THIS EVENT IS COMPLETE - THANKS FOR LOOKING
MARYLAND POLKFEST 2005 - SEPTEMBER, 16th(1130-0500) & 17th(1130-0000)
It has been settled, the date is firm, but the details are still being discussed.
September 16th will be the Polk HQ tour w/ a catered picnic on-site. "The Kluge", Polk Audio's very talented in-house band may play for the attendees.
September 17th will be at my home, located in Damascus, MD. This is basically a BBQ and meet-n-greet with a handful of demo programs to hear and enjoy.
The event at my home will be smaller than the HQ tour, so if you do ANYTHING, schedule yourself for the Friday HQ Tour. We will have alot more planned for that location as it's more accomodating to large groups than my refrigerator box behind Weis supermarket ;)
Obviously the 12V/ Car Audio nuts are invited to attend, as they are integral to this forum existing and growing.
If you have comments to add or requests for information, please post them here. You may also contact me directly, but try not to kill me with PM's and Email's as I will post all related information IN THIS THREAD.
Don't miss this golden opportunity to see Polk HQ, meet some REALLY REALLY nice people and get a peek at some really cool new stuff. hint hint ;)
This forum exists because of us being active, stand up and be counted Polkies.
See you in Maryland!
Regards,
Mark

I'm definately in on the Saturday stuff. As for Friday, I'll do my best to schedule my projects around that date to keep it open. Clients don't always help though so that day is 50/50.
Thanks for opening the home! Also, you know what I have around here, let me know what you'd want me to pack up anything for your house invite.

This will be my last gathering, before going into retirement. I don't think my liver can handle another one as is. On that note, I will have a table setup, and be signing 8x10 glossys for all my fans.
I'll be there, I think Southwest Airlines just opened up a non-stop flight straight to Baltimore, the timing couldn't be better.
I'm Rick James, Bitch.

Ill definitely be there represent'n (a little hip hop lingo there) the Car Audio side.
Gonna be a bitch to make the Friday tho. Will have to take off Thursday and Friday without pay.
What the hell. Ive got 3 months to save up the dough. Be well worth it to see the Polk HQ!

Can I navigate to Maryland... hmmmm I'm real tempted.
Brett,
The flight from Chicago to Balt. should only be ~1 hour 20-30 minutes~. Took that flight not long ago. You got the tail-wind in your favor.

I would LOVE to come and have a question. Will the guys flying in be flying into the Baltimore airport? Also, if I fly in can we meet up at the airport and all ride together? I'm still 24 and renting a car at my age requires paying fees and all that nonsense.
If this sounds like a feasable plan, can we get some information about when/where to meet up and all that good stuff? If someone is going to get a rental car I have no problem chipping in my share of the fees.
Thanks!

Why do you guys always schedule stuff when I just START school...jeez. The last HQ gathering was right when I started school...sadly I cant miss any school without falling terribly behind, so I guess I will be passing on this one...
But, for god sakes...take more pictures (that are documented on site) this time, I only have like 6-7 pics from the one I went to...but loads of memories...:D

I left Mark's at 10:00 AM....took the scenic route (didn't hit the interstate for 3 1/2 hours) and made it to my driveway in N. Knoxville by 7:00 PM with several sightseeing stops along the way. I've made it from my house to Warner Park in 1 1/2 hours. It is interstate the whole way if you choose to do so. You could make it from Shallowford Rd to Doro's in 8 1/2 to 9 hours pretty easy if you book it. It is an easy drive from Chattanooga.

I will post more specific flight/ rental/ lodging information when I return from vacation.
I'll cover some places near Polk HQ, Baltimore(Inner Harbor), BWI Airport and of course near Damascus, MD. I cannot possibly cover everywhere so please keep that in mind. I will try and see about some group discount rates for a couple hotels, specifically near BWI airport. BWI is the best airport to utilize for this trip IMO. It's a newbie friendly airport with EASY access to the major routes of travel for the entire Baltimore/Washington area.
We also have a resident rental car guru that may be able to get some excellent deals for the ones in need of transportation and/or group transportation. I'll PM him and ask for details.
I will have some corporate discount codes included but cannot guarantee that they will work miracles.
I am about 45minutes from Polk HQ depending on driving style....that's my style, fast....so your mileage may vary.
Hmmmm....what else....well anyways, you get the idea. Don't worry, there will be enough information for you to get squared away far in advance of the actual date.
If there is anyone with special needs or consideration, contact me directly at dorokusai@comcast.net I don't forsee anything that would be a problem on this end, so please don't hesitate to contact me.

