I'm having some REALLY annoying problems though.

The audio side sounds fantastic, however I just bought a 30" Tube TV... and boy does it show a good picture.

However I keep seeing pink and (sometimes green) splotches on my screen when I'm watching movies or playing video games.

The man at FutureShop told me that it was because the magnets in my speakers were probably too big and causing my tube TV to demagnetize??

I've done a little bit of research on the matter, and I heard there's some sort of equipment I can install behind my TV that will keep it "aligned" ... does anyone have any real experience with this? Does it make sense?

The thing is that I'm not so sure it's the speakers. Cause I've physically moved my speakers away from my system and there's still some discoloration. Could it be the amp? Am I doomed to never being able to use a tube TV with the audio system I've just finished building?

Thanks everyone!
Pictures soon, I promise :)

Your speakers are shielded and your sales guy is full of DODO. Your tv is the problem. It it's still under warranty, get a replacement or have it repaired. It it's not under waranty...UPGRADE!!:)

Laura Hi try checking your video cable. Are you using a svideo cable or component. Might be the problem. also try adjusting the settings on your tv using a video set up disc maybe avia or video essentials. I dont know everything you tried so i am just adding a few suggestions.
Good luck
Bob

Congrats on the move to TO. I, on the other hand, could not wait to get out. Good luck on the TV.

Hmmm interesting. I heard from a couple different people that it could be magnetic fields screwing up the TV, but I'm happy to take your word that that's not the case!

Since none of you have problems running your high end equipment with Tube TVs maybe I'll just exchange it for another tube.

Thanks everyone :)

We're not saying that it's not magnetic fields, just not magnetic fields coming from your speakers...

Definitely try another TV...

Actually if you got a magnet too close it'll stay discolored even after you take it away. A lot of TV's and just about all monitors have a built-in degausser that'll fix this every time you hit the power switch, but yours might not. I'd just swap the TV, but if you want, try out a degausser.

Also: is it blobs, or a discoloration at the horizontal edges of the screen? The latter can be caused by overscan.

Pink and green sounds like EMI to me, its not the TV itself. Unhook your tv and take it to some other location in your house, run it for a little while and see if the problem goes away.

Oh and if it is local EMI, the easiest check is to just turn the tv on its side. the blobs will stay put relative to the floor (while the picture is rotated)

Unc2701 that is a 30" CRT!!! She ain't turning it on its side in this lifetime by herself. My 32" tube weighs in at close to 150lbs!!!

When I had my unshielded Infinity tower speakers next to my 32" TV, they caused the screen to have a light green hue in the corners of the TV. By moving the speakers further away, I was able to get rid of that distortion. My Polks do not have that problem.

Again this was a color distortion in the bottom corners of the TV and not randomly on the screen. Simply moving them further from the TV cured the problem.

Yeah I don't have many options for moving the speakers. I don't think it's the speakers though, anyway. It has to be the Monster 2-Channel amp or the receiver. Apparantly the amp produces a big copper coil or something? It's one big magnet, or something? I think that's what someone told me.

Because I removed my speakers entirely and it was still hapenning. Also, didn't someone say the RTi12s and CSi5 were shielded? Now it could be that It's cause I already caused irreperable damage....but I think I'm just going to return it anyway, and get a Sony Grand Wega... I won't have this problem with LCD Projection will I? What about Plasma?

I am going to go at this from a different direction.

Have you picked up any bad habits since moving to Toronto? Acid maybe?

I have both the RTi12s and the CSi5. It is NOT your speakers causing the problem.

Plasma is not affected by magnetic fields. I am not sure about LCDs.

LCD's are in fine in that they won't be discolored by magnetic fields... however, having EMI/ RFI sources is always bad, so I would still try to find the source. Does the Monster have a toroidal power supply or EI? EI ones tend to put out more of a magnetic field...

with lcd and plasma you'll have to buy yourself a mounting rack or mount your csi5 somewhere special, as you'll have no room for it atop the thinner-style televisions. or check into front projection?

I've had speakers overcrowding my media room for some time now. At times I've had my Monitors about 6 inches from my CRT and I've never had an issue with the picture. Just my $.02. Good luck and congrats on your move.
