I dont really like lights on when I watch movies. If you do, grab a blacklight, doesn't seem to interfere with my movie watching when it's on but there's still enough light for me to see things.
try this link, it's a how-to, but the first couple of paragraphs give a insightful look at back lighting.

hfma nice link, never knew cnet knew about backlighting.
I personaly do use a backlight, one of the cinemaquest standard ones, I think it was about $60 when I bought it, and did a world of wonder. I can't say how it affects picture, alot of people claim it makes the picture look more natural, colors better, yada yada, I think it does improve picture slightly, but I'm no expert. What it does do for me is let me play movies with no eye stain, or play games. Before I got it I would get tired of watching a movie around the hour mark, I would sometimes stop and go do something else for a little while. Now I can easily watch a whole movie through, or play games for hours at a time. The main thing for me was in movies changes from dark scenes to light scenes would hurt my eyes. The change isn't as drastic with the backlight.

At circuit city I saw one of those new tv sets with the built in back lighting. Weird thing, it brightens and darkens as the picture on the tv changes.
I thought about making my own back lighting by putting a small fluoroscent light maybe a 6" one behind the tv and plug it into a socket so it powers up when everything is turned on. More of an ambience thing.

depends on the tv and what i am watching. for a front projector i like it super dark. the projector has enough light to light the room. in all other i like a little light behind or above the tv

I can't seem to find an 18" 6500k fluorescent light (or close to it) at Lowes/Home Depot. All I seem to find are the undercabinet models that connect to a ceiling fixture - not the plug-in kind.
Any suggestions on where I can get one?

Got the light mounted ,but i think its more of a distraction than any thing else. When the lights are dimmed all the wires and cables are visable with the flourecent light on and the speakers stand out more , which for me takes away from watching the movie because of all the thing your constently finding little things to grip about. Maybe I should just try to dim it down alittle or maybe it just takes some getting use to
Have you watched the video on the site I posted, millerman? Make the area of light in the back of your tv smaller using foil.
kberg, i'm in the same boat. I wasn't able to find a portable fluorescent light either.
