I won't touch that first line, but my thought was a bit different than just a list. I'd like to see the original list (printed in the back of the SDA series owner's manual) posted here, updated and expanded by suggestions from forum members. There would be a link from the list to a review by the submitter (in "Music and Movies") containing their observations regarding WHY (engineering, depth, soundstage, etc) the selection showcases the SDA effect, experience, orgasmic delight - pick your adjective. Blocking the list into genres might also be desirable for those with rather staid musical tastes/interests (guilty).
IMO the linked list should live here (as a "sticky") in "Vintage Speakers" since it references the same versus music in general. Such a linked list would, at least to me, be a valuable resource in expanding my music library with an aim towards the most compatible selections for a 2 CH SDA rig.

Ohhhh... that's different... Nevermind...
Good idea.. Only two I know for sure that Polk rec'd were:
- DSOTM for showing off SDA
- Flim and the BB's "Tricycle" (title track) that doro listed...
The latter was not to show off the SDA effect, but rather the speed and power of the SRS line as the cut has a huge dynamic range and very, very sharp attacks...
Maybe doro's was the true, official, Polk approved list...
Does this mean I have to drop my project? ;)

I've edited the first message in this thread to start the listing. It still needs work, but I've got time.
Do you agree that we should list the album name (since that's how most people acquire music)? The individual cuts could be written-up in the linked review.

These three stand out after an afternoon and evening getting aquainted with the "new" speakers.
The Carlton disc is past jaw dropping IMO.

(The 24-bit remaster)
King Krimson-Larks Tongues in Aspic (1973) is outstanding on a pair of SDA's. King Krimson sounds a little like Pink Floyd in some ways. King Krimson has had a lot of band changes over the years
some good and bad. Larks Tongues in Aspic stands out as some of their best work. Their album "RED" is also very good and is in the same class as Larks. Although I have not heard "RED" on the SDA's yet, but I know it will sound just as good.

Found an album that I had and haven't listened to in a very long time. Pulled it out and dropped it into the player BAM! I was in the studio! I could hear everything from fingers sliding down frets and strings to the breaths being taken by the trumpet and other brass players in addition to a vast sound stage with incredible speration of instruments. An excellent recording worth picking up!
That recording is:

Pink Floyd: The Wall
Aerosmith: Aerosmith Classics Live! Volumes 1&2
There's an incedible live Aerosmith that I have on my I-pod. When I played the actual CD's in my room HT was great. Concert was 1987 and released on CD in 1993. Good job with the master over all, and no artifical "fixes" either. Only problem was my overall satisfaction with the particular renditions (as is my general opinion of the band) was inconsistant. "Walk this Way" starts out with Steve Tyler sining happy birthday to some random guy in teh audience:confused:. "Dream On" is incredible, certainly better than the remaster they did for "Miracle" (IMHO neither is as aucusticly good as the ORIGINAL master/1st CD master that I hear on a locl classic rock station, but I can't find it in stores/online). "Lord of the Thighs" on the other hand IS better than any of its other incarnations. ;) :D

because there is just SO MUCH music that is just SO EXCEPTIONAL when listened to through the SDAs it's overwhelming!
I see a lot of the more known selections listed along with new one for me, so I'll throw out a couple not so well known...
Anything Deep Forest but two of my favorites are:

That should be "Chronicles". Tell me what you think after hearing it on the SDA's. I'm telling you man, there were details I had NEVER heard before. I've listened to this disc on many a rig, including several "High- End". I use it for auditioning, because of it's diversity. There are several tracks that the recording isn't up to today's standards and then there are tracks that were mastered superbly. It's a great disc for audtioning speakers as well as sources,amps,etc....

Put in B. B. King's Live at the Regal last night for the very first time with my SDA 1Cs. BY FAR the widest soundstage of any disc I've played. The horns were 15' left of the speaker and the guitar 15' right. Had to turn my head 45° just to get a feel for where it seemed the music was coming from. Unlike anything else I've experienced with the SDAs. Made a GREAT recording even better!

