Wolfenstein 3D

From what I remember, this is the first good FPS I ever played, and it laid the path for the all other FPS's to follow.

Doom and Doom 2 were both online. I'm assuming Doom 3 is as well, although I've never played it online.

Wolfenstein 3D may have been the FPS precurser, but Doom was a much better game.

PolkThug

When Wolfenstein came out in 1992, it blew everything else away.

Another good FPS that came out of the 90's was called Rise of The Triad, it had (and still has IMO) some of the best weapons. It was one of the first multiplayer games I played over the Internet.

I should also mention MechWarrior 2, the first game I ever played with Voip, it was ahead of its time.

All the memories are coming back now... Descent was one of the best spaceship flying games, and X-wing kicked arse too.

Rise of the Triad relased Dec 21 1994 on a very modified Wolfenstine engine. Here's the weapons I mentioned earlier (Bring back the Flamewall Missile!):

Weapons
The weapon system was ahead of its time in complexity, brutality, and realism. Players could carry one or two pistols, and a machine gun (each of which had infinite ammunition). Players could also carry one of several different missile weapons, considered a realistic limitation. If players picked up another missile weapon, they dropped the first. The players could also drop the missile weapons manually. Like the earlier game System Shock, these dropped weapons retained the exact amount of ammunition they had left in them.

The Bazooka fires a single missile straight ahead.
The Heatseeker fires a single heat-seeking rocket.
The Drunk Missile fires five missiles simultaneously in five different directions; the missiles heat-seek individually.
The Flamewall is nearly impossible to escape from. When the missile fired from it hits the ground, it sends a wall of flame in one direction, and any player whom it catches not wearing an Asbestos Vest is instantly incinerated. If the missile hits the wall or a player, it just makes a weak explosion. This is how one of the numerous end-of-level bonuses in single-player is obtained.
The Firebomb's rocket explodes on impact, sending a twenty-foot-wide explosion outward in four directions. If a player has an asbestos suit to protect them, they can use it to rocket jump.
The Split Missile sends out two rockets locked together, until the player releases the fire button, at which point they split up and heat-seek individually.
In addition, players could wield a magic baseball bat (the "Excalibat"), enter a literal God mode for a short time (complete with invulnerability and the Godfire homing instant-kill weapon), or in a dyslexic gag, enter Dog Mode, in which they were shorter (although the player also gained invulnerablity in this mode), and bit enemies. Dog Mode also allowed the use of the devastating BarkBlast.

Final Doom for PS1.

I thought this version was much better because of the music. The soundtrack and sound effects gave it a very eerie and creepy feel to it. I still play this game regularly and always will.

Technology aside, I think Final Doom is the perfect game.

Gotta agree with PolkThug.

Wolfenstein 3D changed video games completely and how they were viewed. It was ground breaking and far ahead of it's time.

Pitfall was literally the precursor to the Zelda games and other roleplaying games. It was a first to have a story line and multiple paths to reach the end goal. Not necessarily ground breaking graphics work but far ahead of its time in the basic idea of the game.

Street Fighter changed the arcade game forever and we never would have had such titles as Tekken, Mortal Combat, Virtual Fighter and a slew of others without the popularity of Street Fighter.

MechWarrior brought a whole new dimension to FPS/RP games and its engine was so advanced that it took 5 years for computer hardware to reach a point where the average joe could actually afford a system that could run the game at its full potential. You could play the game for months and never see all of it.

Warlords was one of the first strategy games and was the basis for quite a few other games that copied the engine behind it and improved it.

Warcraft/Starcraft/Battlenet and the ease of access to online play broke unprecedented ground in online play and then did it again with World of Warcraft. Games like Everquest and Myst based the online play engine off of Battlenet.

Gran Turismo. Not only did it put the Sony Playstation on the map and steal a huge chunk of the market from Nintendo overnight but it set a standard that was unheard of for a physic engine in a console game. It changed console gaming forever and every other "real" racing game after that mimicked GT in one way or another, some even bettered the idea too.

I also am echoing PolkThugs choice of Wolfie 3d. They literally changed the way we game. Someone else would have thought it up, but when your first you get the props.

I also want to give a vote for Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I feel the best Zelda game out there. Excellent story line, incredibly hard bosses, and the graphics are still good to this day. I never felt so satisfied when I finished that game.

Giving a heads up to N64's version of Rayman 2. great run and jump game. Best ever...no...but fun. Goldeneye was also great, and fun as hell to play with friends.

