I haven't purchased new speakers since 1980 (all have been demos or used). Back then just sending white noise (volume 50%, from a turned off source) was enough to break the speaker in. Does that still apply or do I need to actually play music?

I do not know, when I got mine I just cranked them up till I was tired of loud music and then I turned them down till the next good song came on.
Are you supposed to break them in?

it's a natural process that just takes time- much like buying and driving a brand new car. Don't be rough with it the first 5,000 miles- just do normal driving. I wouldn't blast a new speaker at high volumes with any genre of music. To get the new tweeter and to a lesser extent the midrange to calm down a bit and not be so straightforward and bright I would usually play more mellow music- This took about 60-80hrs. of playback on my set.

In the end though I don't think it's so much the type of music you play on the new speaker as much as it's HOW you play the music on your new speaker.
