View Full Version : Using a CD player over a DVD player

Just curious how you guys feel about using a dedicated CD player over using a DVD player?

Is it any better quality? Or does it just reduce wearing out your unit?

Since I'm looking at buying the Pioneer DV-588-AS in a week or two, will I be doing my Polk RTi12s a big injustice by not giving it a dedicated CD player like Marantz or something?

I don't care about the carousel factor really... I'd just like to know if there is a noticeable quality difference, and if it's worth the $500.

Thanks!

It depends on how much you're willing to spend. I think if you can get into the $400-$600 range (and higher), a dedicated player would be worth the effort. You might look for a nice used or phased-out player such as the Cambridge D500SE I've been seeing on Ebay lately, NIB for $279. That's a heck of a deal.

I would think that if you're running Rti12's, it's time to give them a formidable source.

Laura, I just did an A & B comparison between my 15 yr old Rotel cd player & my 3 yr old dvd player.

Musically the Rotel stomped all over the dvd player. So if your really concerned about music, it is worth the expense to get a separate cd player.

Okay, so it's unanimous then! Are there any other brands I should look for besides Cambridge? As you know, i'm notorious for doing excessive research and comparitive shopping :)

Rotel RCD-1072. I'm going to be upgrading to this as soon as I get my tax refund in!

And of course you will want to sell your old rotel. That was for how much again????

Personally, I'd look for an AMC CD8b. A hell of a redbook player, IMO.

Now, if you have to go an all in one unit, I think that the Philips DVD963SA is a formidable unit: DVD, SACD, and redbook upsampling to 192 khz.

Depending on budget, you might want to consider a tube CD player.

Sorry Michael, but my old player will be going down to my brother in MD.

That's what I do. Partly to take some of the work away from my DVD player (used also for SACD's), but I also like the sound of rdebook CD's through my CD player better than through the DVD player.

My 17 year old 16 bit Kenwood (at that time a top of the line model that weighs 23 lbs) also sound better than 3 of my 4 DVD players. The DVD players sound "thin", lack of mid and low bass, compared to the CD player. Yet the DVD players (even the cheapest one) sound great with movies, DD and DTS music DVD, e.g. D.Krall in paris. The sound is not thin at all. They just cannot do the same with CDs.

I thought it was just me hearing things, now I know others feel the same, but why?? My only DVD player that does okay with CD is the Denon 3910, but its not a fair comparison as it costs much more.

cfrizz,
The 1072 is on my list as well. I have been considering it. I use my Dv47a as a cd player and have been happy with the sound quality.

Hey Dan,

The sound quality is there, but as someone else & I have pointed out, it is missing the oommph in the bass & a little thin at the top. I have the same dvd player as you.

I'm simply amazed me that this would happen considering the electronics in my dvd player would be so much newer in my dvd player as opposed to my old Rotel.

You won't really hear it unless you can do the comparison with the same material in each player. Very enlightening!

Cathy
