subwoofer hook up... woah

who knew this would be so difficult... i have the PSW 505 and harmon kardon avr 7300 w/ a subwoofer preout...

... i am not going to be hooking my speakers in line w/ the sub as per the "polk way"... so i need help with:

1. the "line in filtered" OR the "LFE unfiltered"... seems like i want to go w/ "LFE unfiltered" as will be using for HT a lot.

2. if i'm understanding it all correctly, if i'm using the LFE choice above, i will need to set my crossovers... any suggestions given my setup? RTi12's, CSi5, FXi5's....

3. when i'm listening to music it seems best to turn the surround off... if i do this with the above setup, should i keep my base management on? the hk avr7300 allows for this.

Don't sweat it we've all been there

1 for HT use the LFE
2 the rule of thumb is 80 for xover but you may want to lower that to 60 due to your 12's and set all speakers to small
3 always keep bass management on you can use your sub for music as well. Yes turn off the surrounds, or if you like surround music , leave it on.

80hz is the THX standard. You might try leaving the fronts set to Large and see how it sounds to you. Subs and 2 channel don't always work well together. Try it both ways and see what works best for you.

Frank you are right abou the sub an 2 channel I forgot he had 12's. I was thinking of my 4's.

as it stands now i have the fronts sent to large, the center and rears set to small.

The easy way to do it is to keep everything the same but don't be afraid to experiment. Determine the frequency response of the speakers you have and start playing, that's half the fun.

.... i've looked at specs for my speakers and have no idea what they mean. what exactly am i looking for when determing crossover.... thx again and again.

You may be able to get away with setting that CSi5 to "large" for movies and for music you may be able to get away with leaving your sub on , but turn it down some. In my set-up the bass is a lot more powerful while listening to music than looking at a movie.
Congrats on the RTi12s, and have fun with your new set-up. How many watts per channnel are you pushing out of that avr7300?

the avr 7300 is pushing out a whopping 125 watts/channel w/ 2 channels... or 110 watts/channel all 7 channels driven.

supposedly it's a honest conservative number from what i've read..... power amp is in my future though.

That will push that CSi5 with ease. After my sub upgrade, that Csi5 will be next for me. That thing is a beast. You can feel the bass coming out of it during movies and listening to music in all channel stereo. Have fun, and don't let that damn upgrade bug bite you!;)
