several different ways to connect your dvd player to your HK.

for audio first.
you can go with a digital cable to your HK. Two types of digital cables are out there. Optical and coax. Both do great jobs.. both sound the same. ;) and cost about the same too. YOU NEED A DIGITAL CABLE TO GET 5.1 DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND.

OR

if you just want two channels of audio from your dvd player.. then you would use a left and right RCA cable. called an interconnect.

Video:

lowest quality is a composite connection. The composite cable looks just like a RCA audio cable. it's the lowest possible quality of video. There are better options.. so unless that's all your HK has.. don't even use this one.

Next up in quality is S-video (SVHS) this is much better than composite. Lots of people use this. the cable is exactly what it is.. one S-video cable with a small multi pin connection on both ends. They start about $10 and go up from there in price.

Finally. You have the best and highest quality of video. component video. This uses three RCA cables. red, blue, green. it seperates the video signal into three cables. Resulting in the cleanest and sharpest best damn looking video quality. :D

if you have any more questions. come back and we'll hook ya up.

good luck