My favorite WWII game has to go to Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. Folks this is not "another" WWII game, this IS the WWII game to get. Great AI, very tough missions that involve real soldiers from that era. If you like the mini-series Band of Brothers, than Brothers in Arms is up your alley.(Plays a lot like the mini-series)

Best new-generation FPS is Halo and Halo 2. But if it were not for the Halo series, Rainbow Six 3 would be king of the hill. And they by far have the best online gaming. Best third person shooter would go to Ghost Recon series.

Wow, I didn't realize how many great games are out there. This list could go on and on... If I had to choose THE greatest game, it would have to be:

Donkey Kong Country 2

I friggin love this game. It had the best graphics and sound for a SNES game, and the gameplay was just awesome. And talk about HARD. I've played this game almost 10 times since I was a kid, and have only managed to beat it once. I could NEVER finish all of the Lost World levels and beat the game the way it was meant to be beat. That's your opinion. Personally I didn't find Forza all that appealing and since I absolutly despise ricers and every fiber of thier being it really didn't appeal to me. Also, gameplay and the physics didn't seem to be very realistic. That's one thing that GT haters dislike the most is that the cars do not perform as well as people think they should. The dynamics of GT are really, quite close to reality it's just that there is more at stake on a road in a real car so people aren't willing to push a vehicle as hard as they would in a video game.

hear, hear... forza is a much better quick-start game, it's easy to play, but i find that GT is much more entertaining if you're into the ultra-realistic style... forza does have damage, though, which adds a new dimension...

tecmo04

although u may despise ricers to say that is the majority of the game is far from the truth. there are tons of domestics, a nd exotics... just having the ability to mod the body/decals (which i rarly do becasuse it is soooo time consuming) is gunious. combining midnight club with gt4, i cant think of the words to describe my emotions (maybe a tear to two say it best) and then they added damage, i think i need new underpants. gt4 is a fantastic game, dont get me wrong, i was more than addicted to gt3 and 4 is great but ive been converted to microsoft. yay bill gates (j/k), steve jobs is way cooler :)

I like Midnight Club 3 as far as racers go. I was on Need for Speed UG 2, but it became boring to me. Forza, I have never played, but GT3 and 4 I have. I didn't care for it that much, probably becuase I don't care for PS2. I am speaking from experience, mostly bad. My memory cards have lost memory after I was 85% into completing a game, controller not lasting more than a few months, and the list goes on and on. Just my 2 cents. ;)

It's not just stickers a wings that bugs me about Forza. I don't like the premis behind the game and there are parts that seem to make it look like the game supports street racing and that is something I disagree with completely. The game has a different look and feel to it and it makes it too "game-ish" for me to take it seriously as a "driving simulator" game. GT created the "driving simulator" genre and there are many imitators out there, not all have bettered the concept. Also, another peeve I have with Forza is the "attitude" behind it, for lack of a better word. I can't really explain what I mean easily. Look at GT. It's very benign in the gameplay and you are racing the clock and yourself just as much as the competition in the race. In Forza, in the limited time I had to play with it, it seemed that the emphasis was on the car more so than the river and developing the skill to win the races like in GT. Sure, you can go to a Sunday Cup in GT with an Aston Martin DB9 and stomp the competition but to with the races initially, you can't just build a fast car and go blasting around the track. You need to develop skills to get there. Forza didn't give me the feeling like I would have that kind of a challenge and as long as I could find a loophole in teh economy of the game, I'd have everything I needed to build the badest car around. As long as I could steer and keep the throttle button mashed as long as possible, I'd win. To me, that's not fun, that's a time-waster game for when you are bored and looking for something to do. Then again, that's me and what I like and Forza didn't strike me as a must have. Doesn't mean Forza is bad. It just means that in my opinion, it's not for me. I'd rather have GT and I have GT, GT2, GT3 and GT4. I've beaten them all except for 4 and I am having a blast trying to do it now!

As far as GT goes, the only drawback I can seriously fault it for is the lack of damage to the vehicles. They will run out of fuel, tires wear down and oil needs to be changed but there is no collision damage and that is a drag sometimes.

