What is your favorite album cover? Mine is shown below. I bought this without any prior knowledge of the artist/artists making the record. It turned out to be something I really like listening to.:D

Because of the "no name" on the spine contraversy. The whole cover concept of not giving away who the artist was. Sure once word got out it sold like crazy.

It's among the best covers when you consider the story behind the story.

So, BlueMDPicker,
Are you a Roy Buchanan fan? Have you ever seen the burlap bag album he did? "Buch and the Snakestretchers" it was his first album and everybody thought it was a bootleg since it came in a real burlap bag with a stencil for the title. The guy who produced the record spray painted each album cover in his driveway.

I spent lots of time in the bathroom with one of my Dad's Chet Atkins albums. That's where our record player was! Yeah.....that's it! :D That Herb Alpert "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" shown above was one of my favorites also ;)
BTW.....I used to have a Gretcsh very similar to that one in the picture.

Hi Ken,

I'm a huge Buchanan fan, and have a lot of his early vinyl -- but, have only read about that album. I'd love to see a picture of it if you have it.

Mike - You can ask this seller if it is in the original bag. I doubt it, but he does have a pic of it in his listing..

I am also a big RB fan - only got the chance to see him twice - once in Chicago opening for Johnny Winter and once in Detroit as the headliner. Have a lot of his stuff packed away on vinyl (but not the snakestretchers LP) and a bunch on CD as well. It's been so long I can't remember exactly where I purchased the following on CD, but it did not come in a burlap bag - Anyhow, hope this pic turns out - and please forgive me if it doesn't fit correctly, this is the first time I've ever tried posting a pic to a thread....

Thanks Scott and Polk-a-pops! I'm pretty sure Ken is talking about the original vinyl release, but it's nice that they tried to keep the flavor with the CD packaging.

I heard Roy play live in the mid 70's in Kansas City. His recordings don't do his mastery of the guitar justice. He was a natural talent and completely one with his instrument. I've been fortunate enough to see and hear some blues greats perform live over the years. None have had Roy's talent for extracting every possibility from the guitar so effortlessly.

I've seen something somewhere, I think it was in a Warner Bros. store before they closed them all down, that had a few of the Looney Tunes characters crossing the street like the Beatles on the Abbey Road album cover. I can't remember who all 4 characters were, or which band member they were supposed to be, but I do think Bugs, Taz and, Wile E. were 3 of them though. Seems like Foghorn might have been the other one.

I also have a framed, sketched, numbered, limited edition, artist signed 11' x 7' lithograph I got from a WB store that has some of them as the members of Kiss in full make up and costumes. Marvin the Martian is Ace, Sylvester is Peter Criss, Taz is Gene, and Pepe Le Pew is Paul Stanley.

Hello Blue and Pops,
Yea, definitely a Buchanan fan. I have the burlap album on vinyl and a letter of authenticity from the producer/manager of Roy's, at the time. I'll try and post a photo. I never saw him live, I really should have, but missed out on that. I believe he was invited to join the Rolling Stones, way back when. I like "Second Album" and "Live Cuts" very much, but I'll enjoy any of them, anytime.
Take care, Ken

Hi Ken,

Yeah, I'd love to see a picture of that rarity. "Second Album" is my favorite -- "Loading Zone" my least (largely due to Stanley Clarke's mucking about with Roy's sound.)

My only RB keepsake is an original copy of the VHS demo he did for the Fritz Brothers Blues Special Strat. I got it personally from John Fritz, who now works for Gibson USA, and was the designer of the instrument. It was recorded at Crossroads in Gaithersburg and features some great guitar work as well as a 15 minute demo and narrative by Roy of the guitars features. Now, if I could just secure one of those guitars for my collection! ;)

Ken, I mentioned before that I thought the burlap bag was available only to those that attended a show of his, as well, was told that the people selling them in the booth, had a stencil and then spray painted the info on the burlap bag, true/false?. can you post the pic........

My very favorites are the Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna covers. Freak Out by the Mothers of Invention is another. Tangerine Dream has had a long, long history of incredible covers photographed by the band leaders wife.

Another treasure is my Stones Some Girls cover: I got one before Lucille O'Ball et al, got pissed and made them pull it. I REALLY miss the cover art of the old days!

This is one of my favorites too. The saxophone solo on "Sweet Sticky Thing" is awesome.

Bit of trivia: The cover model sued the band/photographer/record company because he had an allergic reaction and her skin became slightly discolored from being covered in honey under hot floodlights for hours.

Bit of trivia 2: The album is very well recorded. The CD sounds terrible.

Was going to start a thread for cds/albums you bought mainly because of the cover but I found this thread and thought I would resurrect it. I bought these primarily for the covers. Tyler Collins is a 12" single and L'Trimm is a regular cd.

Best covers in this thread are the first one (Madhouse) and Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream".

I am in love with that skin color. How could you NOT love a babe who looks like she's made out of honey and cinnamon? Yum.

The Whipped Cream girl was a friend of Alpert's, and not a pro model. I wish she were my friend, especially at the age I was when that album came out. Spent a lot of time at Crawfords on E.14 St and Kings Highway in Brooklyn staring at that cover.