Mark,
Did I ever tell you I have 15 years experience in the Alarm business! Besides being a telephone switchman / carrier person your ALARM doesn't scare me. Also note I eat Lemon’s, taste battery acid so that doesn't scare me either. ;)
Everyone at HQ is very excited about the weekend. It will will be great to see you gentleman and ladies again.

Brad - No problem, just get here, no holds barred....don't be a last minute cancellation.
OK folks, this is it, ramp up to Polkfest!!!!!
If you really want to make your voice known, want to see how things happen, meet the people who MAKE those things happen, etc etc......FRIDAY is your chance to see the Polk machine.
I digress, as this isn't a manufacturing facility, it's more than that....it's Polk central....the Braintrust.
There are ALOT of amazing folks that create Polk Audio products.
Do you wanna meet and shake hands with some of these ppl?
Do you want to meet the AMAZING customer support team?
Do you want to see the "K" machine?
Do you want to see some Polk sponsored vehicles?
Polk Audio has a reputation of high quality, high performance speakers and they BUST ASS to create their products.
Get off YOUR proverbial ass to visit, enjoy, perhaps say "Hello" and "Thanks" to the crew :D
Polk Audio doesn't just say "Hey, stop by when you have time...", you must realize this is RARE to have access to POLK HQ and it's minions ;)

I have just confirmed that Frank Dai, www.signalcable.com will be attending one or both days of Polkfest. Frank has stood by this forum for a very long time, and I personally can't wait to meet him in person. He runs without a doubt a real grassroots business, and the fit here in our forum is perfect.
ALSO, Paul Lemanski from www.adonacorporation.com will be in the same capacity to meet and greet the forum. The custom fabrication he does on audio racks is simply phenom, don't miss this period. Paul will have a couple goodies on display at my house beings we need something to hold all this gear :) There is a special treat for us Polk Nerds, but I'm keeping that secret.
I am still working on alot of other stuff, so bear with me, be patient, but BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW!. The date is FIRM, no changes will occur, and the show will go on regardless of any act of God or our secret leader, Matt Polk. ;)
Al, Stu, Paul and some other, yet to be named, Polk Audio heavyweights will be dropping by on both days to enjoy the demos and check out some stuff that THEY might not have heard....Imagine that!
We will sorely miss the hardcore CA crew since they will be at NOPI, but there are some other things in the works for you car audio ppl. They have stated that there will be autographed glamour shots of them available for purchase, so bring a couple bucks....support the forum ;)
Pass this along, thanks for reading.

Update: Polk is going to post some information in the next day or so about lodging and other particulars. I will add my information afterwards so that you will have a fairly large selection of stuff to choose from.
The plan so far is for a picnic on Friday coupled with a open-house tour of the HQ facility. If we can get "The Kluge" to play for us that would be most excellent. They are the resident musicians up there in Polkland.

Mark,
About how many of the fairer sex will be attending? My wife doesn't want to be the only gal there and if there are five or six, I might be able to talk her into coming on Friday.
Or perhaps have a seperate gathering to the aquarium for the "non-interested" family members that got drug along... I'd work that if anyone else thought it was a good idea, otherwise I'll leave it alone.
Hey DB, I might end up working in Mecca for two weeks at the end of July. I sure hope not... Last group that got sent that way (Yemen and SA) had an armed marine escort everywhere they went. Not cool.

Hi folks! You don't know me yet but you may soon. I'm a old timer here a polk and I'm going to try to put some information here on the forum about a local hotel and rates for you. When our sales guys come in they stay at a local Hilton that is very convenient to HQ. I've spoken to them about getting you our corporate rate. I will also find out if they have any kind of a service to get guests to our Metro for easy access to downtown for those uninterested spouces! Should have the scoop in the next day or so and I will post it right away..............Hedy

That would certainly be convenient, but ppl need to stay where they feel comfortable. That includes high end lodging(Downtown)and of course simply proximity to the airport to get the F outta here after it's over....folks have lives you know. Unlike the Polk zombies that live close and wander onto the grounds at night to replicate.
Create the Polkfest, and they will come, hell or high water :)

I had a meeting at Polk HQ yesterday with all the heavyweights....after they strip searched me and made me sign a confidentiality agreement....we discussed Polkfest 2005. I'm extremely happy to say that they are as excited about this event as we are.
SHOW UP! GET DOWN HERE! YOU MAY NOT HAVE THIS CHANCE AGAIN! IT'S FREE!
How many different ways does it need to be said that this is a rare opening of doors??
I have some information to post regarding the "timeline" for the event and a brief outline of what was discussed....but I have to decipher my notes from the meeting.
All I can say for now is Holy Crap :D It's gonna be very very cool. I drove home with no pants on, that's how excited I was.
I also spoke with Heddy about the travel information and such. She has been working on this actively and the meeting brought up more things to research, stand fast, it will all get posted soon.

