I finally got my lazy arse into the gym this week after a long layoff. I did a major overhaul to my diet also.
Gone are the chips, pretzels, sodas, ice cream and other BS! Taking their place are scrambled eggs and juice for B-fast, protein shakes, salads w/tuna or chicken full of veggies for lunch, lean beef or grilled chicken for dinner and TONS of water with vitamin packs every day.
Guys...i'm so f-ing hungry for junk food! My stomach is growling all damn day long!
I trained upper body on monday and got so damn sore I couldn't straighten out my arms all week. I did a light leg workout last night. Next week i'll kick it up a bit more then each workout after that.
Back to lunch!

Don't forget that bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. Take one day out of the week for eating anything you crave, it helps a lot mentally (and physically).

I had planned to add that into the b-fast menu already. I used to eat it alot, but got lazy and threw it aside with everything else.
Oatmeal with 1% milk = YUMMY!
There are other things besides what I mentioned that I will add to the diet.
The first few weeks will be the toughest, but I'll make it. I'll keep some healthier snacks around the house to ease the cravings.

Protein shakes and bars are a good way to keep the hunger at manageable level. I started working out again after 4 months of hiatus. Started working out hard, added more leg workouts to the routine and changed my diet. Went from 17% to 12% BF in 3 months while maintaining my weight (5'10" & 188lb).

John,
congrats on starting your workout and diet.. keep up the good work.. stick with it.. and you'll see results in a few months if not sooner.
Running is great way to shed those pounds... so is cycling.
I'm there with you man... i've been going to the gym the past year.. and doing some of the same things.
Oatmeal is good...
so are nuts... the bland kind of nuts.. peanuts.. not the roasted and salted one.. the plain ones..
my biggest problem is sweets... i eat anything and everything sweet within 100 feet of me. :D

Then try some of the protein bars that are sweetened with splenda. Some of them are even better than candy bars.
Every time you grave sweets, have a protein shake first. Once you have finished that, eat all the sweets you want.

A little tip for hunger.
Head down to GNC or Wal-Mart and check out the protein bar racks. When they get close to going out of date theyll mark them down to like $.75 a bar.
I usually go to GNC and get a box (12 bars) of EAS Carb Sense that are close to going out. I got my last box of 12 for $7. They have 29 grams of protein, 22 carbs and 7 fat. They taste pretty good too. These will last me 2 weeks and Ill take them to work and eat one between breakfast and lunch. Kinda keeps the hunger and the sweet tooth at bay! ;)
This is the good thing about lifting only for strength. It doesnt really matter what you eat as long as you eat a LOT of it!
Plus it helps when your 33 and married and dont care about love handles anymore!! :D
