View Full Version : A question about amplifiers

Eventually I am gonna get into seperates. As I was thinking about which amps to look at, I wondered if seperate amps should be matched with regard to wattage.
For example, If I run a 3ch amp for the fronts and another 2ch amp for the rears should they all have the same wattage rating?
I know surrounds arent that demanding when compared to the fronts and center. So could I get away with having a lower wattage amp for the rears?
Thanks a lot

Doesn't matter. Watts don't mean squat.
Now that I got that off my chest, buy as much power as you can from the best quality amp you can afford, especially for the front soundstage.

I wouldn't worry about it. All you have to do is make sure your speaker levels are set correctly and your all set.
I personally have 600 watts going into my main 5 speakers, and 200 going into my back surrounds, and have never had a issue. For a while I had 200 watts for my fronts and around 135 for the rest, again no problems.

all of the above +1.
Adcom 5300 powers the front L&R- 80x2
Adcom 7300 powers the center, side and rear surrounds- 60x5-
and it sounds perfect.

+1 on the different power- here I've got 125w to the center & rears, 300 to the fronts. Also, if you get amplifiers from the same maker/ line (like aaharvel w/ the adcom x300's or me w/ the bryston SST's) you typically won't even have to tweak the levels too much w/ an SPL meter.

Very good point about the speaker levels.
Thanks

No...but by best friend Marc did undergrad and grad (MPA) there also. I've been down there a couple of times and had a blast. He was in the chi psy (spelling?) frat.....
did you ever go to top of the hill, carolina brewery , etc
Also another bar (forgot the name) was upstairs and you could go outside in the back...they had a stage with local bands playing...
Great...Great times there

hehe... if it's in chapel hill & serves alcohol, I've been there, puked in the bathroom, and lit fires in the street in front of it.

I was happy for Roy and happy for UNC that they were able to turn it around after Doherity got the boot
At least Roy can coach and recruit...unlike that wacko Doherity
