I own a pair of monitor 10's. I just replaced one sl1000 tweeter with a new sl2000 from polk for 48 bucks delivered. Having to use my Dremel to widen the opening sucked, but I was succesful in installing it airtight. However, theses tweeters are not compatible!! The sl2000 is MORE effecient, and as a result the drivers work more, and deliver more bass response. Obviously this new tweeter is also louder than the sl1000. Hmmm...are the older sl2000 tweeters with the metal faceplate different sounding, etc. than the new plastic face sl2000?
Somebody please make some scientific sense of this for me!! Thanks, Michel

Hi Michel,

I posted a similar thread about a week ago. I have one of those 10's that have the Peerless tweeter. The SL2000 is simply not a replacement of the Peerless. The speaker doesn't sound the same (not as good , IMHO). The optiona are:
1. Replace the other with SL2000 (you can sell both SL1000 to me :D ) so that you a pair of speakers that sound the "same".
2. Try to find a used from ebay, make sure you don't outbid me ;) (ebay id fv168) because I suggest you such great idea:) and I also need one.

I do have an extra used SL2000 (purchased from the bay) available if you need one, just send me a PM :)

Hmmm...I'm trying to make sense of your post.

From what I understand you only replaced one tweeter, but you really need to replace both. The new tweeters are not SL2000's, they are RD0194-1's. The original SL2000's never had a metal face plate, only plastic.

Thanks for your response. One of my sl1000 tweeters is completely dead and not salvageable. The other is in excellent working order, and will be available if you want it. At this point I think I will either buy another new sl2000 from Polk, or sell the one I just bought and look to buy a pair of metal face plated sl2000 tweeters on ebay...which I am assuming will sound more like the sl1000's than the new plastic faceplated sl2000's. I'd ship you the sl1000 for cost....make me a reasonable offer, and its yours, without dealing with ebay, where I am listed as uptownrecords2004. Take Care, Michel

Helloo Polk Guru, f1nut....
Thanks for your knowledge. I called it an sl2000 because thats what polk told me it was!!...but you are correct...on my invoice, it listed the part number as you described it. They said it was the "replacement part". Obviously I have to choose between the new and the old. If these monitor 10's were yours, (powered by a hafler xl280, linn pretek preamp and a thorens table), which tweeters would you choose, in order of the ones you'd prefer? I listen to classic rock, reggae, world music, and have many high end lp's. Thank you for taking the time to edify me. Michel

I was in the same situation. Helen Yarbot (Polk customer service) told me that the SL2000 was the replacement of the SL1000, and from the SDA thread, it seems to me that the RD0194-1 is the replacement for the SL2000. Of course, if the old transitive logic holds, then RD0194-1 can be also a replacement of the SL1000. You are absolutely correct, Michel needs to replace the tweeters for both speakers, just one make the 10's sound weird. As a matter of fact, it sounds so weid that I picked a pair of B&W DM10 from local for the interim use.

Yes RD0941 is the tweeter I was calling plastic face plated sl2000. My newbieness is exposed...although I have been listening to these speakers for 20 years plus. I am still in a quandry over whether to have 2 RD0941's versus two older tweeters....black metal plate, clear dome on tweeter (sl-2000 ? ) F1 Nut...you are the man apparently, and anyone else HELP!!!! Thanks,Michel

Just currious...

I want your SL1000's, good or bad.

What use would you have for a bad one?

Michel,

At this point since you have enlarged the one tweeter surround I don't see where you can go back.

Silver metal face plate = SL1000
Black metal face plate = Peerless tweeter
Black plastic face plate with Silver Dome written on it = SL2000
Black plastic face plate with black silk dome = RD0194-1, which is the only replacement available for the Peerless, SL1000 and SL2000.
Black plastic face plate with black silk dome = RD0198-1, which is the only replacement for the SL3000. This one looks just like the RD0194-1 from the front, the way to tell the difference is the connectors are different.

Edit: correction, thanks Tour.

Yep, +1 for upgrading both tweeters to RD0194-1s. Give them a chance to break-in a bit. I believe you'll be quite pleased with your old friends.

I hope that isn't weird. I keep a bad sl-2000 and sl-3000 for some reason. :)

Silver metal face plate = Peerless tweeter
Gasketing the plate wouldn't do the trick?

All my Polk Peerless (with the custom hole in the center of the dome) have black plates.

Not trying to shaft fredv here, but I'd never go away from the Peerless.

Absolutely, I am searching for my Peerless replacement. Compare to the SL2000, the sound quality of the Peerless is like day and night (no, I don't mean to spark another tweeter debate, it is yet my opinion). I come across one discussion about the Polk made SL1000 (silver plate) and the Peerless SL1000 (black with a dimple), someone said the Polk made was actually quite close the quality of Peerless. I am just curious whether this is the case.

Can't comment on the SL1000, have never heard it (usually a statement by me like this is a cue for Russ/ Jesse/ doro to jump in and say, "Sure you did. The Mon X at Polkfest #Y." Thus confirming my own confusion.)

I would like to hear a shootout between the Peerless and the RD0194-1s... (and probably have... :) )

One of the tweeter is broken. I bought it in 1980. Is it a SL1000 please?

Just as an FYI - (not that anyone cares) but I have an SL-2000 in my SDA-1b's that I really do not like (especially compared to my LSi's) and would replace in a heartbeat with the silk dome replacement. (I haven't yet because the speakers are not currently in use)

I have the SL-2500 in a pair of Monitor 10 (series II) speakers and love the sound. It would be a tough choice sound wise between them and my LSi15's. (the 15's look alot nicer though, so they stayed and the 10's joined the SDA's in the basement.

I hope to complete a home theater down there using my SDA's and 10's eventually. When I do, the SDA's will have upgraded tweeters, the 10's will stay with the SL-2500.

Never heard the peerless or Sl-1000's to my knowledge.

Michael
