I was thinking of upgrading my dvd player. I have a panasonic s35.
I dont want to spend much more than $300 till I see whats doing to happen with the dvds.
I was looking at denon 2200 for $300 audiogon; denon 1920 for $250e-bay;or azur 540d demo for $330.

Would any of these make a big difference in my system? Does anyone have a different dvd player I should be looking at?

When I stepped up from a $130.00 dollar player to my Denon it was a very noticable difference. The colors really popped out and it is just overall a much better picture.

How about the Panny S77 or S97? Both excellent players, both can be had NEW for under $300 bones.

If I had to do it all over again I would have stepped up to an ES model or most certainly something from Denon.

Are you looking for a player for video purposes only or are you going to use it as a universal player for SACD/DVD-A/CD?

If you are only interested in improved video quality, then the Panasonic S77 is the way to go. It has top notch video output, but not much in the way of audio.
If you are looking for a "universal" player, the Denon 2200 is about the lowest I would go. It is a solid unit, but I think you can find it lower than $300 (the last few on Ebay were around $200). The Cambridge is a fine unit, but I don't think it does SACD. You might be able to get into a used Denon 2900 or 3800 for just a little more and you would make a pretty big jump in the audio quality. If you can find a Yamaha DVD-s2300Mk2, that is also a good choice.

billbillw- Thanks for the come back. I am looking for a universal player. I am 50/50 music/ht. I burn alot of my own cd's. So I quess the panasonic is out.

Jeffrey B-I've read good things about the sony es but(from what I read) they don't recognize cd-r discs.

That's correct, they do not offically recognize CR-Rs but some owners have reported positive results depending on the quality of the CD-R and the burners. I personnaly use my sony ES for DVDs - not much music listening. JEFF

If you can find a deal on a denon 2900 go for it,the audio is much better than the 2200.I had the 2200 for about 2 weeks and had a problem with the power button so I retuned it and picked up the 2900 and found that the audio difference was well worth the price difference ,the video is the same in both units.

Gotta correct you on that one. The Video on the 2900 is notably better than the 2200 even though they appear to use the same deinterlacing solution.

Well, I guess I will keep an eye out for a denon 2900. Is there a big difference between the 2900 and the 2910?

Yes, there is quite a difference.

The 2910 was actually the replacement for the 2200. It uses a a completely different deinterlacing solution and it includes upconverting through the DVI and HDMI outputs. The 2910 is not a bad player, but it is different in many ways. The 2900 is considered a better player for both audio and video, unless you desire an upconverting player.

Just bought a denon dvd-2900 off ebay. $400 shipped with cables- 18 months old, 9/10. It never had any updates because he said it always worked fine. But he said before he shipped he would get it updated if I wanted.

Sould I let him update the player or just go with it because it has no problems?

I have a hitachi 46f500 w/s tv. It is 2 years old and will be a while before I can upgrade the tv. I plan to use the only dvi jack on the tv for my charter dvr player when one comes available form charter.The dvi jack does not work on this dvr. I think this is going to be the best I can do for now anyway (at least 5 years before a new tv). Plus I already bought the 2900.

so---do I get the denon upgraded or leave whats not broken alone?

Some consider the Denon 2900 as the best progressive scan DVD player ever made!!

I think you bought a great DVD player and the choice to upgrade the firmware should be made on how it performes! I've been looking for a DVD player also and I think I'm going to go with a Denon 2900 also!

Check out the Pioneer DV-588A. I have one and was amazed at the performance for the price $129. It plays CDs, DVDs, SACD, DVD-Audio, Solby Surround, DTS, etc. Amazing quality and value. Can't go wrong for the price. I tested this against the Pioneer elite model (something retailiers don't like to do) it does not have the additional bells and whistles, but the sound and picture quality are the same.

Josh, maybe you don't realize it, but the Oppo only does deinterlacing (progressive) through its DVI connection. Only interlaced through the component video. This doesn't work for everyone. Also, the Oppo is not known for its audio quality. The Denons are.
