Can PLIIx "misfire"?

When using PLIIx over DD 5.1 (both DVD's and HD STB), on a couple occasions it has seemed to me that certain sounds have come out of an inappropriate channel.

For instance, something exits the screen top right and an effect is heard from the SBL. Or a piano on a soundtrack seems to pan left-right-left with no apparent visual cue for doing so.

I notice some of these oddities on Elektra in partcular.

Is it possible for the PLIIx decoder to become temporarily confused and route things incorrectly? It seems to me that it can't route things across channels but rather just decode matrix information or localize phantom info to a certain speaker (for non EX).

Or is this simply a case of poor judgement or different artistic interpretation on a sound engineer's part?

The usual suspects are covered - there are no phase errors or speakers connected to wrong channels. Without another PLIIx capable AVR, this could be really hard to troubleshoot :-(

AVR is the Denon 3805...

Any thoughts?

DLPIIx overlay of DD 5.1 should derive the back center channel(s) from the L/R/ surround channels only.

Agreed, thats what I've heard as well which would seem that anything happening in the front (like the odd panning) is certainky not due to PLIIx.

Last night, I listened to the same passages in stereo mode and it seemed like the effect was less but still present.

This is probably just me over-analyzing my system - its probably just mixed this way :rolleyes:

Ok yes I did it!!! Hey is got a good soundtrack and one of the few action movies I've gotten my wife to watch with me (its OK cause its got girls kicking arse)
