Half-Life 2 is gonna be out in a matter of hours, 11 right now, and I'm excited, are you excited?! I've been waiting a year for this game, it looks awesome, do I seem excited? :)

fyi, I'm not skipping school tommorrow to play, I'm just getting up really really early to play.

With the release of GTA and Halo2, I had totally missed HL2. Kind of sad since this game had so much hype about a year ago.

Call me a pesimist, but I am guessing this game is going to be a real stinker, all things relative.

I bet it would've been awesome two years ago though.

Even with the really high expectations, Half-life 2 is meeting them,
This game is nothing short of amazing, It's fast paced, tatical, and fun. That's the first 2 hours or so. It's really awesome...

I too am enjoying the game . Iam currently in the water canal on the air-bike where its kinda easy to get lost while trying to overcome the bad guys at the same time . That damn chopper is really a pain in the A$$ . lol
All-in-all the game is blast so far and runs smooth on a 9800 Pro @ 1280X1024 on an overclocked 2.6C ( running @ 3450) .
I think there could have been some more "texturing" in the game , but it still looks beautiful .
I really wish too , there would have been a complete separate multiplayer game more to the likes of what came with the original HL1 , more so then just adding in CS (just not a big CS fan ) .

But for now , Iam more happy with HF2 . :D

It's an amazing game. I absolutely love it. The water has to be one of the best parts.

Isn't it? I love throwing stuff in it to watch it splash. My favorite part is the Manipulator Gun, I pick up the explosive barrels and toss em' at the enemy, well, I try anyways, I always misjudge and blow myslef up when I'm next to a pilar. It seems, valve was smart enough (Keep in mind, Valve was smart enough to do alot of things) to align the guns as if it were actually being held by the right hand
Nifty, eh?

Awesome, awesome game. Definitely one of the best games ever. The gravity gun was easily my favorite weapon. I love slinging saw blades at baddies, cutting them in half instantly.

Have you tried the Death match yet? I haven't yet, but will after I beat the game, I've heard the gravity gun makes that game absolutely awesome

CS-S community is great, there are over 3000 servers running at any given moment. Team-based killing against other players is addictive like crack. Wonder if my wife is starting to miss me? ;)

Cant even get the freakin sound to work for HL-2. Cuts off seconds after play.

Sucks. The price I pay for having a pro sound card. :(

Does it support for the Miles Decoding system? (I think it was decoding...)
I beleive they use that that to process the sound.

Heh heh .... yeah the "bug bait" part of the game is pretty cool . Its nice to have those damn things on your side for a change , as they (the bugs) do VERY well against those many soldiers trying to GET YA !!! :D Just a little , toss-here and a toss-there and .... POOF .... the bad guys are history . tee-hee .

Good, Ive been looking for a good game to play. Ive played Doom 3 enough to be tired of it and even my mainstay, Max Payne, is getting a little old.

I know this thread is really old but I just got Half Life 2 two nights ago and it is EASILY the greatest game ever, in my opinion.

First of all the graphics are nothing less than stunning. I have an Athlon 2800+ with a GeForce 6600GT running at 1280x960 with 2x AA enabled on a Sony 21" flat CRT. At times the screen actually looks real.

The physics of the game make it what it is. I found myself for 30+ minutes messing around with the gravity gun, especially on the level where you're near the ocean driving the car around. That level is absolutely SICK! I had my Sennheiser HD580s on and I literally felt like I was in the game. At times I felt like I was in a nightmare, literally. Going from house to house on that level driving the car, inspecting what's inside the houses, and the background music for that level...perfect.

I played two nights ago from 1am - 7am, and last night from 1am - 6:30am. 11.5 hours in two nights isn't too bad, right? :D

I just booted it back up again to play the Lost Coast. You should certainly give it a try when you are done since its a bit better looking with the dynamic lighting, though you will probobly have to turn off AA to make it playable.

What do you mean by this? I have the graphics cranked.

You download the Lost Coast level seperately via steam, and it introduces new lighting technology that was not used in the Half-Life 2 game. The new lighting technology is very impressive but also very hardware intensive. I can run Half Life 2 the game at 1680 x 1050 with no slowdown at all, but the frame rate is noticabely lower with the dynamic lighting enabled. This is on a AMD athlon xp 3000+ with a Geforce 6800GT and 1.5 gigs of ram.

I must say I was a little disapointed with lost coast. I know it was only one section that they took out of the orignial game but i thought it was going to be a lot longer than it was.... like at least take me 30min to beat it. When i played it for the first time last week i died twice (falling off the cliff in the beginign when i was climbing up to the town) and it only took me about 15min to beat it. Very dissaponting. Anyway though the graphics were still incredible even more so than the oringinal hl2 becasue i the dynamic lighting.

I was able to run it with everything all the way up (1920x1200, 16x antistropic filtering, 4xAA and all texture qualities and water reflections set to high with of course dynamic lighting set to on :)) It was just beautiful i was averaging about 63fps the whole time on my my 23" widescreen sony monitor, just simply stunning.

When graphics engines are written as nice as this one is it makes me wonder how anyone could ever play consoles :)

Yeah i know :( the hl2 engine was desinged around to catalyst drivers but o well, there are plenty of engines designed for the forceware drivers as well :D

I am looking forward to ati's cross fire to come out though so i can see if that will be a sinker or a floater......

11-10-2005, 08:59 PM
Brent- crossfire is going to be a sinker. All the benchmarks are abysmal so far. Unless they can really turn things around, it's no faster than a single nVidia based card.

Valve's director of marketing:

"We're working very hard to finish this new episode for HL2, however, it's going to take us a bit more time to get it into top shape. As such, the target release for this one is now Feb/March of next year."

really according to tomshardware.com (I check there every so often) that it's suppose to be on the same level or higher than Sli.

I'm pretty sure it's a reputable site and all is well but hey I don't dabble too much anymore

I am a frequent visitor of toms hardware as well an many other similar sites... you are right about toms site being very inbiased and trustworthy, however i am almost positive it was on his site that i read about the sli vs crossfire benchmarks for hl2, it could have been another site but i am pretty sure it was toms.

ya, i have to agree. I was severely disappointed in this ending. The game was "Ok" but nothing great I didn't think. I personally, thought FarCry blew HL2 outta the water. Much more realistic and better graphics.

Oh well.. to each his own.

I was looking at this and others yesterday and need to know if I'd be better off starting out with the original first????

There's a set with three of the earlier versions for only $10. Since I'm not an experienced gamer, would it be advisable to start out with the earlier versions first, to get a feel for the game, before spending $30 for the newest version???

Thanks

Joey_V
02-15-2006, 02:07 PM
Get the older ones... play it for a little. Even if you dont finish, atleast you'll get a feel for the game and you'll truly truly appreciate the complexity and awe-inspiring gfx of HL2.

Then when the HL2 aftermath comes out... get that too.

MacLeod

HL2 is an awesome game. I really enjoyed playing it. It has weapons that are fun to use (unlike Halo's boring ass green bubble shooters) and plenty of things to kill so from that perspective its a top notch game. The story just doesnt make any sense.
