I keep seeing more and more people talking about turntables. Who has them? Any price range is OK.

Obviously I listen to vinyl most of the time. CD's are OK but the black circle is where its at!

I have one in use that I picked up from doro last year. It came equipped with a sonus cartridge, I just wish I had a few more carts to roll in and out to play around with. I have been finding quite a bit of new material to play around with for around 25 to 50 cents a piece, the collection is starting to grow again.

Remember Radio Shack?

42-7012 Fully automatic belt-drive turntable w/pre-amp (in case your new A/V doesn't have the magnetic inputs anymore) $99.99

13-1334 Curtis Nostalgic Turntable includes CD player, AM/FM (probably looks better than it sounds) $99.99

42-7013 Direct Drive Manual Turntable by Accurian $149.99

No, I don't work at Radio Shack - I've just enjoyed my 42-7013 for a while now...

I have a Dual CS-741Q TT with a Shure V15xVR cartridge. I play LPs every weekend for about 2-3 hours. I use an external DAC with upsampling for CDs and it can't create the space and openess of analog. Playing SACDs comes close, though.

I have a Dual 704 that I like alot. I have been spinning vinyl as more of a fad type thing as of late. The main thing I like about vinyl is the hunt for good, used, cheap stuff.

I have two pioneers (PL-5something for my rig; front loading PL-86 for the woman's) and a technics 1200 for abuse. I rotated through a few nicer ones (Pro-ject, rega, etc), but I didn't trust the guys renting my house with them, so decided to hold off on a nice TT until I had the space to put it in my main rig. Since I've got about 1200 albums I'll probably be sticking to the vinyl for awhile.

Several... the most commonly used one is a bang & olufsen TX-2 tangential with MMC-4 cartridge on the living room system (EICO HF-81 and, usually, the Cornwalls).

No tt in the family room with the Monitor 7A's... it's an SAF thing.

I have a Dual 604 with a Pickering XV-15. Love it, but haven't used it much of late. Having issues that seem to be common with Dual tables. Getting very low sound from the right channel. Have tried several "quick" fixes but have n't had any luck. I need to re-wire the tone arm and I'm not sure I trust myself to do it. When it worked, I'd listen to and album almost daily.

I too love the hunt for the great LP score. Finding a great album for $.75 when it should cost 20 times that price is great. Mostly buy 80's era music, Talking Heads, Police, Clash, Elvis Cosello, Oingo Boingo etc.

Thinking about a upgrade to a Music Hall MMF-2.1. Maybe Santa will bring me one (in my 30's and my parents still like to give me gifts from Santa).

MMF-5 with a Goldring 1042. LPs from my High School and College days enhanced with thrift store finds (love the price, hate the cleaning).

As with CDs, a decent system makes the crap recordings sound more like crap, but the great recordings sound even better.

42-7013 Direct Drive Manual Turntable by Accurian

I just got this as a gift from my neighbor brand new in the box.
How does it sound compaired to other brands and is there anything I need to look out for when using this with my 7.1 receiver?

This is the first TT I have ever owned!

I just set up my system after selling our house (the system had to go down because it made the liv room look too small) and building a new one. I set up my Techniques 1200 with a Shure V15 type 3 and it sounds good. I had almost forgotten that LPs can sound as good or better that CDs.

Finally settled on the VPI after trying out 4 other decks over the last year+. Hoarded about 750 albums over the same timeframe and I'm still working my way through cleaning and listening to all of them.
I voted for "most of the time", but its really about 50% of the time. CDs and SACDs still make up a majority of my collection and I love them, but the older stuff on vinyl is just magic.

Yep - got a Kenwood, which was part of a system deal back in 1986. Used it as recent as yesterday. Always looking on eBay Oz too - would like to acquire a linear Technics or something else similar - wish we had Audiogon or Craiglist in Oz, as you get some good stuff on that over there.

Just gonna spin Tears For Fears, The Hurting on vinyl right now - ciao!

When I started this thread I think I was spinning vinyl maybe 60% to 70% of the time. Shortly afterwards I disconnected the CD player and have been 100% vinyl since. What I learned along the way is that a ton of music exists that I didn't know about. Its easy to find a box of records for nothing and I always find a few real keepers.

I haven't listened to vinyl since around 1980...I had a ton of cassettes until around 1992...then made the switch to cds (about 400)....

now all of my cds are in my 60 gb iPod...

That's 90% of the reason I got into vinyl. I love picking up a box of mystery albums and thumbin' through them. You never know what you are going to find!

I didn't realize this was an ancient thread when I posted earlier. Kinda funny seeing some of the folks post 2 years ago that have now converted into true vinyl luvers (Troy, UNC,...)

