As the title says, I want to hook up my portable cassette player (and maybe later a tt) to my computer to record to .wav and MP3 files. Is there a (free) program that does this well? Right now, I'm just trying to record a lecture, so audio quality isn't that important; yet.
Thanks!

A couple of observations: To hook up a turntable (at least one with a magnetic cartridge) you'll need a pre-amp. You could use an integrated amp or a receiver with a phono pre, and then just run the tape-out's to the line-in on your soundcard. The quality of your recording will depend on the quality of the soundcard and on the bitrate and bit depth that you choose to record at.
As far as free software goes.... I've used a program called Audacity some. You can download it HERE (http://www.nonags.com/nonags/auedit.html). It's got basic editing functions, and IIRC, it's pretty easy to use.

As long as you've got free hard drive space, I'm pretty sure....
If you click on the "Homepage" on that page I linked to, you can read more about it.

If I'm just recording a lecture from a cassette, what should I have the 'Project Rate' set on? The default appears to be 44100, which is the same as a CD....I assume I don't need it to be that high.....
THanks!
