I've been messing around a lot more than usual lately. I separated my HT from my 2 channel system. I bought the Anthem Pre2L tube preamp quickly followed by an Anthem MCA2 SS power and then last week I pulled the trigger on an Anthem AMP 1 EL34 tube amp.
I resoldered my Bottlehead Foreplay to finally come to the realization that I had a couple of bad tubes and that was the cause of the hum I was getting right from the get go. Organ was kind enough to sell me a pair of Mullard 12au7 along with a few extras which was very cool of him and much appreciated. Today, I plugged the Mullards in the Foreplay and some Electro Harmonix EL34's in the Amp 1.
I still have some work to do, but man, it feels good and like I'm headed in the right direction. :)

Awesome! Glad you're enjoying it. You still have your SED EL34 right? Plug those suckers in your Anthem and give it a try. The Mullard and SED combo is the warmest, smoothest and sweetest sound I've heard. It will sound too warm and sloppy with heavier material though. At least that's what it was like on my system. But put on some nice soft stuff and you'll get very dreamy sound.
It's nice to hear that you're headed in the right direction. Not very many of us will admit that with our systems. I found out I was headed in the right direction about a year ago. In fact, I'm completely satisfied with what I have now. After a pair of Klipsch RF-7(I will own a pair one day), I may never upgrade the speakers again. I just want to play around with my leftover gear right now. Want to try out a pair of Maggies using my NAD ss stuff. Or I may get a Jolida tubed cd player.
What speakers do you have these tube gear connected to?

One of the most blesesed events of an audiophiles life is taking the steps towards enlightenment. After the great journey to discover "your sound" a lucky few are rewarded with the knowledge gained and can truly sit down and lavish in the fruits of their labor.
It is one of the things we take most for-granted.

Dragon, I'm wrestling with the idea of selling stuff. I think the MF A3 might have to go only because the resale value is excellent. I'll definitely miss her. She's a beaut and has served me very well.
Maurice, I hadn't used the SED EL34 in a while and I put them in yesterday and only to blow one right away on power up. It was my first blown tube. It freaked me out. Lol. I'll have to order a replacement. I have the SDA 2A's hooked up for my 2 channel rig. I'm going on a 3 week road trip to BC soon, when I get back from that, I'm going to order some replacement tweets, build some DH labs power cables. Maybe a new source in the fall.
Zero, I'm still on the lookout for some Hawks.

You got that right. I just sold mine on Ebay for $728 plus shipping. I was pretty happy considering I bought it for $620 shipped. You never see them for sale either. I kinda hated to part with mine also. Good luck!

Derick,
Sorry to hear about that. Does your amp perform auto bias? Do you need matched tubes for it? E-mail me, tnmr0009@hotmail.com when you return from your trip and I can send you a pair of mathced SED from last year's production.
Oh yeah, forgot to add this. For that really warm sound I told you about, you'll also need to use the SED X7 I sent you in the amp section. So Mullard U7's, SED X7 and SED EL34. But I prefer the dynamic presentation of the Sovtek X7LPS.
Enjoy the trip.
