to look).

If my two rti10's were properly amped, how much area would the sound field cover? I am imagining that my center/surroiunds could be tossed out entirely.

nope they would not be tossed otu completely...your rti10s will have a hell of a lot better bass though

Not quite. The 10's properly amped will sound more dynamic. The bass, especially, will be more impactful, but you may want to hold onto your center and surrounds.

Ditto... calibration is still a must for HT and this will keep your 10's in line...

Can the HK support pre-out and still feed its amp section? I'm thinking HK AVR's do, and if yes, then a modest outboard amp sets up a very economical bi-amp possibility.

Read this thread I started over at AVS. It just hit 1077 replies. It deals with pro amps, mainly the Crown XLS series. You can get 260w RMS @ 4 ohms x 2 channels for about $250. I bet those 10s drop down near 4ohms so then you're talking more like 400w RMS. 400w will make those SING! :D

Yes, my particular AVR can.
Also, there is a feature with direct 6 channel and direct 8 channel with ports on the rear side of the receiver. What's this for btw?

If the "this" you ask about is the bi-amping, you can add a 2 ch amp to fit your taste and budget and run your rti10's bass of it and tweets off of the AVR's internal amp (bi-amping).

If you're asking about the added ports, I'm not sure as I don't know HK all that well, but I'd think they are for externally amping all channels.

If still interested in an amp for the mains, this Rotel amp (http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstran&1100145463) would be an excellent addition. I have used this model since 93. It currently drives my LSi9's and have no plans on replacing it any time soon. Highly rated at the time and better then the current 1070 model.