GT2 was supposed to have a Drag Racing section that they never finished. They didn't update the game totals to not include them so you will never really reach 100% completion because of it.

if i want to play an arcade style racing game, the need for speed series fits the bill. however, for a real fix on the need to drive a car like it was a car and not a cartoon spaceship, gt and forza would be the one to do it. i also think that forza is more of a racer's game alowing damage to effect the outcome of the race were as gt is more of a driver's game focusing on the phisics of driving a real car with out the downside of wrecking it. there is a difference.

Super Mario - N64 - I can't think of anything since (or before) that I have put that many hours into. It really did get the ball rolling on the whole "3d" gaming thing.

But from the past - Astiroids, Centipide & Tempest were my favorites. I also enjoyed Q-bert, but that may be because it was the only one I really mastered (the arcade folks would get pissed I would play for over an hour and only spend a quarter).

the castlevania games are the reason i got a GBA, but haven't picked up Dawn of Sorrow yet....
i heard somewhere that konami releases the games in the series for only three months at a time, then pulls the remainder off the market (i've even heard that used copies "disappear")
supposedly, this a marketing attempt to build a rabid fan base that will buy quickly before word of mouth hits
not that "word of mouth" has ever been that bad for the series -- with the possible exception of the N64 disasters, and poor illumination in Circle of the Moon
initially, this sounds ridiculous, but have you ever attempted to hunt down older installments?

i agree...
there was a sharp decline in my gaming with the introduction of 3-D...
not to sound old-fashioned, but the "pick up and play" nature of some of the older games is severely deficient in many of the new titles
nothing against GTA (or even the newer incarnations of Metal Gear), but they're simply not as fun... though highly revolutionary on a technical level
think of how many times you might pick up the original contra just to "play it to the end" vs how many times you found yourself firing up Jak and Daxter 7 (no matter how many game of the year awards it garners) :p
IMHO

Nintendo is all about pick up and play gameplay... especially with the DS and the upcoming Revolution console. Their targer market is getting people who don't play games, or used to, to give new ones a try. They seem to be the only true innovators in gaming these days, so I wish them luck with the Revolution.

Same goes with me, I'll probably be one of their pre-orders for their system.

My Favorite games are (In no particular order)...

-Starcraft
-Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
-Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
-Half-life 1 and 2 (moreso with 1 though)
-And lastly, Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow (they're all the same thing) laugh if you will, but you'll probably agree if you had actually played the game. C'mon an RPG with 150 playable characters, now that is cool.

Knights of the Old Republic - best ever RPG. Spent months lost in the game... second one blew. ha.

Civ3 - just blew Civ2 and Civ1 outta the water, and common.. if you admit it, who didn't spend countless hours into the wee midnight hours, playing.. just... one... more... turn.....

+1 about Wolf3D. Freakin' loved that game!

Got it for Xmas. Civ4 is indeed a masterpiece. By far the best turn-based stategy game ever made. I'm hooked :) But before Civ4 was out, Civ3 was amazing.

For old school games, my favorite was Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System.....man that game kicked butt during its time....

Ditto on that one. I put 100's of hours into that game. It was $80 back then and the most expensive game for that system. But man was it worth it. I still have it with all the maps and shortcuts. It took a while but I beat that game. The first true RPG title. Awesome trip down memory lane. Thanks.

Bankshot, you have a nice little list there.

I love SF2. I can play that game for hours. Have you ever played SF3 alpha, or whatever that one was? I think that one was the best. I enjoyed the SF EX + alpha (the 3D version). It was okay. Totally different gameplay and feel. It was a good idea, but poor execution. The sequel was far worse too. Being a SF nut though, I liked the first one quite a bit. Oh, Capcom vs. Marvel was fun too. Okay, I am going to hookup my Dreamcast.

I loved Wolfenstein. I played the Spear of Destiny too but that got alittle weird at the end with ghosts and mutants. I liked the original better. Searching around for secrets on the walls was great. I liked Doom better though, they story was more fun, the guns were cooler and so were the monsters. Quake and Quake 2 were awesome. The three Unreal Tournaments were alot more fun the Halo.

I loved the Heroes of Might and Magic series, except for the newest one. That one sucks.

I also loved Warcraft/Starcraft and The Command and Conquer games. The CC Red Alert games kicked ass and so did the Tiberian Sun games.

For playstation ans PS2 of course the GT games kick ass. So do games like Ratchet and clank, Jak and Daxter, Crash team racing (for ps1) and 007 agent under fire is alright. It's a good fps to play with friends. I hate that the ps2 doesn't have the ability to have 4 players playing at once with most fps. Shooting friends is great fun and its a pain in the ass to have to hook up another playstation just so i can kill some of my friends :)

Great games of all time. OK. The "PONG" and "PAC-MAN" are one the first videogames of the hisotry. Every world know that. "SUPER MARIO BROS" and "SONIC The Hedgeog" are icons of the industry of games.

