Okay - I picked up the SACD version of Brothers in Arms the other day and when I use the 'Auto' function on my AVR-3805 to play it in surround, I get the .1 bass but one or two of the other instruments are left out. And when I play it in EXT IN, I don't get the .1 bass but everything else comes through great - except for one very annoying problem - It sounds like the center channel is getting too much bass and it produces a horrible buzzing sound. On other SACD's I do not get the .1 bass when using EXT IN but I figured I could live with that because I do not experience any buzzing from the center channel. I checked & double checked the connections on several occasions in the past and double checked all the settings on my player and processor. Anyone have any ideas what may be the problem? Appreciate any help, Thanks,
Dan

That's strange. Could it be that the mix was originally a 5.0 soundtrack? I know some DTS CD's that do this. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help.
EDIT- nice system btw. how is that Denon (as a Pre/Pro) working out for you?

go into your on-screen menu.
Input Setup -> Ext. in SW Level -> +15db. If that doesn't do it, you have a bad connection or it's not setup properly in your DVD player menu.

I couldn't be happier with the Denon as a pre/pro - well, I take that back.......If I could only figure out why I'm not getting the total output from my SACD's.......

Thanks Toxis - But already tried that - also spent a week going through the player's set up last night........frustrating as hell I tell ya........What's strange is that I don't get ANY .1 when in the EXT IN mode, but I will get it when I go through AUTO on the processor and the unit selects analog (of course), so then I get the sub to fire but some other part of the recording gets lost (no horns or extremely faint guitar etc.) it varies from disc to disc. Very strange....

Since I'm not familiar with your Denon receiver I will just let you know what works with my set up. When I run My Denon 955s (DVD-2910) with SACD’s I use the multi channel input on the Yamaha RXV-2500. If the SACD does not have a .5 part then my sub sits and does nothing. If it does have the .5 it sounds great. If I turn off the mulit channel in and run thought coax (digital) set to auto then I get the full breakout but now the Receiver is decoding a 2 channel input into a 5.1 output. My understanding is that with SACDS the only way to get 5.1 on a SACD is through the Multi channel output. This is why the settings on the DVD player are important.

Thanks JD - But I just discovered the problem. Did some swapping of cables and discovered the SW cable between the player and the processor was faulty. So now I get the .1 (yay!!!) but I still get a buzzing from the center channel at higher volumes. Going to address that in another thread.
As for getting the 5.1 from SACD's, if you have cables designated for each channel (FR, FL, C, SR, SL & SW) running from the player to the processor and use EXT IN on the processor, the signal is pulled directly from the player and not processed through the amp. That way you get the 'full mix' as intended directly from the source.
The thing that threw me through this whole ordeal was that I purchased all new cables when I put the system together, so I was ruling them out.......All better now though!:D  :p
