View Full Version : Speaker wire question???
06-12-2005, 04:56 PM
I have decided to go with RTi-8, CSi-5 & FXi-3 as fronts, center & rears. The room size for my HT system is not big, only about 12'X14'. I have a question on speaker wires. A crutchfield rep. told me that banana plugs outperform Pin & Spage connectors and since most wires don't come with banana plugs so he recommends Monster CRXP-10 w/ banana plugs? What do you guys think?
Another thing is I'm planning on mounting the FXi-3s to wall studs. And again the rep. told me the speakers come with key-slots on the back & couple of screws and all I need is just nailing the screws to wall studs. Any previous expereince on that? Thanks.

I wouldn't buy anything made by Monster, as a matter of principal.
I don't think that banana is better than spade or bare. I'm not a "wire guy," so all I look for is decent material, solid construction, and the type of termination that is easiest to implement for the given application. That's why I like buying from Signal Cable.

I use Bananna Plugs at the receiver end, as it make for a easier and cleaner (no stray strands) installation. At the speaker end I will use bare wire unless I have pre-terminated connections. Monster makes good products but they are expensive for what you get, you can get similar quality for less money at various places.
As for using a nails, it will work. I have RT35i's mounted on the wall using screws into the studs.

For home theater speaker wire, you can get a 250 foot spool of 12 guage from Home Depot for like $60-some odd dollars that will be just as good if not even better than Monster.
That should be enough that you could even bi-wire your main and center speakers.

i also am needing some speaker wire for some monitor 7's that are coming this week, and have heard about going to home depot or something like that and picking up a spool of 12 gauge for significantly cheaper than what Circuit City or Best Buy charges. i see packaging that talks about oxygen free wire, and see the ads for monster wire, and alot of other expensive stuff/terminology/lingo. how do i know the wire from home depot is as good as the stuff that i would pay more for? what do i look for? or does it not matter unless i have a high end Lsi rig with all the trimmings? where can i go for a technical discussion of this?

banana plugs i've found are no better than other ways of connecting wire to your speakers or receiver/amp. but a good heavy guage wire is important. stick with 12 or 14 guage.
Some people claim that home depot wire is pretty good. As long as it's speaker wire.. i'm sure it'll be ok. WIll you hear better sound if you use Monster. i highly doubt it.. for what at least two or three times the price?