If you are within driving distance of this event, YOU NEED TO BE HERE. There is no excuse other than you have died in a tragic Bose speaker accident....and if that's case....
Polk Audio HQ and the hardcore ppl that run that place, are going ALL OUT to accomodate us this year.
You want to feel like an executive? You should come to Polkfest 2005, Sept. 16-17th.
There is alot of really cool stuff that is going to be talked about, demo'd and shown to you, that regular sheep in this world just dream about knowing firsthand. In addition, this is a scheduled opportunity to make yourself known as a Polkie, meet some excellent people from Polk Audio HQ AND the Polk Forum....and rock out to some great gear the whole weekend.
The Saturday event, the 17th, is about forum connection and demo programs. I'm going to have multiple demo rooms, FOOD and lots of little things for you to eyeball.
Do you want to meet Russman, Hoosier, F1Nut and a host of others?....would you like to punch them in the junk? The outcome will depend on how commited you are to the Polk spaceship that we have trailing behind the next earthbound comet.
There are some Polk Audio, heavyweight minions that will be assimilating non-Polk individuals during the Saturday event. Just FYI, it doesn't hurt at all. If you touch these individuals, you will be prosecuted. I'm not going to obligate anyone from Polk in particular, but I'll say that Paul DiComo(PolkPaul)...wait, I'm getting a shock from my implant, nevermind, will be present, even though he and others, have to venture to another market to sell some Polk love. NOPI lives!
I met this past week, some really cool Polk family members, and if you folks read this thread, please chime in with your thoughts and comments about Polkfest. A couple of these guys are from previous Polkfests' and as apologetic as they were, the pain has never worn off.
What company do you know that has corporate individuals take part in major functions for a user forum? Polk does....let me know another and I'll certainly add it to the list. Do you realize the impact this active, grassroots, approach to community involvement has on us as a collective? Isn't it obvious? It's a RABID forum following, a RABID forum community and a RABID family enviroment to alot of us. Klipsch forum? DefTech forum? Bose forum? LMAO I'm sure you get the idea. If you have some data regarding facts contrary to the aformentioned statements, please submit them publically, otherwise take it in the ass and move along.
I personally have nothing against the K and DT as a speaker manufacturer but their respective forum participation is not at our level.
I love this place, it's not my only haunt, but it's my most active. You may not like me, you may want to have my donkey baby, but at least we can talk to one another....agree or disagree, we still move forward. We still learn and we always educate the new people. It's multi-faceted, not caveman.
I mean FAMILY when it comes to Polk Audio as the crew was top notch. These folks have WAY more to do than come to a meeting with a Polk forum junkie, but they did. That alone should check yourself as to what level this company operates on....I can't even expound upon that fact because it's so hardcore.
To our un-named Polk Patriots....The gang wants to meet you as much as Matt Polk. I stated this in the meeting, and it still rings true. Matt isn't the only person that brings these things together, it's the folks that interact with the "crazy" ppl. Al, John, Ken, Kenx2, Micah, Paul, Stu and the other crewmembers that went out of their way to make the '02 tour a reality, TX Polkfest 1 & 2, SC Polkfest 1....are as important to our forum as the forum originator. You are the folks that motivate us.
I want this thread to include everyone at the actual Polk HQ, those that read this area, as my doors are open to you. Just be aware, I have a fire extinguisher and a dog, that doesn't bite, but she will lick an ear off in 39 seconds.
If you want to comment or rag on me please reply to dorokusai@comcast
Get involved, get real, get on the bus.

