I am looking to expand my knowledge of Jazz and my very small collection of Jazz records.
I like laid back stuff like Stan Getz and Dextor Gordon. I also like stuff like Chick Corea, I don't really like the electric band stuff. I prefer the Return to forever stuff.
So help me out with some recomendations. I would prefer stuff that I can find on vinyl.
Thanks,
Todd

Getting a Sat Receiver, if you don't have one already, and tune in to Smooth Jazz or any of the other Jazz channels. When something comes up that you like, log it down. I did that on the atmosphere channel and found some artists that I like to listen to....And if you get one of them nifty XM2go's you can store the artist names you like and scroll through them at the end of the day..

Two of my favorite Miles Davis albums are "Porgy and Bess" and "Filles de Killamanjaro." Both are mellow laid back albums. Porgy and Bess is an old Gershwin opera. Both are fantastic albums and I highly recommend either one. John Coltrane's "Coltrane Plays the Blues" is another good mellow album as well as Dave Brubeck's "This is Jazz: Volume 39, Dave Brubeck plays standards" I think it's Volume 39, though it may be 37 or something around there--can't remember off the top of my head.
The two Miles Davis albums should be in vinyl, the other two I'm not so sure about.

I tend to use the All Music Guide (www.allmusic.com) to look up an artist. The guide has lists of influences, similar artists, and those whose music was influenced by the artist. There's no better source of easily usable plus obscure information on musicians I know of. You can look up genres as well like "West Coast Jazz". The guide is very useful for finding artists one otherwise would never hear about.
This should lead to the Stan Getz page:

I would recommend john coltrane, miles davis, kenny garrett, dave holland, weather report, jaco pastorius, mccoy tyner, joshua redman, wynton marsalis, jeff tain watts, sonny rollins, charlie parker, herbie hancock, pat metheny. Any of these artist would be a great start to jazz listening.
