I currently aquired a pair of Rt55I's that i want to use to replace my rti28's.I currently have the 28's mounted on the wall behind my couch and high enough to walk under (walkway in-between couch and wall). This will not work with 55's because I could't mount them high enough to walk under without cutting a hole in my ceiling,(WAF)But if I build a shelf and lay them sideways they will be high enough to walk under and no holes in the ceiling.Would playing the speaker on its side be a problem?Do they need to be placed away from the wall?In the near future I'm going to sell this home and buy another, then the 55's will be on stands, but until then it's driving me nuts not being able to add them to my system, not so much for surrounds ,but multi-channel music.Any suggestions?

I would say give it a try (temporary hookup) and see what it sounds like. I am using an R50 laying on it's side (pedastal removed) for a center channel to match my L/R R50 mains.

I guess I can try a tempory set up but that would commit me to install shelves. The good part about that is I'm off work this week and home alone, while the wife is working... it could be one of those projects that is better to ask foregiveness than permission.

Well, I pulled it off...now the 55's are on shelves and in action, sideways.Went down to the local hardware store ,picked up some shelving brackets, shelving, and some 2" lag screws. The wife came home from work and just started laughing, she was wondering what took so long, she knew I was gonna put them there...womans intuition, scary stuff.
Anyway these speakers are awsome combined with the rest of my system,i only listened to a few sacd and it floored me how big of a diffrence the 55's made in the rear compared to the 28's. Tommorow I will re-calibrate everything and demo a few movies.

I have never heard the 55s, but people here really like then. Enjoy your new speakers.
