DVD Burning

I have a dual layer DVD burner now and while I don't buy the dual layer DVD blanks I would still like to burn my movies on my single layer DVD blanks. I know I have to cut out the special features & language tracks etc. so that it fits.

My question to someone here is...How the heck to a I go from ripping my Factory DVD to actually having a Burned DVD of that disc to put in my DVD player?

I have Nero 6 Ultra because I heard it was the best.

Is anyone familiar with ripping & burning with this software? If so would anyone be willing to guide me step by step through the process?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you've got Nero, DVD Shrink (ripper) automatically links to it, so you can rip and burn from the DVD Shrink interface. DVD Shrink is free, the lastest version is 3.2.

3rd vote for dvd shrink... works great.. if you have a large movie like lord of the rings long, you can even burn half on my disk and half on another .. i did one like this already.. its not a big deal to take a snack break and change disks and only on the long movies..

Head over to http://www.doom9.org/ they have all the tools needed to rip 9.0 gb dvd's to single layer dvd's. if you are still confused just browse through there huge forums. If there is any question you have you will most definately find it there.

Programs include dvdshrink, dvd2one, and of course you need dvd decrypter. Plus about another plethora of programs for CD's, VCD, Divx...you name it.

I also use Nero to burn.

DVD Shrink....

Takes a little more knowledge to use, but is an excellent program. What you want to aim for is as little compression as possible. Cut EVERYTHING out of the DVD that you don't need. ESPECIALLY extra features/languages, etc... The more you cut out, the less it has to compress to get it to fit on a single layer DVD, and the better your picture/sound quality is going to be. Integrates excellently with NERO.

NERO is the best burning program out there, IMO.

There's an option in DVDShrink for a special compression technique. I don't know exactly what it does as compared to the regular compression, but the picture quality is much better IMO.

People are reporting that DVD Decrypter burns better copies than Nero. Standalone players are quite picky sometimes about the quality.

I would install both DDV Shrink and DVD Decrypter. DVD Shrink can use Decrypter to burn as well.

I have tried Alcohol 120%, but I didn't really like the interface. For a combination of features, interface, and quality, I prefer Nero over all of them. I figured I would take some flak over the "best ever", but that's my opinion. You can take it or leave it, whichever you prefer :)

No, it would be for the "period". ;)

Nero is great. If you're using Shrink, rip that DVD to ISO image and burn it from Nero. Using Shrink to access Nero to burn is bloated and will slow down your system while burning from Nero interface hardly is noticeable.

DVD Shrink I can highly recomment as an easy ripping software. If you are using nero and you have the VOB files which are the ripped DVD files then you can burn it by opening Nero and selecting burn DVD -> Video DVD -> then put all of the VOB files in the Video_TS directory. Don't worry about the Audio_TS directory it will be empty. This is how you burn home made movie as well.

You're right... I shouldn't have added the "Period" on there. I just changed it to better represent my views :)

And, I would also just rip the DVD to a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder, then burn the VIDEO_TS folder using NERO.

Another vote for DVD Decrypter to rip to your hard drive then use DVD Shrink. I have ripped around 100 movies that way. Picture quality remains excellent at 75% and above for DVD Shrink.

ISO has a few advantages why I use it:

- you can link the image to virtual drive like Alcohol and play it from your computer like from a DVD drive

- you can burn it simply by right-clicking and 'send to' -> 'Nero', Nero will then start the image burning wizard and all you need to do is click Burn

- single file instead of folder

I would suggest using the slowest burn speed possible for best quality.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'll be tinkering around with this a little more tonight and get back with any questions.

I did download DVDShrink last night and 'backed up' my entire DVD to my hard drive. It is now in it's old folder and the files are
'VIDEO_TS' and 'AUDIO_TS' as Tomasz indicated.

Now I do what? This?

I'll try that, but I used DVDShrink to rip the DVD, not Nero...and it took forever to rip...which seemed odd.

Did you use compression. Nero can't rip DVD's so you're fine using Shrink.

It does take quite a while to rip a DVD. You're limited by the speed of the drive. And yes, you want to burn the files using NERO (or any program that can burn DVDs....)

Ok...one note to make...on any DVD with previews and such it ALWAYS screws up the DVD. The previews play and then it like freezes my DVD player. If you press 'Menu' the same thing happens. Anyone else have this problem?

If I burn JUST the movie it's not a problem. That seems to work just fine, but I can't burn JUST the movie & the menus.....
