refresh rate on LCD's

I am going to be buying an LCD in the very near future. Primarily used for movies and xbox.

i have a few quick questions for all those more knoledgable then me....

how important is the refresh rate??
i.e 6ms, 10ms, 12ms, or 16ms??

if i buy a hdtv monitor that means i need a cable box for hdtv (cable stations) but i can still have hd xbox for games and movies?

waht is a decent resolution to look for (middle of the road quality)?

and if there are other major areas i missed then please inform me!

Refresh rates for LCDs are important, especially if you are going to play video games. A slow refresh rate will cause "ghosting" of images on the screen and can be annoying.

Basically, the faster the refresh rates, the better and anything under 20ms is great for gaming.

Ghosting is when a moving image leaves a trail behind it. It's like a shadow of the image (ghosting) that follows behind it.

Say you move a character in game, with ghosting, that character will have a constant ghost, or shadow trailing it.

You will not experience ghosting of images with the faster refresh times that you mentioned.

Are you getting a projection LCD or a surface LCD?

im looking into 32 inch surface lcd so i can mount it on the wall

You need to look at refresh rate and color resolution together. Most of the high refresh rate LCDs cant display the full spectrum of 65K colors. Also dont look at the published specs alone, as there is no standard way to specify refresh rates. You should review each LCD with a variety of material that should include high action sequences.
