View Full Version : Do higher end preamps have a sub out?

Ok I'm pretty sure this is a dumb question,
but I'm wondering if 2 channel pre-amps,
a Bryston BP 25 to be exact,
have a sub out jack?

thanks.

Most of them just have a preout which sends a full range signal to the sub. Most 2 channel pre's do not do bass mgt.

tryrrthg-

I see that this unit has 1 RCA out I guess I could send that to the sub.
So you're saying you have to do all of your bass adjustment at the sub itself?
Is it hard to dial such a system in?

You can send that to the sub but you also need to use those preouts to send a signal to your amplifier. so you either need to split the preouts with a Y-splitter or some subs have crossovers on their plate amps. I don't like using those because they're probably not very high quality crossovers.

Depending on where your main speakers start rolling off it's not terribly difficult to run your main speakers full range and have the sub come up underneath the mains. It takes some tweeking with your ears, test tones, and an SPL meter.

like tryrrthg said, most pre amps don't have bass management, so the only thing that is offered is either 1 or 2 stereo full range outputs.

The only models I know of (and I am sure there might be more) is B&K, they have two preamps that do what you are looking for, the PT3 and PT5 both have a subwoofer outputs and have bass management.

...to go to the amp. Is there a way to come off the amp to the sub. I have an SVS PC+ and I'm looking at the Bryston 4B SST amp. with a Bryston BP 25 preamp.

thanks,

Get some good Y splitters, or get a tech to add a second set of preouts.

Seems the Y is the way to go, but you would think that if you spend some good coin for some good stuff they would take care of this kind of thing. I mean how much would it cost them to add another preout at the factory level?

thanks Russman!

It's a good question Luc, especially at 'premium' price points.

I only have preamps with 2 sets of outputs - and if it doesn't, I add it. Not only allows for flexibility running 1 or a pair of subwoofers, but makes bi-amping a breeze also.

Cheers,
Russ
