I bought my 3.1TL speakers used, black in color, and the 1 tweeter in each is black as well. My question is did these come with the sl3000 gold tweeter, and mine have been replaced, or did they make a black sl3000 version?

Might they be SL2500s?

SL 3000's in my 3.1 tl's are black, as are all the 3000's I've seen.

Did not know there were any gold ones... Was there a Willy Wonka type Polk promo?

Like Tour2 says, they came with black SL3000s.

Perhaps you've seen some SL2000 Silver Dome tweeters with the ferro fluid "cooked"? They might be considered gold in color.

Bdaley,

I've seen and owned SL3000's in bright silver, a slight gold tone and a dark silver which can look black. Do to the process, the manufacturer could not control the outcome of the color. Polk would use matching color sets to avoid a rainbow look.

Pull your tweeter and look on the back, it will be stamped with the model number.

Thanks for the heads-up on this point. Although not an "important point" it is still interesting, at least to me. I don't have the experience withe the 3000s you have so it's new information for me.
I've seen and own 2000s that have varing shades of color and brightness but they can still be considered basically silver. It looks like Polk wanted to give the impression that the 3000s were truly new and different from the 2000s. Not only an updated/upgraded tweeter but they went to a new style face plate and liked to photograph only the "blacker" specimens for their literature. At least all the literature I have showing them...

I'm not picking on Polk but one more.

There is no doubt that any photos of the 2000s show silver domes not matter what the angle or distance. They really stand out.

The typical shot we are all familiar with.

These SL3000's were bright silver in natural light, but when photographed looked a tad darker.

Understandable.

Another little thing that you can notice is the 2000s have a thin silver surround and the 3000s have a bit wider black surround which adds to the effects.

I pulled my tweeter and it's a sl2500 model. Did these ship from the factory with the 2500's?

No.

Looks like Loud & Clear's original question hit the nail on the head. No TL (TL=Trilaminate=SL3000) speaker originally had SL2500 tweeters. The previous owner probably just replaced both of his some time after the SL3000s became unavailable from Polk. How do they sound compared to the other SDAs?
