Yamaha/cable box question

Hello Again Everybody
I have a yamaha rx-v750 receiver and just got a new digital cable box. It has a coax digital audio port which I hooked up to the coaxial input on the receiver. The receiver has input indicators on the on screen display that are supposed to show the channels of input I currenltly have coming in to the unit. The problem is in watching movies that are presented in 5.1 with the cable box settings set to output in 5.1 the indicators only show a left and a right channel like it did with the analog cable. The input mode of the receiver is set to auto and it is seeing the digital signal. Unfortunately I do not have rears set up yet so it is hard to tell if I am getting true 5.1 sound. I will be getting rears within the month but just want to see that the unit is working or set up correctly before that happens. Any help would be great.

A couple more questions about your setup:

What channels are you watching when you should get 5.1?

Is this a high definition box, or strictly digital?

They currently gave me all the channels for the first day until the box resets so all of the HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Showtime stuff.
The box is strictly digital not the hidef one but it has the digital coax output connection.

From the information you have given, it seems like you have set it up to where should be getting 5.1 surround.

I ran into the same problem with my inlaw's cable box, but I can't remember what I did to remedy the situation(it has been over a year ago). We were using a Yamaha receiver in the setup as well.

Does the receiver have an icon that says it is in Dolby Digital? Some programs will be in Dolby Digital-two channel. Digital signal, but a stereo output.

Maybe someone else will have a solution that has dealt with this recently.

Yeah it says dolby digital in the settings menu.

Let me clarify my question a little more.

Is there a little DD icon that lights up on your receiver's faceplate when it is on a premium channel with a movie?

If not, then it may be that your cable company does not pass the Dolby Digital audio signal with the video. This is not a likely solution, but it is not past most cable companies to do this.
