View Full Version : Polk Fest at Polk World Headquarters?
"Polk" Paul DiComo

While at PolkFest South Carolina, we discussed the possibility of hosting a gathering in Maryland so that you guys could come by the Polk Lair and so that Matt could join the festivities. We are thinking sometime this spring and we are game to host an event, but...
Part of the appeal of this kind of event is the socializing and drinking and lying about on couches listening to tunes. Those of you that have been here know that it is a working environment and not what you'd call comfy and homey. Plus no drinking is allowed on premises (thanks to lawyers and insurance agents who take all the fun out of life if you let them).
So the big question is whether there is a place where we can socialize and drink and lay about listening to tunes. Matt's current house is too small, so is Al's. My wife didn’t even let me finish the sentence when I brought it up. I'll troll for candidates within Polk. I guess I'm trolling for ideas from you folks. Anybody in the MD area looking to play host to a bunch of loonies for an evening or two? Would a hotel type environment suffice? Looking for ideas…

You don't have a Chuck E. Cheeze or Fun Zone down there? Some of the guys might have to drink out of brown paper bags but I don't think it would be prohibitive, or a first for them.
Matt Polk shouldn't have to worry about his current house being too small. These are basically outdoor, yard dogs we're talking about. Out there where the neighbors can get a look at them. Tell Matt it'll be fine.

This is easy, just have Troy and Wendy buy a house near Polk HQ.

Can anyone recommend a real estate agent?
Have any dates been proposed yet? April is pretty much a washout for me between military commitments and a wedding to attend....other than that, I'm in and I'm bringing my 2.3tl's for Matt to sign.
Surely there has to be a hotel that has some sort of conference type facilities...

A MD Polkfest, in conjunction with the Polk Tour will be occuring at my house, period. Any other festivities, are simply not worth attending ;)
Something big is happening in MD, and it may span a couple days, or even a couple homes, stay tuned Polkies.
Actual date is TBD. April is the projection from my side.

I have to keep Matt Polk far away from this thread otherwise the whole thing's off. I've told him what a mature, well behaved group of serious audiophile intellectuals you all are. I am lying on your behalf and then Russ goes and tells the truth and blows our cover story. :D
Serously folks, no dates have been set other than "spring." The whole thing revolves around Matt's schedule and we haven't pinned him down yet.

Bruce, you aren't allowed to come, unless you leave your cd's at home.
I can only listen to D Lite and Micheal Jackson once a year or so, without pulling out the Tommy Gun and mowing everyone down. If you bring the same stuff, I'll be introducing you to my steel-toed baker's dozen.
It's your job to look for NEW demo material between now and the gathering.

What airport would a person fly into for this gathering?
Tour2ma
01-31-2005, 04:47 PM
BWI would be a good choice... Reagan or even Dulles would do as well, I'd think... but the locals would know better than me...
Russ,
The only MJ played at BDT's was very late at night, at very low volume, after Jesse had deaprted and you had passed out on the sofa...
As for Dee-Lite... guilty as charged... but hey, brett liked it...

BWI would be the best, followed by Reagan and I wouldn't even suggest Dulles as a choice personally.
BWI is the closest to Polk HQ and Doro HQ.

YOU haven't met Bruce.
If he shows, wearing his blue shorts pulled up just under his man-breasts, with a tight white T-shirt tucked in, and those old-school white athletic socks with blue stripes pulled up about mid-calf, and finished off with his Top Siders' - and starts listening to that CRAP at 100db......
Well, after 2 days of it, you fell like...well...like your nutsack has been used as speedbag.

A closer house? Sure, but I personally have no sympathy for those that cannot drive a little....and their will be attendees coming from farther away then the Towson area.
A couple of us flew to Dallas, for the Texas Polk Gathering II....and then a couple more of us drove 7 hours for SC Polkfest '04....no lame people allowed at these gatherings.

The area Polk HQ is in ain't so bad. Wanna see a bad neighborhood? Go to the otherside of Baltimore to the Glen Burnie area. That's pretty ghetto there. There are parts in Baltimore itself that are much worse too.

My main concern is not when....because I WILL be there. My concern is that it takes place when Matt can be in town with the opportunity to meet with us crazies. Not that Paul and Al weren't great to talk to....they were!...it's just the fact that if we want to get the SDA back...we need an audience with the main man....Mr. Polk.
Seriously, I don't know how much time he could devote to something like this...but it would be nice to have a meet and greet with Matt and maybe a little group Q&A. I have attended similar fuctions with the likes of Carroll Shelby and Steve Saleen and they were great fun to talk to and to listen to some of their thoughts and stories.

You don't need SDA's back, just go pick up a pair. If you already have a pair (or more), why would you want 'new' ones? We got the low-down re: Polk's take on the subject at the SC gathering from top brass.
I'm sure Matt would look forward to a bunch of whiney forum whores begging for SDA's to be 'brought back'. If you've got SDA, you've got something special, treat it as such. If don't have SDA, pick some up, there are always some for sale.
It's slated for April sometime, last I heard.

