Never thought in a million years!
some backround. I have 2 trucks (not including my wife's corolla everyone saw at polkfest) 1996 jeep cherokee and 1991 GMC Sierra
the 1996 I bought new, and has been my baby for close to ten years
the 1991 was my dad's truck, he passed away last November, Its a cool pick up truck with 70000 miles, not to mention its like having my dad with me when I drive.
however, both are gas guzzlers. I've been entertaining the notion of getting a smaller car for gas mileage purposes (trade Jeep, Keep Dad's truck, I just cant get rid of it.).
Have been miling around with the likes of another Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Nissan Altima, Pontiac Vibe, etc. All test driven, just havent chosen.
fast forward to today, I take my sister in law to test drive a Volvo S40. I see a Base Model S40 with a 5 speed in black. the car kind of calls me. The dealer lets me know he wants to dump it for 22000.00 (sticker = 24500). I test drive it for sh*ts and giggles and was amazed. What a car!!! 5cyl 31 MPG highway, a 5 speed thats a blast to shift. Handling?, like it was on friggin rails. I was taking offramps at 55 and it seemed like the car wasnt even trying. for a little more than the cars I was looking at?, no brainer so, I bought it. pick it up Monday.
My god, if you told me years ago that I would be driving a Volvo , I'd have slapped you for the insult.
seems like a great car to drop those sweet polk SR car speaks into :D

I hope I dont get into trouble with this thing. the only car I drove with better handling is a Vette. I'm not kidding, the car begged you to drive fast into turns!

Am I crazy in thinking that you in the front seat of an S40 would be somewhat like the look of the car that all the clowns climb out of at the circus? :P
Congrats on the purchase.....the added mileage will definitely be a good thing.

Although Volvo sold its car manufacturing business to Ford recently, the other Volvo businesses are thriving independently, one making jet engines for these (below) as well as some production sharing on the engines for the YF-18 Hornet as well as rocket engine components for the European space system.
Enjoy your new Volvo! :D
Volvo....heheheh!!!! ;) :p
Lou in a Volvo............hmmm.............just doesn't seem to fit!!!! :D
I could see you in a Caddy or any domestic truck or suv, but A Volvo..nah! :D
j/k The new Volvos are sweet rides and finally look good, too. Congrats  :)

the fit is tight, but comfy. I actually like smaller cars, kinda makes me feel more connected to the car when I drive it. as long as my knees or gut dont smash the steering wheel or dash :D
Beardog got a kick out of seeing me drive the Corolla, but that car is more roomy than you think

If I were any taller, I'd have a problem though, Brette, that would rule you out of S40 ownership :p

I'll allways remember that ride. the Jeep and me have been through everything. Dirt, Mud, 5 Ft snow drifts. I'll miss the old girl, but the time has come.

congrats on the new ride..
I think you`ll fit a little better in this one..!!
Nice car...I know somebody that has one.
They are definatly not the Volvo of past...they seem more like the new mercedes, BMW type that are becomming more popular these days...
I have my sights set on a BMW M5....
unfortunatly my bank account is shooting blanks...
May trade all my vehicles in , and see how close I can get though..
Enjoy the new ride..gas milage is a big factore in any car purchase these days..
looks like the Volvo delivers...
Time for the SR`s..!!!!
you know you will..!!

So, not only do I not want to see you angry and running full speed AT me....I have to worry about you being in a vehicle, great.
For those that don't know, Lou can twist a normal man into a pretzel in less than 15 seconds.

Congratulations, good looking car,if they are still built like they used to be ,you should enjoy many trouble free miles, not to mention that they are a good "crash" car,,,god forbid--enjoy

Nice car man. It's exciting to get a new car.
Before the gas prices went crazy , I owned a BMW which got 25 miles average to a gallon around town and 30 on the highway. I Started Mountain biking , the wife couldn't drive a stick well and hated when I took her truck (Nissan Xterra) so I decided to trade in the BMW and buy a Nissan Pathfinder Se. It gets 15 miles to a gallon around town and 18 to 21 on the highway. Big difference. I liked the extra room inside the Nissan over the BMW x3 which was my first choice. the X5 was out of my price range. So now I'm not out joy riding because I get angry everytime I fill my tank.
And of course like my BMW the Nissan requires Premium fuel so it's even more expensive.

congrats on the new ride..
I think you`ll fit a little better in this one..!!
wanna laugh bear? I think the corolla has a litle more interieor room, but it just might be the layout, it feels closer to you in the s40
hey Doro. I only do the pretzel thing to those who REALLY deserve it
George, they are still great crash cars. I ride on an ambulance and have seen volvo's (even new ones) take hellish hits with ease. It would take a howitzer shell to kill an occupant.
Mantis, that pathfinder takes premium? eeeesh, thats brutal. Thats pretty much the fuel economy my jeep offerred up. the matrix XRS I was looking into required 91 octane for its more powerful engine (178 hp, redlines at 8000+!!), its why I ruled it out.
thanx for the well wishes guys, forst new car in a while and I'm excited and nervous. nervous for no reason mind you, just nervous :)

I always loved Volvos. We had two when I was growing up. A 1984 blue one and a 1982 burgandy one. Some of the most underrated cars on the road if you ask me, plus the ones with AWD are great year'rounders. Congratulations.

The S40 is a GREAT little car. The ONLY reason we did not buy one is because there is NO room in the back seat when I was driving. I'm 6'5" so I might as well have a 2 seater as the S40 with no room for folks in the back.

Well you could always rip out the front seat and sit on the rear seat ala Officer Moses Hightower! (A little Police Academy reference there) :D

The Volvo that I REALLY like is the Volvo C70 Coupe. Unfortunately now they only make this model as a convertible. I couldn't afford one when they were still being produced. A good friend has an immaculate white one and I have dibs if he ever wants to sell it.
