Anyone out there know of any preamps or receivers that can decode Dolby Digital Plus or DTS HD? These formats seem to be comming out within a year or less when the new High Definition movies on blue ray or hd-dvd are released. I am buying a new pre amp right now, and was wondering if any pre amps can decode this yet? sure would hate to have to upgrade yet again.

Don't forget Dolby Digital's just announced new format True-HD. I doubt any equipment can decode it yet, since there is no media for it, there aren't even any commercially available players yet. Toshiba just pushed back their release to the beginning of 2006, I doubt we sill see units with this ability for another 6 months. All the new formats are backwards compatible, ie they can be used with today's equipment, I assume they will just down-convert the signal.

Sunfire & anthem both allow codec / firmware upgrades... I think B&K you can get upgrade chips. Whether those guys will release updates is a different story. I'd trust Anthem (they're on top of their game), but I dunno about the rest.

i know my harman/kardon 7300 is firmware upgradable and also has direct 8 channel inputs -- which is what dolby truehd seems able to take advantage of.

I sure hope HK will provide firmware upgrade to support the new codec. My gut feeling tells me that it is not going to happen - they want us to pay more $$ to get the new goodies .... Quite frankly, I have yet found any firmware upgrade from the HK site.

The new surround formats aren't finalized yet, so it sounds like they won't be on any of the new models this fall.

not yet, but dolby's site claims they are. at least supposed to be mandatory on hddvd and "optional" on blu-ray discs. http://www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/trueHD.html

B&K is very good about upgrades and updates. Some can be done from downloads and others are done by sending your unit to the factory in Buffalo NY. I have a pre-pro that has gone through 2 added generations of major upgrades and it was just in to the factory for repairs and they did another minor upgrade to current standards at no charge (either for the repair or the upgrade). There is another upgrade coming out soon that will cost. I have a 6-7 year old pre-pro that is still very current. B&K is a very good company to deal with.
