View Full Version : WTB: HT receiver, cheap

Jstas
07-04-2005, 02:48 PM
Cheap as in less than $100.

Any decent brand will do. Pro-logic will do fine.

This is for a relative who is going to college and wants an HT system for his dorm room. He's going to film school and is consequently a movie buff.

Please, if you are going to give me some links to cheesy retail junk for less than $100 save your time, I can find crap myself. I'm looking to help the kid out with something decent. If you have an old HT receiver that you are looking to get rid of but don't want to just give away, I have a poor college kid who will give it a good home.

I'll keep an eye out, but can you at least TRY to tone down the condecending tone when you're asking people for favors?

I can sell you a Sony STR-D2090 for $100 shipped inthe US. I looked for the remote but couldn't find it. It may be somewhere. It has pro logic and connections for 5 speakers.

Works fine.

I have a HK HT receiver. I don't remember the model number. It was the lowest end AVR from HK, something like AVR-20. It is 40 or 45 wpc. I bought it for my parents, but they never used it. It has the remote and manual. $50 plus actual shipping from UPS. If you are interested, just let me know.

Shame about that last paragraph, which presumed your readership to be both eager to please you, and daft, as I was all set to sell you and your film student 'friend' a used but minty Denon 5803 for $95.00.

Oh well, my loss I guess. I'll go cry myself to sleep now.

Oh, my search has ended, thank you to those who offered, I appreciate your efforts.

I hope no one from this forum hooked you up personally.........

If someone here did, how's it feel to basically be given the finger as a thank you?

i'm sure jstas meant well. god knows I know what it's like to be a poor college student- as do prob. most of us. I think it was just a poor choice of words that's all.

And Loud & Clear- you ALMOST had me on that $1200 Denon. Hmmmmm......

$95 you said? =)

Wow, strong words.

Wonder where I did such a thing?

Just because I spelled out EXACTLY what I was looking for in the first post all the soggy bottoms came out of teh woodwork to rain on my parade.

Truth is I am not incapable of operating a search engine and finding some pile of shit Sherwood or a sale somewhere and getting crap. Yet every time I post a WTB thread, that is exactly what I get. I didn't want my time wasted nor anyone elses so I made it clear that anyone who was going to treat me like an idiot and operate a search engine for me would understand that I did not want that route.

Excuse me for looking to help out relative and a club member at the same time. I thought it would be a good opportunity for my relative to not only pick up a decent piece of gear but to get a club member a few extra bucks and maybe free up some room in thier stash.

Sorry for offending everyone but maybe if my posts were read and responded to thoughtfully instead of with knee-jerk reactions, I might be more inclined to be less specific in my requests. All I did was ask for exactly what I was looking. If I wasn't nice then that's on me but what difference is it anyway? I already have the whole forum turned against me and I'm not really well liked because of an undeserved reputation so why don't I live up to it?

Again, I have already found a suitable unit and have made arrangements with the member.(yes it was a Club Polk member but since the lynch party is out already, I'll decline to name names in thier interest) The offer was put forth to me shortly after I posted the thread and I did not have time to post a message stating that because I had a social engagement to attend. (Yes, even being the asshole that I am, I do have friends) To all those who made thier generous offers without the commentary or snide remarks, again, I thank you for your considerations but I have found a suitable unit. I apologize if anyone is offended as brett seems to think but it was not my intent to "give the finger as a thank you". If anyone does feel that way then brett is the one you should have issue with because he was the one who even mentioned anything of the sort.

So again, thank you to those who offered, I appreciate your kindness and generosity to help myself and my college bound cousin. I have found a suitable unit, arrangements have been made and for all intents and purposes, the sale is final. I know who made the offers, it was more than just the two in this thread, and I appreciate it.

All is well,

just choice of words was very blunt compared to what everyone is use to. Of course some like things sugar coated and some don't. It's all ok now...

You know what, eff it.

Just because I spelled out EXACTLY what I was looking for in the first post all the soggy bottoms came out of teh woodwork to rain on my parade.

I'm not a soggy bottom, generally I stay out of your little pissing contests. However, I feel when asking for a FAVOR or HELP, I think it's poor form to dictate the conditions. If you are given advice for free that you don't want, just friggin' IGNORE IT. However, you seem to be unwilling or unable to do that.

Truth is I am not incapable of operating a search engine and finding some pile of shit Sherwood or a sale somewhere and getting crap

Operate a computer all on your own. Good for you. Try and learn some manners next. Basically what you are saying is that you are only interested in getting hooked up for next to nothing. Again, see comments above.

Yet every time I post a WTB thread, that is exactly what I get. I didn't want my time wasted nor anyone elses so I made it clear that anyone who was going to treat me like an idiot and operate a search engine for me would understand that I did not want that route.

Hmmmm....how long does it take for me to scan a thread and skip over posts that disinterest me. I'll bet a few seconds, tops. Sorry, I guess that we didn't realize that your time was so precious and valuable. Nobody is treating you like an idiot, people were probably very genuinely trying to (what they thought anyway) help you out and you piss on them. That's bad manners.