I'm 70-80% normally, but have been 100% for the past few months. Moved, and haven't opened my box of CDs yet. That Sutherland is a religion, I keep hauling out old stuff I haven't listened to for years.

I haven't had much luck finding boxes of LPs anymore. :( They all seemed to dry up around here about 3-4 years ago. Most of the thrift stores even ditched their record areas or shrunk them to match incoming inventory, usually comprised of old folks cheesy stuff.

Currently using an AR-XA with a Shure M91-ED. Looking to upgrade as soon as I can get the bucks together. I'm probably 50/50 vinyl/cd, but the vinyl absolutely smokes the cd's for sound quality.

Added a Rega P5/Exact cartridge/TT PSU to my rig. I listen to vinyl about 20% of the time (20% LP; 35% CD; 45% iPod). The vinyl is definitely the better sounding media.

i know what you mean.. but some receivers/pre amp's are better at it. i hooked up my TT to a Luxman R-3055 receiver recently before I sold it.. and the subsonic rumble was really bad.. i switched on the rumble filter and it took about 80% of it out.. it was ok after that.

Then I hooked up the TT to my Kenwood/NAD seperates and almost no subsonic rumble without any kind of filter turned on.. so it's weird when it rears it's ugly head.

I have a Technics SL-BD20 belt-drive turntable that I have been meaning to hook up. I was going to buy a phono pre-amp for it when I came across a NOS Sony integrated amp with a MC/MM phono stage build-in. I got the amp but haven't connected the two yet.

Even though the Technics is an expensive TT, it's not "cheap" at all. Planning to get some aftermarket interconnects, power cord, and vibrapods for it.

For every 100 LPs I listen to I may listen to 1 or 2 CDs or SACDs. I will go through spurts however. About a month ago, I listened to the CD box set of Led Zepplin's "Complete Studio Recordings." The funny thing is that while I was listening, the only LP of those recordings that I had available (demolded) was Led Zepplin III and that LP sounds like shit. It was poorly recorded and I can't listen to it; I have to listen to the CD. When I get to my LPs of Led Zepplin that all need to be demolded, then I will know better if they are bad too.

I've been thinking about just replacing my LZ LP collection with the new 180 gm releases of all the LZ LPs.

Anyhoo, no surprise here, I listen almost exclusively to LPs as a matter of fact since I got my turntable up and running the beginning of February, I've listened to over 180 LPs (not counting how many times I may have repeated listening to particular LPs) that's an average of 36 LPs per month. That doesn't seem like a lot to me.

Found out a week or so ago that my subsonic filter on my pre amp had been engaged the whole time I've been listening to mine. I meant to tell you before, honest. When I disengaged it those mid drivers started to jump around like Daffy Duck. Only time it's really noticeable is on the lead in grooves. I can hear it, too, but not at levels where I feel like I'm doing damage to anything. I'm going to play around with (what I think is) the loading switch on my pre to see if that helps.

I've got 2 good quality Music Hall tables that I use quite regularly. Then an old Technics direct drive automatic for sorting through stuff.

My most recent TT though is a little portable battery operated Numark (only $85)so that I can test out records at places that don't have a listening station. This thing is a must have for the average vinyl hunter.

What do you listen for on the Numark? It is very hard to determine ticks, pop, crackling etc. . . I've had my hands on perfectly minty looking records that sounded like a microphone in a bowl of rice krispies.

Sorry for the delay. Haven't been getting all of my e-mail notices.

Anyway to answer your question.....It's great for finding new stuff I'm unfamiliar with, and also getting an idea of the actual condition of an album.

I too have been fooled by the appearance of an album before. The primary one that comes to mind is a copy of Pink Floyd - The Wall. Both the records and sleeves looked great, but that thing ticks and pops terribly.

I try to keep the old spinner active. I make sure he gets a couple of laps around the park on a daily basis. ;)

Geritol and some gentle laxatives keeps him fit. Too much information?

On a less serious note, I visited a dealer in the nearest city. He really wanted to demo a CD-R he'd made. The source, he told me, was a buddy's high-end turntable. He dropped the CD in the player and pressed "Play." At once, the room filled with whooshing, popping, and crackling noises.

"Yep, that sure sounds like vinyl," I said, as I walked out. :D

I can deal with the ticks and pops, at least a reasonable amount, however, when a record sounds like there is a mic in a bowl of rice krispies, that is where I draw the line.

I have a really, really great recording of Wagners, "Ride of the Valkyrie" that is a Sheffield direct to disk that is very crackly but the music and engineering is so good that I can just listen past the rice krispies.
