First time getting my ears on them in my own home. What are they?

I'll say this, the Spendor 1/2's are hands down THE best speaker I've ever heard - and I'm going to box them up for a while and listen to these for a while.

Fun stuff, and suprisingly easy to setup.

Maggie MMGs on custom Mye Sound stands. I was suprised they setup so easily, esp 'crammed' into the room corners outside of the SRS 2s. The sound great, toed in a little with 40 watts of EL34 push pull. Good low end extension too, no need for a sub (in a small room at least).

Once the house sells and I get moved, I'll probably give them their own room.

Cool... I've wanted to check out a pair of these for a while now. Sounds like an excellent speaker for the modest price they command.

I was just looking at their website and noticed there is an authorized dealer about 30 mins from my house. That could be a dangerous trip.

I'd love to see them nekkid' just to see what's changed in the 35 years since mine were made.

What has Magnepan done to improve the binding posts? The vintage MGs have el cheeso plastic (look like test probe sockets on steroids) with thin metal inner contact sleeves. I took a Dremel cutting wheel to mine, stripped out the inner metal, and used the plastic body of the originals as an insulator sleeve for 5-ways - saving the name/channel/serial number plates.

Good on yeah Russ! They definately have their own sound don't they? I still need to pick up a pair of the MMG's as a center. The vertical stands are a MUST on those. I wish I could here them on your tube setup...

the price on the mmg,s is dirt cheap i was thinking of getting a pair of them to play with. people who own electrostatics swear by them i have never tried them. how do they compare to more conventional transducers? how much power can the mmg,s handle? congradulations on the new toys.

Follow up, after some more listening:

I've been spending ALL my listening hours on the Maggies, and I've got them dialed in. First, the MMG's DO need a sub. Not on all material, about half of what I've listened to so far. As with my previous experience with Magnepans, vocals, strings, brass - hard to beat.

The biggest benefit AND problem with Maggies for me is soundstaging. They throw a HUGE soundstage - which works well on most music. The problem is listening, for instance, to piano work - the soundstage is SO large, it's not lifelike at all. Instead of a piano being 'normal' size - the sound projects as if it's 20ft wide.

I think this shows how again how 'magic' the SDA's are - tonality aside - just soundstaging. SDA's throw a very wide sounstage, but instrument placement (and size) within that stage is MUCH more accurate. The Maggies are a joy, don't get me wrong, but on some selections, certain instruments are 3-4 times the 'size' they should be.

Now, on the sub note - time to find something fast enough to keep up with them....

check out a Rel Strata 2 or 3 used. This sub is what your looking for. In my opnion, there isn't a more musical sub on the market.

Another killer sub cheap is the Dynamo from Martin Logan. It's only 599 brand new and man does it sound good. Tweeter carries it. Check it out .

I"d consider something like the Adire Rava or Dayton Titanic. I am convinced that a small sealed sub is the way to go for music. Easy to integrate and goes as low as you need. Having said that...I was impressed with how well Mark's SVS worked with his Maggies.

I wish that SVS would introduce the baby subs, because that's my preference. The current SVS works fine, but it's 98% overkill.

I actually didn't find much trouble in instrument placement on media, but our rooms are different. I listen to alot of Diana Krall and Jamie Cullum and the piano has never sounded 20ft. wide. It does however throw some notes around and they certainly ring beyond the soundstage.
