Just ordered a pair of R15's from Frys for $50 to use in my cubicle. I'm going to try powering them with a t-amp because most of the time I can't play them loud anyway. In the evenings I could crank them up though. Any cheap suggestions for power?

At one point I had a pair of SDA-CRS and a tube amp here. Although nothing has ever walked away it made me nervous so I took them home.

Vintage would be cool but I need something somewhat small. My sources are a PC and XM radio so I need to switch between the two. I can change the 1/8 inch jack if necessary to switch sources. I would like something nice sounding and small.

I'm quick on the trigger today! I ordered a Teac A-L700P T-amp. Zero seemed to like it a lot...

Cherry looks good for those. The black ones at the store look like crap.

Max -- Keep us posted. I'd like to know how the Teac compares to the Sonic Impact. Can you hook up a source directly to the Teac?

The inputs are variable.. so yes he should be able to.

That is definetly a sharp looking speaker in the Cherry finish.

Heads up- those rR15s re back at $50/pair. R50s are $80each. Easy on the eyes and good for those on budgets.

02-02-2005, 09:56 AM
One more question -- will the Teac accept banana plugs?

I asking because I was going to purchase a Sonic Impact and buy the custom aluminum chassis and install 5-way binding posts, etc. I'd rather purchase a T-amp that doesn't require any mods.

Thanks.

I think if you are considering the high eff speakers the SI is probably the way to go. (from what I've read). The SI seems to be making a hit with the high eff crowd wich is not an easy thing to do.

For those interested in the TEAC Tripath power amp, here are some threads over from audiocircle.com

Start with this one first (19 pages)....

http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=11728

Then stock TEAC vs. modded TEAC

http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?p=141414#141414

I have been meaning to get one of these TEAC amps, but my PS Audio speaker cable purchased sidetracked the project. Yes, the TEAC has binding posts in the back. No detachable power cord though.

Man, those R15s looks damn good in cherry.

I didn't realise that they were $50/ PAIR!!!

Just picked up a pair, myself (I hope... they said "call for availability"). I'll probably drive them with my Pioneer SX-450, if it's enough.

Can't wait to get 'em.

Great links DT!

Hbomb, I am very happy to get you in hot water, anytime!

From what I understand the pcb inside the unit is set up to allow for 4 channels. One is left unpopulated. I'm guessing here but I think they probably use two channels from one IC and one channel from another. The dual outputs from the one chip (if that is the case) would not be common ground. BUT, if I'm right about the two chips, the second one could be tied common with one of the first two. All guesses though. I'll investigate it once I receive the amp. Obviously the first thing I will do when I receive it is rip it apart. :D

Here is a link for the R15's in case anyone else wanted to order a pair. For me they were $50 plus $10 shipping.

It's better to wait than to be told they are unavailable. :)

I just hope we get them.

I can't wait until MARCH. By then I'll have forgotten that I paid for them. The black ones are shown as being in stock and available, though. Do they really look that much worse?

Did you see the price for the black ones? $129. That is why the cherry ones are such a deal. They look better and cost a lot less.

No on seeing the black ones but that is a great idea! Actually I may try a very radical color. Maybe red or yellow. Maybe yellow and black. Maybe purple.

Yeah, I did just notice that the price is much higher. I wonder... if, on the off chance that the Cherry becomes no longer available, they would give us black instead.

I'd rather be on the waiting list than not get them at all, I guess.

Okay, so these speakers are rated 20-100 watts each. The receiver I'd like to drive them with is a vintage Pioneer SX-450, which is only rated at 15wpc. However, I've never had problems with it driving speakers larger than these. It can't handle my Monitor 10's, but it runs my 5jr's pretty easily. Any thoughts? Should I dig up one of my other old receivers that might be rated higher?

These are going to be used in an office room with a PC as the source. Plus of having your brother as your boss... he likes loud music, too :D

madmax
02-03-2005, 02:03 PM
Often a small speaker requires more power than a larger one due to efficency.

Looks like I have at least 30 days to wait... I'll probably forget I ordered them.

DT, yes, the black is VERY nice. Did you get the texture that way with special paint or did it just happen? Nice system too, except for that EQ futzing everything up. :) I especially like the two amps sitting together and the granite on the other components. Very serious DIY!

madmax,

The system in the photos isn't mine. The owner of the system sold his $1,200 integrated amp (which cost more than my entire system) and replaced it with 2 TEAC amps. I e-mailed him regarding the black paint though and here's his response....

Well, I used some "bed liner" spray paint that I found in a local store - I thought that since it stays a little flexible, that it might help with damping the chassis from vibration, as well as meet my need for dark components.

It is a textured paint, so if that appeals to you, I am sure that in the US Pep Boys or somebody must carry a product like it - essentially a spray on coating for pick-up truck beds.

IF you want a smooth black coverage from the paint, I would suggest Krylon, it goes on really nice, and looks glossy etc.

BTW, he used the TEACs to drive a pair of 4 ohm Totems and no problems at all.

madmax

I assume he is bi-amping? I'm very anxious to hear one of these. I hope it gets here soon. If it is anything like the Sonic Impact amp it will be awesome with the extra power.
madmax

Danny Tse
02-04-2005, 02:16 PM
Yes, he was using the TEAC amps to bi-amp his Totom tower speakers. He has since switched to DIY single-driver speakers. But the fact remain that the TEAC amps can drive low impedence loads, has a lot more power than the Sonic Impact T-amp, and a proper power supply.

I think the TEAC driving the R15 will sound great.