With consoles of 32 bits like PS or Saturn I have the best hours, days, months, years of entertainment IN my whole life (Eg: "TOMB RAIDER" "GRAN TURISMO" "SEGA RALLY" "VIRTUA FIGHTER" "METAL GEAR SOLID" "RESIDENT EVIL" "WINNING ELEVEN" (I hate FIFA's) "STREET FIGHTER" "NIGHTS" "TEKKEN" "COLIN MCRAE RALLY" nad very long ETC.) :)

The consoles of new generation like PS2, Dreamcast, XBOX ... i very pleased...but less than my "teen" years when enjoy the previous generation of consoles.

Bye bye !!!!

Mortal Kombat version for Genesis was good because they did not censor it. Remember that whole fiasco? I really can't rate the best game because of the different generation of systems so I'll rate the best in each gen...

this gen(Gcn,ps2,xbox)-
1.metroid prime(gcn)
2.Halo(xbox)

32/64 bit era(ps1,n64,saturn?)
1.Goldeneye(n64)
2.Final fantasy 7(ps1)...(the only rpg i had fun playing for some reason)

16bit era(genesis,Snes)
1.super mario kart(SNES)
2.donkey kong country 2(SNES)

8 bit era (well.... i guess just NES)
1.mario 3
2.blades of steel

but if i had to pick a game I had most fun playing, it would have to be goldeneye. I lost a good year of my life playing 4 player deathmatch(and so did my friends:) ) but it never got old. It was kinda tough to rate the 8 bit era just because I was born the year it came out, but I do remember when I was very young playing both these games and loving them.

my entire junior year in college was one long hazy afternoon spent playing this game with three of my best friends
one-shot kill in the facility with pistols -- no other way; we liked the autos and the runnin' and gunnin' but nothing in video games could ever beat being locked down holding steady around a corner with the aims up waiting for a knee or an elbow to peek through; that is unless two players were in the same position and it all came down to who would flinch first; hell, i've seen these stand-off's go on for upwards of 30 minutes
yeah one shot kill in the facility with pistols (winner takes all)

The DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION series! Man, I've been playing for about a year and a half and I'm HOOKED. Each new game in the series get better.

So if I could only pick one of them it would have to be DDR Extreme2 for PS2. Fun step patterns and wicked ass shaking music.

Other games that is higher up on my list are...

-The Legend of Zelda "A Link to the Past"(SNES) Ooooh the memories. I think I'm gonna play this tonight:)
-Final Fantasy III(SNES) Great story, characters and music
-Halo(XBOX) We all know about this
-Killer Instinct(Arcade/SNES) The sequels just suck compared to the original, especially the arcade version.
-Mario Kart(N64 or Game Cube versions) Amazing when you have 3 friends over and battle it out. Every second word coming out of your mouth will be the F word
=Dead or Alive 'Extreme Beach Volleyball'(XBOX) Not the deepest gameplay, but picking your beautiful woman, taking them shopping for new bakinis, sun glasses, rings and other wicked accessories was super cool. You can get them to tan too!

Those are the only games I can think of right now.

Personal favorites (All for the computer):

Math Blaster - Yep, talk about going 'way' back! I hated math with a passion, and this game made it pretty darned fun. It marks the only time in my life to where I looked forward to solving arithmatic, vice running away from it.

Aces of the Pacific - Talk about a game that changed me - forever. Purchased as a B-day gift for my dad, I got hooked on this flight sim in a major, major way. Despite being over a decade old, it is still one of the most historically accurate, and complex (in terms of career and missions) flight sims ever made. In my eyes, it is *still* a flight sim which I use as a benchmark to judge all others.

Doom 1 / 2 - Talk about a classic if ever there was a classic. Wolfenstein got the ball rolling, Doom made it an immense success. Great graphics, great 2vs2 player action. Great fun... Great atmosphere.

Warcraft 2 - This strategy game really did set the pace for the genre. A storyline that is just out of this world, with a great sound-track and great graphics for the time. From single play, to multi player, to map making - this game is what really rocketed the strategy genre.

