If the 'brick on head' theory doesn't work, put the mouse pad in the middle of the room on the floor....slam 3 beers, go hide behind the door.
Cat comes in, starts to chew, hit it with a power-blast stream of re-cycled malt beverage, if you get my drift....
Works every time. Head shots work the best, so try to aim. Of course, by this point, not only are you going to replace the mousepad, but the carpet is usually shot too.

Try wiping ammonia on the mouse pad. Enough so you can't smell it but the cat can, they hate ammonia. If you want to go the training method, every time you move it away from the pad tell it NO. When you have put it on the floor praise it so it can learn what is good and bad. Squirt bottles work well in moderation too. I have two well trained cats one is 25lbs and not fat just BIG. They have learnt to sleep all night and be up during the day. That was a tough one, they also don't get up on counters tables furniture etc. Work with your cat they are smart maybe to smart.
Good luck

Dogs are here for you no matter what you do, right or wrong they don't care.
Cats are here to let you know when you mess up and they let you know it.

When you feed a dog, it thinks:
'Wow, this person gave me food, He must be a god'
