Any opinions on the AMC CVT 2030s? Is $559 a good deal? I'm trying to get into tubes without getting a divorce.:D
Does anyone know anything about this ? It's in my state, therefore I wouldn't have to have it shipped. I don't trust the one's from Hong Kong. It's an outstanding amp, I would pay around 350-400 for one, and ONLY if it has socketed tubes. For some reason, tube sockets was an OPTION if you can believe that. Most of the 2030's have the EL34's SOLDERED in. When you want to replace, roll tubes, etc - you have to get your iron out, and its more trouble than its worth.
Look for some ASL Wave 20 mono's, maybe an Anthem AMP 1 in your pricepoint.

Don't know anything about the Sherwood. If you know how to solder and replace parts, vintage equipments are great but if you don't, it's a pain and probably not worth the money. Better to get the new stuff. Problem is, the vintage stuff will need more TLC. I'm sure some parts in that Sherwood will need to be replaced and some may be out of tolerance. I've had my vintage tube amp for about two years. It's the best amp I've ever owned and heard. During the past two years, I've changed a lot of parts and I'm still not done restoring it. The vital parts that could go bad over time have been replaced but I want to do a complete restoration staying with stock specs. One part after another.
Don't be afraid of the stuff from China. Russ recommended ASL. It's an excellent brand, IMO. The model he mentioned is great for first timers. If you could save up a little more, check out the AQ1003DT int amp. http://www.divertech.com/asl1003dt.html

I'm not afraid of the gear from China, just the seller. Is there a dealer for the Chinese gear in the US? That ASL you linked might be the way to go, integrated, sub out, and a REMOTE. I might just quit buying all these damn speakers and save up for it. Do you think they have layaway:D . Thanks for the info.

Sheesh! San Francisco is in my state but I sure as hell wouldn't get out of having to have something shipped from there! Is Indiana that small? :confused:

Where the seller lives is only about 2-3 hours from me. I would rather drive to pick it up and save the ridiculous rates some of these sellers charge, plus it's tubes. I'm not sure about audio tube gear, but the tube amps my father and I used to build, for cb and ham radio, could be quite fragile. Just a little peace of mind. If it was a several hour drive it would change that statement.

Should I get this and a pre or wait til I can afford the ASL AQ1003DT Integrated?

Like Russ said. Don't get them. Check out the pics, NO tube sockets! You have to solder the tubes directly into the circuit board. However, if you know how to solder you can solder in some tube sockets or get a technician to do it.

Aha, see the one before for $589 BIN had sockets and upgraded tubes, nice catch. Thanks for reading the new listing. I'd have to buy a pre also and by the time I add up everything I would probably be putting out more than the ASL and still not have that REMOTE.:D
And IMO the ASL is prettier. too.

It's actually cheaper to buy to buy the one without tube sockets and install them yourself. It takes less than 20 minutes to solder in 4 good quality tube sockets ($3.50ea) and $60 for a quad of EL34.
Good choice on the ASL. I almost bought one last year. The EL34 tube is one of the most popular output tube. And yeah, it looks very pretty.

They are very good to deal with. Reasonable shipping and will take a return or replace it if something goes wrong in 30 days.
I have own and have owned lot of ASL gears in the past, they sound very good.
QuickSilver is another choice. if you want to try.

ASL is a decent brand, definetly worth a look. I have some 20W Monoblocks that when paired with something pretty efficient....Mission Argonauts for example, they do very well.

That might be the way to go. Thanks for the link. That'll save me about $300. I could probably get quite a few extra tubes to roll for that, couldn't I?