Great SDA effect - Turn it up loud!
I’ve been listening to all my old CD’s and hadn’t heard this one in years. Wow! I had forgotten how good it sounds. I don’t know how to classify them: Jazz, Bluegrass, Rock, Acoustic??? Bela Fleck fans take note! This is a remastered CD with good sound quality and the soundstage and imaging are excellent. Anyone heard any of the other Dixie Dregs CD’s?
When My SDA-CRS's were new back in 1986, I would put on Talking Heads - Burning Down the House (Vinyl LP) to let people hear what the SDA's were about. This is when CD's were fairly new and I also used this as an example of why I still preferred LP's at the time.

In college we always referered to them as Jazz Fusion/Progressive. That album was played a lot in our dorm in 1982-83. It's a fantastic album.
Well I have officially heard what, imo, is the perfect SDA song. I was amazed at the recording quality(actually a remaster).
The song is "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" from "THE BEST OF SIMON AND GARFUNKEL"(1999). I've heard this song, literally, thousands of times and it was like rediscovering a lost treasure. Actually, almost every song on the cd is very, very well done. A must have.
If you have your SDAs set up properly you will be in for a treat. I was/am amazed. On top of it all is, it's also a beautiful song.
Paul Simon is a genius.

so true.. i listen to S&G quite a bit.. while not all of their songs sound that good on the SDA's. quite a few of them do. check out the rest of theirs.
Not to mention that they were or are incredible song writers. Certainly as good as Lennon and McCartney.

OK - I admit it - Church Music -
Something like a funeral dirge written for a Pope in the 1600's(or earlier?) Transcripted by Mozart from memory after hearing it because the Catholic Church guarded the music.
It's in latin but unbelieveably cool MUSIC if you can just appreciate it for that - and it makes my SDA's SING The recording is great and haunting and detailed.
Check it out - worth a listen.
On a side note as I make my way through these lists:
Shawn Mullins - Souls Core - Excellent
Rush - Moving Pictures - Excellent
Yes - Close to the Edge - Excellent
Can't wait to give a listen to more!

Funky town rocks. Period. I could hear a strong, 3 layers of depth with the volume cranked up. Super tight. Mark Knoffler or any Dire Straights sounds sweet on any quality system. Knoffler's "Shangri-La" is an HDCD and is smooth and open. Butter. McCartneys "Paul is Live" sounds great. The ultimate so far, however, is Loreena McKennit's double live disk (which I can't find for a name at the moment.) This disk is concert hall and miked perfectly. Her harp in addition to a wide variety of instruments is musical a musical high. All the songs are great, but Mummer's Tale and the song that follows stand out. Lasty, A Tribute to George Harrison DVD with Ravi Shankar's daughter and an Indian orchestra is fantastic. Fleetwood Mac's the Dance wouldn't hurt either...Despite the possible ridicule, Lionel Ritchie's upbeat 80's hits sound super tight and very encompassing. Is it just me, or do quality live recordings sound better than just about any thing else on the SDA-SRS's?

Thanks DAGLJAM6! I'll check those out. I haven't heard a lot of other Dixie Dregs albums but if it's anything like the one I have, I'm in for another treat!

Emerson Lake & Palmer: "The Best of"
This is an incredible sounding CD on SDAs. The soundstage is absoutely huge and the 1.2 TLs simply disappear. Listening to this brought me back to the first ELP concert I attended 38 years ago in Philadelphia. The opening band was a little know group called, "Yes." I was about 13 years old then and needless to say that concert left a lasting impression on me.
Even if you don't like ELP or never even heard of them, this CD is worth every nickel and will blow you away.

Also, Beatles Yellow Submarine soundtrack re-release from late 90s (This is the only remixed Beatles music available besides LOVE.) I just listened to the Beatles LOVE cd on my SDA 2As for the first time. This is by far the best audio soundstage I've sampled yet. Sounds as big as an imax screen. And if you are a Beatles fan like me, it is a thrill to hear the Beatles with such clarity and sound stage quality. Some object to the "mashup" nature of the CD, but trust me it is well worth the listen. None of the Beatles cds sound like this on the SDAs.
Question: can anyone out there tell me the differences between the SDA 2 and the SDA 2A? I have seen pics of SDA2 and SDA2A with different driver configurations, some with 2 drivers and one tweeter, some 3 drivers and one tweeter. Is there some literature about the product line?

