Since my Onkyo 787 died i am looking at replacing it. I wont be using it a whole lot since i watch movies in my theater about once a month if i am lucky so what do you guys recommend to run the following
Fronts RT55i
Center CS400i
Rears RT55i
Rcenter CS245i

I was looking at the Onkyo 602 but what else do you recommend? Denon or Yamaha?

I recommend you watch more movies! :D

I think that would be fine, I love my onkyo sr 502. That recently released the 503 so you can find 502s for 200 and less now. I have no idea but maybe they'll release a 603 and 602 will drop, it's a long shot though. The 602 doesn't have any preouts which is something that I wish I mine has, but my situation does'nt require it.

Depending on how loud and or how much "more" quality you want from your speakers I do'nt think you'll have a problem with that receiver, especially for once a month use.

Still learning though, put my recommendation on the bottom compared to everyone elses,

Chris

Seems like going from the 787 to the 602 would be a downgrade with reduced amplifier power. I'm not all that familiar with the Onkyo line, but the specs make it look like the 702 would be more along the line of your 787 in terms of amp power.

You have some very nice speakers there and you should buy a receiver that can power them without risk.

I still think that for only one movie a month, the strain on that receiver would be very minimal. Depends on what listening volume you're working at.I looked on the onko website but didn't see that model listed on the prior models so but if it's a "7 series" sorta speak than yes another 7 would put you on that level probably with a few more "modern" upgrades.

Maybe you can go to a local store and buy the 6 series and see if it cuts it for you, if not return it

...I would get something that has plenty of connections (component, dig coax, etc), video conversion, and especially pre-outs....

believe me, when that upgrade itch arrives, and it will, having the ability to expand on what you have makes things a lot easier.

And less costly, in the long run.

Also, if you are considering a Yamaha or Pioneer (1014 or 1015tx), Best Buy has a 30% open box items coupon at their site.....I went to check out the open box inventory at a local BB and they had:

Pioneer 1014tx: $169 ($319 new on clearance) open box, only missing remote
Yamaha 5790: $219 ($499 on clearance) open box, only missing remote

Definately shop around...you will be surprised at what you can get for an excellent price..

If you like Onkyo, and HK take a run to CC and check out their open box deals.

I have a similar 5.1 setup with RT55is, CS400i and RT15is. I use a Denon 1802 AVR and have found it mates with the Polk RTxxi speakers very well. I tried HK and didn't care for it and have been unimpressed with recent Onkyo offerings. These speakers are easy to push so a mid-level Denon like a AVR 1804 (discontinued but can still be found at good prices) or the new 1705 or 1905 would work very well.

In addition to the 1802 I also have a Denon DRA-685 stereo receiver that sound great with Polk RT and RTxxi speakers.

I heard that the 1015tx is a good receiver. I never heard it myself, but heard positive remarks in other forums. Check AVS forum and search the model #..

The 1014tx, last year's model was a clone of the Elite 52tx (except for brushed aluminum front and a few connections in the back). The internals are pretty much the same between the two.

The 1015 is this year's model and I believe offers a higher bandwidth conversion compared to the 1014..

Last time i promise Denon 2805 vs Yamaha 1500, yamaha has more power not by much and is 90 bucks cheaper.

Sounds like you bought an ext warranty??

If so, I think the policy is that if they can't fix it, they will replace your broken receiver with the current equivalent..

Thats true. If it is still in the warrenty time frame and not able to be fixed, you get the new model.

I wonder how he could sabotage the receiver so that they couldn't fix it and still not be able to void his warranty, so he could get a new one.:D :D

The right application of voltage in the right location ought to make a sufficent burn spot to make it not worth their while to repair the unit....but you didn't hear it from me...if they ask me I'm like Sargent Shultz over here...

While working at CC some years ago and knowing some of the service people just by taking a little 120 to the right boards and claiming lighting will do it everytime. For some reason my reciever smells like something electrical hit the boards. Now i have to wait a week or so to see what they say. The 702 looks pretty nice.

Get a NAD and your probelms are forever solved. I have a T763 and love it for both 2 channel and HT. My 2 cents

Jeremie it depends on what your preference of sound is. Do you like warm/neutral sound, neutral/bright sound?

Your polks have neutral characteristics more or less.

As far as new receivers go- If you like Warm/Neutral sound- Harman Kardon, Denon, and Marantz are very tough to beat imo. If you like brighter sound, then stick to Onkyo, Yamaha or Pioneer.

And don't forget if your present receiver has pre-outs- then you could keep it and just buy an amplifier (NAD, Adcom, Rotel, Parasound, Outlaw, whatever) and add to it. That might give you just the improvement you're looking for. =)

I like my Onkyo 702, it has pre-outs, room equalizers, and is 7.1 (or 5.1 + zone 2). I would recommend it over any of the lower numbered Onkyos.

Alot of people here like the HK but I bought an AVR230 and did not like it at all. The sound quality was very good, but my TV speakers had more volume and the build quality was poor. I pulled my sub cable out and the whole terminal came out with it.
I could have just got a lemon, but i have cold feet for them now.

I've owned several HK products over the years and have yet to experience any thing negative, except that they get a little warmer than some of the others. Really it all comes down to the sound he wants to achieve. Like several have pointed out, HK, Marantz and Denon are warm and Pioneer, Yamaha, Sony, and Onkyo are brighter. I have had receivers from all the above at one time or another and they all have their strong points except for the Sony. Sony's audio gear just doesn't do it for me, they have decent video gear, though. The Onkyo actually, IMO, falls in the middle somewhere.

Good Luck in your endeavor,

Noel

I know what you're talking about with the volume thing. It's not the wattage. I have my 235 hooked up to two adcoms and it's the same. I usually keep mine between -35db and -20db. Sorry to hear about your build quality issues- I love mine. IF you're shy about H/K- I would go with Denon. They're my 2nd choice.

Don't overlook the Sony ES stuff though. The regular Sony stuff is crap, and I was quick to jump on the 'Sony is crap' bandwagon - until I heard their ES stuff.

IMO, their ES stuff is top notch.

The Pioneer Elite is also several steps above their consumer line.

I'm of the opinion that if brands such as Pioneer, Sony and Onkyo save their *good* pieces aka "HONEST POWER RATINGS" for their Elite, ES and Integra lines respectively- then that's bullshit. (with all due respect to their owners.)

You don't see Marantz, Denon or H/K doing that nonsense.

the first 702 I got had a dead center channel so off to CC i go to exchange it for another one. Second one works without any issues. The auto calibration seems to work pretty good, i moved it around and it picked up on the difference in feet. I really havent had a chance to use it a whole lot so i cannot give any feed back on it. So far though it sounds good.
