View Full Version : New Look (Merged)

Hey guys,
As you can see, I've upgraded our forum to the newest (most secure) forum software.
There's still a lot of tweaking to do, especially with the buttons (a little bulky) and some of the color schemes and table layouts. But the goal of today was to move everything over and make sure it works.
Thanks for your patience, and please, hold the snide comments; it's been a long day. ;)

I think it is a step in the right direction. The whole look and seemed kind of outdated. This one looks alot more modern, i like it. You are right about the buttons though, they do seem kinda bloated.

Was the old forum insecure?
Well.....it's kind of like when your lady returns from the beauty salon with a new and very different hairdo.....it's best not to say any of the following:
don't worry it will grow back.
you look like the neighbors cat.
What the hell happened?
the lunch bags are in the top drawer.
Just messin' with you J-MAN.
I'm sure we'll get used to it.

Hey...what happened to all our snide remarks? Those took time and effort
And where'd all those gingerbread man looking smilies go that were here awhile ago?
Hey...guess what. When you choose a smilie now it goes where you cursor happens to be instead of at the end of the post like it used to. That's pretty cool anyway. :D
This is better than the first time but there's still too much white on the borders and the names are still too big. But I don't want to bitch too much or else you'll shut it down again and delete all our posts. :(
*sniff*
The avatar option is gone! Yeah, its a little bright, but I like where this is headed...

At least we are not all double (or triple or quadruple) posting like last time it was up for maintenance. Not a bad look, but rather bloated. (I like a more condensed option if available.
Looks like you have much better tools to write your message with, but still no spell checker...
I am sure we will get used to it.

This is a CSS based template that is easily moded.
All the font sizes are set up by classes. For example, our usernames are defined in the CSS stylesheet
.bigusername { font-size: 14pt; }
I see in the source code that the "container" is set at 80% and the background is set for pure white:
background-color: #FFFFFF;
I used CSS for the Barbershop Chorus website (http://www.pathfinderchorus.org/) where I'm webmaster. I also notice that this interface pulls in all the IM programs people have. I saw a yahoo icon by my name that opens a window to send IMs.
Looks great Justin, keep it up! :D

Just so everyone is on the same page, I made a comment about the smilies that used an alternative word for 'gay' and a naughty word commonly used for the human posterior.
So just so everyone knows you can't use the 'f' word for gay and you can't use the 'a' word for your buttockal area. I used them in the sentence "And where'd all those "inappropriate phrase" gingerbread man looking smilies go that were here awhile ago?" The reason for the deletion was,
"Yes, "that phrase" is inappropriate. It's offensive and disrespectful.
Don't post any other messages like that please."
I want to sincerely apologize in public for being offensive and disrespectful to the smilies. It was hateful and cruel and I hope the smilies could find it in their hearts to forgive me. I promise to do better in the future.

Could you make the picture attachments more flexible maybe? For some reason I couldn't post my new .jpeg because they weren't .jpeg.
Of course that could always be user-end related (I did follow the rules for pictures though...)

Hi Justin, It always takes a little time to get acclimated to a message board when it gets changed and I expect the same here. On first glance I think I like the new look but I would agree that the margins are a little big. Overall it's a real good job!
nadams
07-30-2005, 03:35 PM
Can you not set it to automatically size for whatever your resolution is? I'm pretty sure the old board did this... and pretty much every other board on the web does...
I don't think the look is so bad, though... and it wouldn't be nearly as bright w/o the margins there.
nadams
07-30-2005, 05:12 PM
Here's a vBulletin board that does what I'm talking about-
http://monster.traxxas.com/index.php
Grab your IE window and resize it... it still fills it out, 'til you get down around 640x480 size or so, then it adds a horizontal scroll beyond that.
I've noticed that where there are images, you have to open a file now?????
What's up with that???? That sucks!!!!! Is it always going to be that way or is it just for the previously posted images only?

I don't know about the rest of you, but the image loading function appears to be vastly improved. Most web site are revamped for a number of reason, not just appearance. Justin,
If we have Thumbnails now are we limited to what in the picture size?
Images are limited to .5 MB each, which is way big enough (too big in my opinion, but didn't want to exclude those who didn't know how to resize images) for any normal picture. The thumbnails are created at the time of upload, but your picture size will remain the same.