Total Annihilation - The sales for this strategy game was never too high. Just the same, Cavedog entertainment released a game that contains perhaps the single best gaming score I've ever heard- obviously this composor was heavily influenced by John Williams. The gameplay and the means to go about collecting resources was genius - even by todays standards. From the animations to fierce styling - its one of my all time favorite strat. games

F-22 Raptor, from Novalogic. As a simulator, this game fell beneath a few marks. It was more like a cross between a complex sim and an arcade game. At the time, the graphics were stunning - but the single player sucked balls. So what made this flight sim so great? Its multi player and its community... Never have I experienced anything like it before. The game was popular enough to allow people from all over the globe to join the 6-7 servers hosted - giving you more than enough competition - yet it was small enough of a community to feel just like that - a community. What can I say? The game changed me forever..

Since then, I haven't found too many game's I've really been into. Sure, there are some fantastic games out there - but all I've tried haven't given me the want or desire to stick with it and dedicate my time to perfect a craft/skill.

How could I forget "Duke Nukem 3d"? I feel as though I have let down not just myself, but my family, friends, and gaming industry as a whole.

Anyone who has played that game remembers the attitute. Language and taunts such as;

"Your face, your ass, whats the difference?"
"Its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all outta gum"
"What are you, some kinda bottom feeding scum sucking algae eater?"
"Bitchen"
"Holy sh!t"

And on and on. Great stuff. This game came right along just before certain changes began - making the strip clubs particularly entertaining.. even in multiplayer. When you 'wasted' one of em, money floated on down.. beautiful.

That was one sweet game alright. Pretty good 1vs1 multiplayer too.

Speaking of great/funny one liners, I forgot about Fallout I, II, and Tactics. I loved Tactics.

Plus, the ability to switch from turn base to real-time was great.

This was one hilarious series, especially when you took aimed shots at specific body parts. :D

Sean,
LOL. DN 3d was really something. I still liked the original Doom. I liked the dark and gloomy atmosphere more than the futuristic stuff.

Another one to add to the list the The Simpsons: Hit&Run That's an awesome game. Just like Grand Theft Auto but with the Simpsons characters in Springfield. So cool

Forgot to mention it, but THE BEST boxing game on any console was a game called 4-D boxing for the PC. It was way back during the MS DOS days. :D

Ah! Forgot about boxing games. My favorite is "Super Punch Out" for SNES. That was funny. "Ready 2 Rumble" on Dreamcast was also fun.

Atari 2600 - Asteroids & Space Invaders
PC - Xwing, Tie Fighter, Doom2, Duke Nukem, Quake 2 (still my favorite online pc game), and Half Life (Counterstrike online - 2nd favorite pc online game)
Xbox - MS Links, Battlefield 1942 (my new favorite online), and Star Wars Battlefront. (Was going to get BF2 but got 360. I'll get it if Microsoft includes in their backwards compatability updates  )
Xbox 360 - Hoping BF1942 on 360 will be my newfave, waiting impatiently for it though since my original Xbox has left the building.

I was in storage looking for some college books and saw my n64, so I said, what the hell, grabbed the system and games and headed home. Well, I have to say, After playing through most of the games I loved when I was younger(including pilotwings, star fox, turok 1&2, excitebike, etc., etc.) , I lost interest in most of them very quick (I was laughing my ass off playing star fox cause the voice acting is done so bad and just the story is just dumb). They just seemed very out-dated and well they are. So when I popped in goldeneye, I got nervous cause I knew this is one of my favorite games not only in this generation, but of all time. Well, its been almost ten years since its release, and its just as good. Yes I know the people's heads look like boxes. But I don't care. and sure the controls aren't as good as most FPS are today. But they are also not as fun. I don't think I ever had the much playing a single player game then playing the aztec level on 00 agent (haven't beat it yet, but give me time:) ). I think I might have to call my old buddies from back in the day to play a 4 player deathmatch on library. Care to join us?

Well, I think you can point two and two together and figure out why I posted this in the "greatest game of alll time" thread.

I like to give it a shot but I'm a lefty and I doubt they have lefty versions of that game.

Actually there is a lefty option for you to flip the guitar...and since it's an SG copy, you won't be at a disadvantage...

Give it a try..

Robotron: 2084

Any of the classic Williams games still hold up, really...never get old, and even if you 'master' them they will still find a way to kick you in the rear from time to time.

Tie Fighter for PC was the best game I've ever played. I hope they do a new one in the future...:D