Oh, and help out a club member? How do you figger that one, Einstein? Do you think that if a member were to say, have a piece of gear that he was dying to get rid of that he wouldn't have already put it on the FM? How do you figure you are doing THAT guy a favor? Assuming that everyone is dire need of a hundred bucks? Had you not been such an ass from jumpstreet, I have a unit that I would have donated for FREE including shipping.

I apologize for the rant and for the past year or so, I've done my best to stay out of these types of pissing contests and even tried to bury the hatchet with our hero here, however, I can't abide some little twit with a condescending attitude who feels that it's perfectly OK to piss on people who are trying to be genuinely helpful.

It's your world, Napoleon, we are just wasting oxygen in it....

No, John, it's not worth it to ME.

But, ok, what would it take to get ME off your back? A genuine act of contrition. Where you actually thought to yourself, you know what? Maybe I was a little rude and I'm sorry about that and I apologize. However, you are completely incapable of that.

No, in your paranoia based world where you are always the innocent victim, anything I/we say just feeds into your neurotic little delusion. In your world, you really do believe that everyone else is the problem, not you. However, in the real world, if 95 people out of 100 think you are an asshole, well, that's why they passed the law of probability.

You need help, man. For that, I feel bad for you. I'm not saying any of this because I get my jollies busting your hump. I'm saying this because I really think you have a problem.

I learned a long time ago that emails can be miss read or miss understood. This learning experience for me was due to my poor writing skills. What I think and write are unfortunately two different things. Word engineering is not my best skill, but I work on it. I try to never take one email personnely.

I was not offened by Jstas's request.

I sold him a Sony receiver.

Peace

LOL.....here's a little insight to the man, the myth, the legend in his own mind.

Jstas, "I realized I was a geek in grade school when we had a science fair and I built a complete, working, telegraph network as my project. What beat me? Some kid with a gore factor 'cause his mom, a registered RN, stole slices of a brian that were used for educational purposes. That was 1st place. Second place was this kid who's rich dad bought him a $1700 Edison light bulb that was the size of his fat head and he wrote a paper about it. One gore factor and one whiz bang factor and the 3rd place guy was the only one who did something himself. The only thing my dad helped me with was he gave me his telegraph keys to use and the circuit diagram for wiring it up. I realized I was a geek when I got pissed off for doing all that work and these two kids bought first and second place.

I realized I was a hardcore geek in high school when I was competing in local IASCA competitions for car audio. Then I reached official status by getting a B.S. in IT with a background in EE and CS. Background being that I opted to take Computer Science classes and EE classes instead of the usual History and Literature classes because they were easy A's. My GPA suffered but I learned stuff that I can use at work.

I play video games but can't stand online play because I hate dealing with the people. My favorite operating system for computers most people have never heard of. I have gotten into the practice of building my own audio equipment and I will gladly take a broken pile of crap because it's more fun to fix it and make it work than buy a new one to show off to friends. I have propensity for hardware and feel at home digging around a computer case or under the hood of a car. I have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of car headlights and play a game with my wife where she points at a set of headlights coming in the opposite direction and I have to name make and model. Bonus points for model year/generation. Lastly, to seal my geekness, I am one of those people that you hate to play Trivial Pursuit with because I so rarely lose. I can't even remember the last time I didn't win a game.

Oh, I also get pissed off at Chess games on the computer when they don't include ALL the rules in game play."

Jstas, "Don't trust anyone.

People are seldom what they seem and nothing like what you perceive.

People are stupid, much more so than you can imagine.

The general public is full of deviants and cretins, the only variance is the degree to which they are deviants and cretins.

No matter how hard you try, no one will ever see your point of view if it isn't exactly the same as theirs.

Don't compare yourself to others, they are more effed up than you can imagine.

People will believe anything. (This is a corollary to the 'people are stupid' clause.)

People only see and hear what they want to and are blind and deaf towards reality.

The most powerful thing in the universe is not love or nukes or anything silly like that. The most powerful thing is the ability of the human mind to rationalize anything so that they do not have to feel guilt about saying or doing something stupid or wrong like paying too much for a piece of gear or falling for a snake oil salesman's pitch.

Above all, don't be a bigot. Hate everyone equally."

Jstas, "I have found that to piss off neighbors, find an F1 broadcast on satellite TV and cut out the commentary. The screaming of the engines, I can listen to it all day long. Most other people can't."

From Bobman1235,
"LOL, I woulda put money on Jstas taking that post personally / too seriously. Why can't we bet on these things? I could be a billionnaire."

Jstas, "I was driving home from work and was sitting at a traffic light. Los Lonely Boys was playing probably a tad too loud for having the windows down. This Mercedes Benz SL600 convertible pulls up next to me with the top down. The guy was listening to a local jazz station. I saw him mute it and twist his head around and give me what I thought was a dirty look. I just turned the volume down a bit.

The light turns green and this guy gets stuck behind a left turner and I drove on. I pulled into a convienience store lot to grab a soda and he pulled in behind me. He pulls up next to me and says "Excuse me!" Then he gets out and runs around to the driver's side of the truck. I'm thinking he's gonna get all pissy with me over something so I said "Yeah? What's the problem?"

That last comment says it all.