I will get the info when I am back home, and post it.
This was actually a very good CD in it's day, like it was mastered for evaluating soundstage, you can pinpoint the soloists' positions and yet it captures the size and ambience of the cathedral without smearing the vocals all over the place.
It is mostly lacking in bass because of the venue and lots of harpsichord and violins. Back then i was a rabid vinyl lover and the store didn't have a working demo turntable, having had some kid snap the arm off an expensive Harmon Kardon. So, I'd bought the CD based on a magazine review and returned to the store with it, and the huge soundstage with proper placement of vocals bowled me over.
These days kids buy 5.1 for that....

First, bar code top right corner back of box that holds the 1:36.52 hour:min 2 CD set: (little 0) 28943 04882 (little 8)
Second, a set of numbers above the bar code, and on the edge of jewel box disc 2: 430 488-2 [OH2]
Publisher is either "Editions DE L'Oiseau - Lyre" or "The Decca Record Company Limited, London 1980, 1991" - the former is noted in the lt upper, lt lower and rt lower corner on the back & on the edge of the jewel box disc 2, the later is noted in the lt lower and rt lower corner.

I was going through some older CD’s last night looking for a few new nuggets from the past to show off the Polk’s (SDA2) to some friends that are into the more laid back side of rock (70’s & 80’s born again hippies if you will). If you’re into that, you may want to try some of these. They are all incredible and generally appeal to a fairly wide audience.
Poco – Magnolia (from the Crazy Eyes album)
Robin Trower – Bridge of Sighs (a good one for SL2000 versus SL1000’s)
Van Morrison – Into the Mystic
Jackson Browne – Bright Baby Blues
Cowboy Junkies (Angel Mine or anything from the Trinity Sessions)
Brian Ferry & Roxy Music – Avalon, Slave to Love
For 12 string electric fans (ie: the Byrds) – Roger McGuinn (Back From Rio album), Tom Petty’s Face In The Crowd, and anything from the Gin Blossoms.

have a nice list for you. My tastes are weird but I assure you you'll flip out if you try them. My friend patented a device that does what SDA does but at line level in 1981. Their company was Maryland based like Polk. Perhaps it inspired Matt to do SDA....anyway, here's a list of a few............
Mino Cinelu - S/T on Blue Thumb: Image A- Fidelity A+
Zap Mama -A Ma Zone on Luaka Bop: Image A Fidelity A- to C+
Massive Attack- No Prisoners (Mad Professor): Image A+ Fidelity B- to C-
African Head Charge v Professor Stretch - Drums of Defiance: I=A F=B to D*

Try it out. Does anyone have the SACD of Blow by BLow and if so, how does it compare to the regular cd?
MIke
I have the original CD, the remastered and the SACD. Get the SACD it's worth it for the fidelity/dynamic improvement IMO. She's a Woman is great for image and the leslie on the keyboards on Freeway Jam is too cool. It's better and wider than the Leslie on Cause we ended as Lovers.

ELP - "Welcome Back my Friends" live concert. This show was recorded in stereo, but it was a quad event. Last night I listened at robust levels and it never sounded so good. Better without the sub. Some of the quad effects were massaging my spine. The effects were jumping around the room...a reference SDA implementation.

Paul Mauriat - Gold Collection - Sabre Dance, about 0:58 seconds into it the base drums start to really kick in and if you have the quick bass response and the 15" woofers, you will really enjoy yourself. Just make sure the wife is not home and crank it up a little.

Roger Waters - Radio KAOS
Yeah I know, going back a ways. I haven't listened to this album (Ok, CD) in like 20 years and it was well worth going back to and taking another listen. I swear to god, after a couple of beers and my newly purchased SDA speakers I was just about to shoot the neighbor's stupid dog for barking and ruining the intro to side two. Then I remembered that the stupid dog was on the album and not downstairs out the window. I giggled, sat back down, and relished...

Well, Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" sounds pretty good to me but it's an older pressing, 1988, so there might be a better version out by now.

John Legend Evolver Another cd with great bass and so far I think one of his best CD's
Out of print but if you can find it, Lorna Hunt All in one day. If you like the Cowboy junkies version of sweet Jane then you will love the version of Piece of my heart ( Joplin) and Whipping post! Fantastic recording.