Turf Valley Resort - half way between you and Polk HQ, easy access from I-70 and BWI, 54 holes of golf, definitely non-sterile, group rates (double or triple occupancy) probably in the ball park, no "urban" issues.

Same side of I-70, on US 40 before it runs into I-70. Marriotsville road exit from I-70. HoCo fairground is west about 3-4 miles, entrance off MD 144, I-70 access might be MD 32 south exit, can't recall.

I would not plan on this happening folks. I am still going to host a Polkfest this year, but was hoping to make it a largescale function that combined a Polk HQ Tour and Car Audio participation.
I will be pushing my Polk gathering out a month or a couple months, as the advantage for early preparation and travel arrangements for out of state folks is now gone in regards to April.
Sorry, but Polk Audio has some large scale business commitments to handle in April, and our get togethers are on a more personal level.

Sorry for the long silence. Matt is a wonderful boss and great human being ;) but a hard one to pin down when it comes to scheduling his time - particularly weekend time. He's feeling squeezed for time this spring/early summer between family obligations, some essential business travel and recreation. He is looking into the possibility of either the weekend of June 4 or the follwing one of June 11. If those dates prove impossible we'd just as soon put it off until September. How do you (or for us Jersey boys, youse) feel about that?

I shouldn't have to hear that from my wife, who is trying to be a gracious hostess. We, WE, emphasis on WE, THE ENTIRE FAMILY, expect reasonably gracious guests.
The comment you were about to make to my daughter regarding how you like your coffee? She's 15, BARELY. You don't mean anything by it? Then why say it?
All the alcohol being fair game as long as it's not nailed down? On a Sunday afternoon? I have a certain obligation to the rest of the community regarding that type behavior. Pick up the paper and see what I mean. It could be my daughter that gets T-boned by a less than alert driver someday.

Call it what you want, George. Personally, I'm with BlueMDPicker. I don't have a "Man Cave" nor do I call it anything other than my stereo. I don't see the point in bringing attention to the room where I keep my stuff. If the stereo was the only thing in it then that is the Listening Room. Unfortunatly, I am not that well off to have a home that provides me with an excessive number of rooms to be able to devote enought space to such a room.
I merely used a common term at these forums to quickly describe a general idea.
cfrizz, if anything the "Man Cave" term was coined by forum members who were dealing with the lamentations of thier wives who continually chided them about the fact that the men were forced to keep thier stuff in one or two small rooms because of the low WAF. I really don't think George was coming down on anyone about the "Man Cave" thing. He said he didn't care for the term and said he preffered another term. The rest of his post is discussion, nothing more. It seems more along the lines of a statement of his views than a pseudo-spanking.

Actually, on this board, Troy and I termed the phrase Man-cave. As a dedicated listening room, with our finest gear in it. IT spun off around the time of Shane Mann's (Nascarmann) passing. Now you have an abbreviated form, Man-Cave.
Neither of us have WAF issues, or are being forced to keep the gear in 'one small room'.

Jstas, As a woman, I believe I understood perfectly the whole point of all of Mr. Grand's posts and I believe the main point had very little to do with the term "mancave".
However, Mr. Grand is perfectly able to speak for himself & I will be bowing out of this discussion.

September sounds good for me Mark, that would make it about a year in between "fests". Seems like a reasonble time frame for Polk. If you decide on an earlier date in June that would still be fine for me.
I appreciate your willingness to host this "fest". If it needs to be a non-alcohol type thing that would not bother me in the least.

John, George, Paul, Mark (I don't suppose you'd consider changing your name to Ringo), and Russ:
The meandering this thread takes from time to time brings out an important aspect - maybe a couple - at least from my perspective.
We don't have WAF as an issue in our home simply because she is totally in to quality reproduction of music. We call it WIF (wife involvement factor.) Neither of us gets to spend all the time we might desire listening. But, the time we do get to spend listening, discussing, and (most of all) enjoying the music is something we treasure as a couple.
Personally, and it matters not if this is universally embraced, we would have liked to see a large gathering of Polk fans at multiple locations in the area. We've been on enough walking tours of sights and facilities to know we don't enjoy it when the group is too large. You can't see, hear the guide/host, or spend time at particular areas of interest. We have had the pleasure, however, to be involved in a number of events where the product is demoed at a meeting facility (normally in a hotel), small groups at a time are shuttled to the manufacturing facility or corporate site, and social events are held at other sites and times. It works well and allows all to participate at their interest and comfort level.
Polk undoubtedly participates in a variety of industry/consumer events. This seems like a golden opportunity to showcase their current production line to a group that is already loyal and interested - versus a multi exhibitor show where you hope to draw in some interest by dealers and consumers streaming through a convention center.
God bless Troy and Mark for opening their homes and hearts to the crew. But, if this event grew much in magnitude beyond the SC gathering, I really don't think anyone's home is large enough. Nor do I think gear could be demoed and appreciated in a shoulder to shoulder crowd. I could be wrong, but in this case I doubt it.
I don't need my wife's permission to shake hands with anyone. I also don't need to "get away" from her for a weekend (I won't speak for her in that regard.) What I'd like her to have is the opportunity to meet fellow audio fans, their wives/significant others, and Polk Audio staff with me - in a setting that all could enjoy. Again, call me old fashioned. But, if the WIF took more precedence perhaps the WAF level would rise? Truly, form follows function.