Mark, It was very cool meeting you! After following this thread, I was surprised to see how really normal you look! Just kidding--your enthusiasm is contagious and I'm actually getting pretty excited about this!
Anyway Hilton finally finished the link for me and here it is. It will allow those who are interested to book a room at a local Hilton which is within about 3.5 miles from our building at the Polk corporate rate. Our sales guys usually stay here when they are in town. In addition to being close to Polk, it's right at the Baltimore beltway and offers easy access to downtown or other desired highways. I'm sure Mark can post easy directions to his place from there.
http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/private_groups/pikhihf_pok/index.jhtml

OK, those are GREAT deals on rooms at the Hilton. I will tell you right now, the only people who get better deals are Government employees/contractors and Hilton employees. $92 a night for a room at the Hilton is a nice deal and the rooms are usually a few steps above a motel which usually runs 45-65 bucks a night. That extra 30-40 dollars is very worth it. Especially with the proximity of the hotel to the HQ offices. You don't even need to drive yourself, the front desk can and will call you a cab if you ask. Hilton also has Concierges(sp?) on premsis so they can find you all kinds of tickets, reservations and transportation anywhere. I do believe that the Hiltons in Baltimore Metro area also have airport shuttles for guests. That is alot of service for $92 a night. If I needed a room to stay in, I'd be staying there at that rate in a heartbeat!

I'd really like to see how people without a government contract number obtain the rates that I and most likely YOU pay when travelling for a project for the government. BTW F1nut---you are right--the brisket at the Ed Mart is amazing, but it should be for $18.00 a lb! The stuff melts in your mouth.
As for the Hilton---they do not offer a shuttle service from the airport. I'm not sure why, but the do have a shuttle van that is available on a first come first serve basis that will go withing a 5 mile radius. That's good because Polk is less than 5 miles away. Also the Metro Station at Old Court Rd. is close by in case any wives want to journy into the city for sightseeing. They can call when they return and get the van to take them back to the hotel.

Polk Audio is very active in many events across the nation to include NOPI, CEDIA and CES. It might not be a Polk HQ tour, but Polkies can make the effort to meet some of the headliners that work at Polk, at those venues.
Polkfest has more than a handful of people flying in to attend this HQ Tour, and even more driving a decent distance.
It's all about commitment. We can't have everything handed to us on a silver platter....or parked in the driveway by a team of horses.

Hey man, bring a PR out of one of them as Jstas said. I did that last year and brought a gold metalic marker to sign it with. It is the coolest freakin thing in my house! One member brought a surround and it looked super cool with the gold signiture on it.

I will be there! I have been reading this thread for the last half hour and I just can't pass it up. I would like to meet some of the great people who have helped me so much on this forum. See you all on Friday and Saturday. Maybe I will bring a PR from my 2.3s for Matt to autograph.

08-12-2005, 12:36 AM
Philip - You would be crazy not to take part in this event, get hot, get a screwdriver, and bring that PR.
Everyone - Polk Audio doesn't open it's doors often folks, are you THAT busy?
I'm swamped, period, absolutely swamped with work but I'm taking a couple days off to make sure this happens, and it moves without problems.
If anything, take off ONE day and drive down for the HQ tour and Meet-N-Greet.
I have 4 confirmed FLIGHTS from Polkies that are WAY out of town....if that's not commitment to this function, I don't know what is. I've personally flown and drivin' to two of these events, and I'm not rich.
I had to sell my Matt Polk autographed pygmy goat in order to make the Texas shindig, and prostitute myself for the SC Polkfest. Don't tell me about sacrifice!
There are some of you who will have the same spouse reaction of, "That's....."
I didn't add anything in that because it will vary. My wife has ZERO, let me say ZERO interest in Audio and this hobby. She is opting for a Spa Weekend in Western Maryland, while we are doing our thing. That's great! It allows me to post bond, and get out of jail, just in time for her arrival. I'm kidding, but the point is that alot of personal and financial sacrifice goes into these gatherings, but I assure you it is worth your time.
This will be my third Polkfest, and Polk Audio has been intimately involved since the day Russman suggested in TPGI. Let's make this one the blowout, and define what participation is all about.
Get off your ass, sacrifice a day and/or weekend and experience something that NO other forum, let alone an actual manufacturer does for ANYONE! We do hapen to have a couple cities for your adventures, Baltimore and Washington, DC. It's is even family oriented.
I will be posting, in a locked thread, local information and POC's for everything that I know by Sunday. I'm counting on Polk to drop some information in the same thread by COB Monday.
PLEASE email me with any questions or comments, as I don't mind at all.

One, big thanks to doro for organizing all this. It's no small task putting these things together and by the looks of things this will be the Polkfest of all Polkfests.
Also, it LOOKS like we will have a repeat performance, limited engagement, by Anna the Flexible. Those that witnessed this at SCPolkfest will tell you this is NOT to be missed.

