Just wondering which DVD player sounds best for cd playback (less than $100). I just ordered some SACD's (finally!) and I'll be taking mine back from my parents. I have a cheap Pioneer DVD-563A which plays cd, dvd, sacd, dvd-a. It sounds pretty damn good on music. So I have to replace the pioneer with another player.

Thanks

Maurice

You know me...I'm a Denon whore...

I say look at the Denon 2900, should be able to find that WAY under a grand, closer to $500 probably...

Organ - your 563 is a hidden treasure! take it to the next level with aplhifi.com mod, you won't regret it...

But for under $100... I guess you'd have to take the 3960 at ~$50

Polkmaniac,
LOL, Man, I was juiced. I actually thought there really was a Denon under $100 until I looked carefully and it said $1000.

Polkatese,
Did you get the mod done on a 563? Thanks for the link but at $700+, it's pretty damn high. I'm thinking about a tubed Jolida at $1000 when I'm ready to upgrade the NAD cd player.

I knew it was a hidden treasure when I first got it. Tried redbook on it and couldn't believe how good it sounded for the price! Clarity and PRaT was outstanding. I also heard that the SACD playback was so good that Pioneer had to dumb down the 563 replacement because the 563's sound quality for SACD was competing against their mid level players. It sends out pure DSD when bass management is turned off.

jdhdiggs,
Thanks. That's what I was thinking. Just wondering if there's any other ones out there incase I can't find the Tosh. It's discontinued, right? If I can find the Tosh, I'm getting it.

Maurice,
that prices includes the player too. Yes, it is steep, but it's worthed. It was a blind purchased for me (based on Alex, the genius behind aplhifi, recommendation) and I am very impressed with it. You nailed it, Pioneer transport is one of the best out there (supposedly bettered Sony's) and pure DSD, no PCM conversion, is THE reason why the player sounds great. Either way, since you already have it, save it. Good luck!