Looks good Justin, real good.
Any chance we could get a 'system showcase' link in the toolbar, or in the quick links dropdown?
Not being nit-picky, but the 'new posts' and 'mark forums read' could use a 'buffer' (system showcase) between them, one slip of the mouse, and you're off searching for new posts forum by forum.

Justin,
I agree .5 MB is very large so I will keep my 640x480 or 800x600 so this should be under 150k tops. It will give me some breathing room as the old 100k limit was too limiting for me.
Thank You.
-justin-
07-31-2005, 07:54 PM
Actually it has more to do with the way you save the images. You can have a very large image, but optimized for web (i.e. 72 or 75 dpi, instead of 300 dpi). Also using a compression for JPEGs like 70%, which will greatly reduce file size without really lowering the image quality on the screen.
Russ, there is a link to "New Posts" right on the top bar, you should never have to pick it from the tools dropdown. I'll look into it though.

Most people hate change, even if it is for the better. You keep doing what you gotta do and make us deal with it. Seriously, the people who are here for the community will be here no matter what. The rest... well, they usually come and go anyhow.

First off Im all for progress so I have no problem with the change. Itll take some getting used to but once we're acustomed to it we'll be cruising around on instinct just like before. I also like the thumbnails for images. It makes the pages load faster and doesnt stretch the screen out for mile when they arent resized. If you wanna look at it, click it. Bravo!
Love the quick reply feature too.
Also like the unread threads or threads with a new post being in bold.
Overall, aside from having to re-learn everything, I think this will be a great update.
My only 2 critiques would be the extra wide margins (has anybody mentioned that yet :D ). Like Cody mentioned, the old car audio side was black and I personally loved the way it looked. It was easier to read and easy on the eyes. I also like the idea Justin mentioned of having the posts stretch across the screen.
And one tiny one, it was nice having links to the car and home websites. Maybe put those in the "quick links".

Justin,
Great work so far, keep it up buddy.
BTW just a thought can you add (if possible) browser forward button that could go thru any thumbnails pictures then back to the tread? That would be so cool…..

Ewww...... i really do not like the darker red and blue banners. At first i thought something was wrong with my monitor!
And hey wait a minute where did the colorful buttons go. These new tribal looking symbols to denote new posts a hot thread etc are just plain fugly. I liked the cartoon looking icons that were put up this weekend.
And for some reason the yellow online box as oposed to the green button that lights up just really rubs me the wrong way.
Now i may be nitpicking tiny little things but i liked the new look of the site the way it was this weekend. I did not mind at all the old look but the new one i though gave it a little more of a friendly feel to it. I really like how the car forum is no longer a completley different color. But cant stand the new buttons and colors. everything does not seem to go together anymore. You have the cartoonish smileyfaces with the cartoonish aim, yahoo, msn messenger icons but then these contemporary buttons and colors everywhere
End rant

I actually like the new layout and look, but then I'll be happy as long as we have a functional forum :)
I will say, though, that I agree with the comments about the left and right margins, it'll be cool if you can work up a style where those are pushed out to 95% or so...

I just thought of the movie "Wayne's World" when Garth is sitting at a workbench, and says "We fear change...." and then starts bashing this mechanical hand with a hammer.
Please do NOT bring back those monster icons... they were a waste of space beyond belief.
Keep it like it is, PLEASE...just make it wider! ;)

o :o well, then..... i guess i should read all the pretty text that comes up on the screen instead of just guessing what it says...
I guess i could actually learn to like the new buttons and colors if we changed the smiley icons and the aim, yahoo, msn messenegr icons to match them better. Like i said earlier the new colors and buttons are more simple and contemproary where as the other icons are more cartoonish. I guess now that i think about it i like them both i just think that everyting needs to be one or the other. Either all cartoonish or all simple and contemporary.
I vote simple and contemporary

Guys, you may now access for the forums in "widescreen".
To do so, either use the "quick style chooser" at the very bottom left of the screen and pick Polk [Full Screen]. If you want to permanently select that style, go into your user control panel (User CP) on the top menu bar and select it under options. That way if you log off and back on, you'll have that style always selected.