Matt Polk took a hard look at his calendar and concluded that spring was not going to work for him - he is overcommitted. Summer is a crummy time because of vacations and the brutal hot & humid weather in Bawlmer. The time frame that works for him is September, maybe early October. Two weekends are defintely not possible due to industry shows:
9/9 - 9/11
9/16 - 9/18
As soon as Matt picks one of the available dates, I will let you know.
This gives us sufficient time to plan the event. I share Mike's concerns about too large a crowd making for a low quality event. We need to figure out how to accomodate a large number of folks in venues that are comfy and yet allow meaningful interaction and enjoyable listening.
All ideas are welcome.
If in the meantime anyone wants to have a smaller and less star-studded gathering, please keep me in the loop so I can lend support.

Man, what a soap opera we have going on here!
First, to the best of my ability, I'll make either date work.
Two, SC Polkfest II is already in 'pre-planning' by none other than the Lovely Wendi. (What did you guys DO to her?)
Three, RuSsMaN speaketh the truth. My 'ManCave' moniker has nothing to do with the male gender. The ManCave is actually short for the 'Shane Mann Memorial Auditorium'.
Four, Nor does the Lovely Wendi have any WAF issues, actually she LIKES how the 2.3tl's look amd LOVES the LSi's. She enjoys audio as well (however, she likes to keep the expenditures in check) and has no issues with having a dedicated stereo room. I found long ago that WAF has less to do with the actual physical presence of anything in a room but a lot MORE to do with the fact that some treat thier chosen hobby with more reverence than they do thier spouse.
In kind, I'm out on this thread. Gimmie a date and the Lovely Wendi and I will try to make it work.

I certainly do not own a mansion, but as stated in earlier conversations, will have 3-4 rooms with individual equipment demo's available in each one. One of the rooms can also be a semi-private area, so the hardcore can rotate in and out with some one on one demo time available for individual sessions.
Will it be perfect? Hell no, but I thought the idea was to keep it grassroots and social.
How much space do you think we need? If I don't seem to have enough space, then plan something else and count me out.
This isn't formal, but will be organized very nicely with alot of little things to mess around with, including some outdoor/ deck BBQ and yard possibilities.
Most of the cristical listening at Troy's was late night, after the large crowd was gone....other than that it was a meet-n-greet. I don't recall the 25+ppl at the SC Polkfest being a problem, as I was all over the place, except when I took a nap on the floor.
The same went for the Texas Gathering, albeit it was less people, but we played far more music later, than we did during the event.
Whatever. When a date is chosen, I'll start worrying about this, until then business as usual.

Jesus H Christ! All this bullshit over the name of a goddamn room! If it was in reference to Nascarmann then I'm wrong. No harm meant but I showed up here maybe 2-3 months before Nascarmann passed away and didn't register until maybe 2 months AFTER the fact. I was using a definition of the term that I was able to surmise from it's general use on the forums by all members. Since no one educated me on the origin, I used inference to determine a definition of the term. People who arrived AFTER Shane passed away were using the term to describe thier own setups. If the real definition of the term has to do with Shane, shouldn't it be called a "Mann Cave" to give respect where due? I didn't know Shane that well nor did I know the true origin of the term. I was mistaken and got blasted for it from both a misconcieved standpoint and the true standpoint. Sue me already if it gets your panties in such a bunch!
I also don't appreciate being reffered to as a "boy being taken to the woodshed" and I'm sure alot of other members don't either. No disrespect to George or anyone else but I may be a small guy but I'll wager that anyone would have a hell of a time trying to do so. If you want to try, let me know and we can make arrangements. Beyond that, sorry for offending anyone about something so trivial!
I tried to be civil about it and address all concerns in due but it seems that didn't work. So now even more feathers are ruffled because I tried to handle disrespect with respect and courtesy and seems like nobody got the hint. So I'm done with it.
If you feel you have anything further to say to me in any respect concerning this situation, take it to PM's or email. I will not entertain any more of this in this forum.

Mark I think what you want to do is just the ticket. Going to HQ would be nice but is certainly not why I would come, as in SC getting to meet old friends and make new ones, meet your family, see and hear awesome gear, listen to some tunes, tell some stories, eat some BBQ, sounds like a great weekend to me. It would be cool if Paul and some others could come by, at SC they gave us their thoughts in a very informal yet meaningfull environment.
Dont get me wrong guys, I am all for seeing HQ and want Polk to support the function, but I just feel the "fests" are more about the club members getting together and hanging out some. Polk does not have to sell me on their speaks, I have them in about everyroom and then some in boxes.
