what does it mean when a speaker is called a studio monitor?

does that mean it's a certain size?

what qualifys a speaker to be given the term "studio monitor"?

It has a reasonably flat freq response top to bottom, and is suited for near-field monitoring.

This is true and it also means that you may not find a studio monitor to be pleasent to listen to when compared to a non monitor type of speaker.

for my TV in the living room. I could not stand listening to the TV speakers(just drove me NUTZ).

They sound pretty darn good to me... they have a built in amps and a 24bit_96kHz dac and also has analog input. I run my DTV optical to them and have a tuner running to them for general listening.
