receiver help

Hi all,

I went to Tweeter the other day and listened to the LSI7's and really liked the sound and would like to buy a pair.

However I read somewhere that you need a powerful receiver/amp to run them. I know my current receiver does not fit the bill but I'm not sure what will.

I just want a two-channel stereo hook up and was thinking about something like the Onkyo tx-8511. However, on Polk's website it says something to the effect of receivers that don't have ratings into 4 ohms probably aren't what you want. The Onkyo and another receiver I looked at only show ratings into 8 and 6 ohms. Does this mean they're not going to be up to the job? I really can't spend a ton of money so I just want to know now if what I need will be too pricey and I should just forget about the Polks.

What is your budget for all of the equipment you need?

The LSi7's do fine with high quality receivers, but the lower quality receivers have problems with the 4 ohm load. You will probalby need to look at another receiver if you plan to listen to them at high levels.

Also, If you consider used equipment, you might be able to get an integrated amp or higher quality receiver and the Polk LSi7's to suit your needs.

I don't really have a budget at this point as I'm just going to try to save to get what I need.

I've been looking online and it seems like I should be able to get the LSI7s on the cheap/used for around $400 bucks.

In looking at receivers I was assuming that the adage is true that you should spend most of your money on speakers. With that in mind I assumed I should be able to get a receiver/amp for well under $200.

Do these rules not necessarily apply as I move into the higher quality market?

No that rule doesn't apply lol. Lsi7's are closer to 6 then 4 ohm I think even tho they are rated at 4 ohm. Check www.harmanaudio.com for refurbished Harmon kardon receivers. They are in your price range and should be fine with your lsi7's.

Since you only want 2 channel, you could check audiogon or ebay for a nice used integrated amp or preamp and 2 channel power amp.

I wouldnt get the oinker receiver.

Again thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll keep my eye out for one of those HK 3480's.