Rufus Wainwright Poses or Want one. On Poses, on some of the songs you can actually hear when his foot hits the peddle on the piano.

Ok, I'm finally able to post in this thread. Happy about that, no doubt. Anyhoo, I'll be reading this entire thread in the next couple of weeks and most likely blowing a LOT of dough on some new music that brings out the best that SDA's have to offer.
I just heard the Eagle's Long Road out of Eden album, song #1 "No more walks in the woods" and I gotta say that this sounds pretty damned phenomenal with the SDA's. I'm nowhere even close to dialing in the new rig nor have I gotten all of the components in, let alone the entire rig hooked up yet but man, if this is any indication of what is to come, I'm looking very forward to hearing the end result of my latest project.
One of the singers was actually located outside [through a wall] the sound stage was so wide. Another singer was singing in my fireplace and you absolutely could not tell where the speakers were located. Very 3-D sound that wrapped all around you and envelops the room without throwing sounds where they shouldn't be. This is some cool ****.

Supertramp, Breakfast in America, very tall, depth starts at your ears and goes back 50' and the soundstage runs from my patio to my garage (family room in the middle). Of course I was playing somewhat loud...
One of the great things about SDAs is that studio albums sound live. I also played the ELP Welcome Back my Friends concert disk later. The only difference in "I'm there" quality I noticed was the crowd noise. I notice this everytime I fire them up. You get the bass, you get the kick, punch and separation of a band playing live...wonderful experience. A friend of mine came over a couple of weeks ago. He's the lead singer, guitarist, sax and haromica player for a band that's been playing clubs for the last 20 years. They are pretty darn good covering 60s & 70s tunes from the Righteous Bros to Eddie Money with Stones, Doobie Bros, Tom Petty and Chris Issack in the middle. We listened to a couple of demo CDs they made over the last dozen years. It sounded amazing. I've seen them a dozen times, but the look on his face after listening to his own stuff on my rig was very rewarding.

MikeThe whole piece is excellent, but in my room, the last cut, Child of Vision is extremely tall and wide. The grand piano reflects off the ceiling and sounds several feet above the fray. Everyone's rooms and setups make for varying degrees of SDA effect. It works in mine, but I doubt that if you like Crime of the Century you won't have success with BinA...though I'm still looking for a CotC disk.

MikeI picked up CotC yesterday and I see what you mean. This is a great CD for SDA, very 3D, instruments imaged all over the room, even directly behind me. I thought the vocals were sometimes a tad shrill and others buried in the midrange, but it's a great disk...probably their highwater mark musically.

I'd only ever watched the Pulse DVD before, on my HT system, and never with SDA's.
I recently picked up a CD copy of Pulse and jammed it out on the 2 channel rig with my 2A's. The SDA effect is outstanding. Put in B. Got a pleasant surprise on this one tonight.
Aerosmith - O' YEAH! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits
It's a 2 disc set. Very well produced. Really shines on the SDA's.
Do you all Remember sony's super bit mapping Disc's? Before SACD AND HDCD. that came out in the 80ties? I have Aerosmith on SBM.A soulman like me.

@Stone of tone this doesn't have anything to do with your post.but I notice in your Rig list you also have Audio Alchemy DTI-Pro and DDE 3.0 w/remote wand.I haven't found a CDP that sounds as good those. One day I hope I will find the DIT-Pro 2. if I don't sell all of my rig..

The best one I have found so far is Madonna "Vogue" It separates so severely it is unnerving. Her voice in the intro is 10 feet to the right of the right speaker. the rest of the song is a splendid crossing of sounds far lft to far right and front to back. I've had folks point to sounds with eyes closed and it never fails to amaze them when their eyes open and they are pointing to the wall 10 feet away from a speaker. Have to hear it to believe the distance that can be achieved from a properly set up pair of sda's. My Kappa 9's do the same but not quite the distance and separation. (close though) Try it, you will hear the same!

I started a google docs project to get all this onto one page, because, frankly, it's a PITA going through the entire thread to find all the recommendations. It's open to editing by anyone with the link. And the link is... https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Apz4Elg1rTmcdGpxZGZIN1VFZk1URFZCRkdxYXVNa nc