Unless a money miracle happens between now and then and arrangments can be made for the kids to stay with someone, it is looking like I will be a sitting duck. The money situation around here has been grim to say the least, was just fixing to start a big project at my buddys house when he called me up to let me know that his place had caught fire. Now they are out of the house for at least 2 to 3 months and the cash flow that would have been coming my way is not going to materialize. I would have taken on the project myself but it would have just been overwhelming to say the least.
Guys I hope to work something out as I would really like to see all of you again but it doesn't look much like that is going to happen, it will be depressing to say the least as I have wanted to see the polk digs for many years.
If I cannot make it could someone take a passive ( if I ship it to you ) to the shindig and have it signed for me? Keep your fingers crossed that I can work this one out fellas. :(

Noah - Yaman, I think faster than I can type :D It's often me being too analytical about a couple comments. Ugh, it's just my nature. It's funny you picked up on that :)
logically....I just just Jdhdiggs(James) PM'd me concerning the "For Sale" items and he brought up a good point. Why not list the gear publically.
I am going to list the gear "For Sale" on the locked down, Polkfest Information thread. Please feel free to EMAIL me with any additions to the lot that you may have. This is not a "dibs" or shipping market, it's an onsite market. The first served are the individuals that are attending the Polkfest physically. I don't mean any offense to those unable to attend, as it's simply a perk of being here.
If there are things that don't sell, then they may be dropped into the Polk Flea Market after the event.
EVERYTHING you buy at Polkfest can and will be tested onsite for 100% satisfaction.

The bad stuff has begun to happen.....the Cardas cable for the headphones has developed a short and has been sent to Oregon for repair....the B&K AVR has been acting strange lately and finally died and is being sent to Buffalo for repair.
The fortunate thing is that the B&K is under warranty and while it's up there, I'm getting it upgraded.
I'm hoping that both will be back in time for Polkfest. The HT may be under HK control as I have a spare available just in case something like this happened.
Oh well....that's why I love warranties and manufacturers that are willing to step up to the plate.

Starting around CFrizz and Danger Boy......I need to get a rough headcount of who's going to attend AND if you are coming both days. This is to make sure there is enough food and to organize the groups for the HQ Tour.
Even if you think it's a given that I would know you are coming, you need to respond.
Thanks.
Polk HQ Agenda per Paul DiComo:
10:30 - 12:00 - Facility Tours. We'll take groups of 6 as they arrive. Last tour starts at 12:00, ends at 1:00 so those latecomers will be a little late for lunch
12:30 - 2:00 - Picnic. Food. Mingle.
2:00 - 5:00 - Demonstrations of new and prototype products. Feedback sessions.
In other words, BE ON TIME or you may not be able to get on a tour. Remember, this is a regular business day for Polk, so the schedule is essential for this to run smoothly.
Mapquest everything you need to and from your hotel prior, as I won't be available to guide 10 ppl via phone to Polk HQ.
The agenda information will be posted in the "Please Don't Post Here" thread.

Perhaps those arriving earlier can leave a message with the Hilton concierge of where you will be?
Steve
that's a good idea.
Steve, maybe you and I can swap cell phone numbers.. and we can meet at the airport and drive to the Hilton together. and anyone else arriving at the same time. 7:55pm on Thurs evening.

It looks like I might be +1. My old man might be coming along for the tour.

That sounds great, I hope he can attend.
Get motivated folks! This is getting close and I need to get this RSVP situation locked down ASAP. Just commit and forget about the consequences....work won't miss you....the wife will be happy you're gone....and the kids will just talk start drinking and smoking pot while you're away.
No problem, it is worth all the future therapy.
Thank you to all that have already responded.

Anthony - Bring down some Brats!
If anyone else has something unique to their area, that would work well with a BBQ, please bring it. We will incorporate everything into the food.
I'll also have the volleyball net set up, due to the fact my neighbors kid 14 has challenged you Polkies to some gametime.

I got Brats, handmade. I can get some REALLY good other sausages, too. You got it, everyone will be pleased.

I'm new to this forum. I plan to attend on Friday. Will there be any displays or demonstrations of in-wall and in-ceiling speakers?

Good thought Steve,
Mark won't ask for a penny, but cokes, ice, and whatever won't magically appear.
Hoping to see you all there.

I will have a car so I can stop at the local store and get supplies, or call the local pizza joint and get 6-8-10 pies...
just let me know what direction you want me to take and I`m on it..!!

You better have ice. I like my fine liquors on the rocks ;)
Edit - Who am I kidding, I'll drink it straight up, on the rocks, on the run, on my back....
