Revinyl job and other mods...

As many of your know, I let my Mom use my spare speakers, the powerhouse Pioneers ;) in the den - and...

When I got them, they were beat up to hell, so my Dad and I revinyled him.

When I say my Dad and I, I mean my Dad because he 'took over' and did it himself.

Well his method sucked. Period!

So, I am stripped the vinyl off of one just to see how easy it would be...

So, I have some questions. Do I need to cut individual panels of vinyl wrap, apply - then trim, for each piece? And just put a straight edge on the edge of the speaker to guide the razor?

I also plan to put some foam gasket material around the drivers and ports...

I don't know that I'd dump much more time or money into those things.

Looks like they could use some better damping internally off hand. How wide is the vinyl? I'd wrap the front, sides and top - and spray the back / bottom black.

One sheet can wrap both speakers, sides, front, top...

I plan to spray paint the bottom, I spray painted the back last time...

Damping is a good idea...

Do you have some of that Dacron?

I agree with you, They arnt worth much more time or money. I just wanted to get them presentable, and worthy of a spot in the den.

The vinyl isnt much, and I plan to order the foam material for my line array...

I'm not sending you any more Dacron, you know what it is, hit the local fabric shop and pick some up. It costs more to ship the stuff, than for you to just go buy it.

Partsexpress has a pretty good instructions article on how to apply Vinyl/Vaneer on speakers. Just search for spome vaneers and you should get a link to that article.

Today, I tired my hand at making a grill frame.

And yes Russ...

I started your speakers! ;) I got the sides and back on one - should be done in 2-3 days.

They turned out VERY good, I'm surprised.. (the grills)

My mom is using them in the 35x15 den...(I want her to use good looking stuff, not some beat up speakers, ya know?)

and they are my spare speakers that I haul around to parties, a DJ system if you will.

Plays loud, takes abuse...perfect. I let my friends borrow them, etc...

Looks good! Now you need to try some veneer work. Our local Lowes has unfinished stuff in a roll that you iron on. Real wood. I wonder if you can use a router to cut edges after you put veneer on wood? I've heard you can cut it with a sharp knife.

Real wood veneer is nice. You can use a flush trim router bit which works great if it is really sharp. You can also flip the speaker over and cut off the excess with a knife but this is harder to do than using the router.

man, Sid; those are some HUGE speakers!!! What's the size of the woofers in those things?! How low can that thing dig?! Look pretty cool to me.....

The grills did turn out pretty nice......good luck on the re-vinyling....`

They use a 12"..

Might hit 40-45hz strong...

They can play continuous volumes of 105+db, easy...

They are 95db or so nominal..

Just insanely loud speakers...

Here is what they USE to look like...with the bad grill remake and vinyl job...

It is really hard to tell by that picture...

But like there are no distinct edges of the speaker, the vinyl wrap didnt 'cut' sharp enough...

and the vinyl wrap over-laps in several places...I dunno, its just a terrible job

Yeah, they are actually pretty smalll..

12" deep, 15" wide, 36" tall...

Cheap cabinets, 1/2" thick particleboard...

The inside of the cabinet wasnt even sealed. I had to run caulk all throughout the cabinet...

I am going to get some velcro to attach the grills this time. Those grill guides/pegs I got last time was a freakin joke...

But these grill frames I made this time are ALOT better than the ones they had before...
