One of my favorite live albums of all time is Emerson,Lake,and Palmer.I had it on vinyl in the 80's,but I have never seen it on cd,has anybody?

I found it,it was originally titled in concert,1979 in Olympic stadium,Montreal.Its now on the rhino label as works,live,and has been expanded...I know that fanfare for the common man was not on it,on this expanded version it is...the best intro of all time....ladies and gentlemen...emerson,lake,and palmer!...into peter gunn....is the shitz

Forget 1979. By 1979, they were tired and hated each other.

Instead, look for the DVD of "Pictures at an Exhibition" (Ventura Distribution). It's a small show, close up on stage, no special effects... And it's 1971. They were in love with each other, and loved playing with each other (it shows!), and the short show is super amazing.

And nothing beats 1973's triple live LP, "Welcome Back My Friends..."

After about 1975 or so, they were really spent. (And I didn't get to see them till the mid-80s. But I got to see them in small venues, and even met Keith once at Hammerjacks! KEITH!)

Check out the early stuff to see them really BURN!

Micah, as usual you are dead wrong. "Love Beach" was by far their best album.

Okay I'm just kidding. I still listen to "Welcome Back.." frequently. A great live live album, although it probably could have been editied down to two LPs. And thanks for the heads up on the "Pictures" DVD...I didn't know that was available. Will have to look for that.

On another note, were they still playing together in the 80's? I thought they had gone their seperate ways by then...Carl Palmer with Asia and Greg Lake and Keith Emerson vanishing off the face of the earth...

"Love Beach" was by far their best album.

:) You know what? The second side, "An Officer & A Gentlemen," is very good ELP. It was over by then, lamentably; they hated each other and their label and "Love Beach" was a contractial obligation (as was "Works" etc.). But the second side works, inexplicably. Gay cover photo, tho.

In the 80s I saw both "3," with E and P and some other guy singing, and "ELP" with E and L and Cozy Powell on drums. Either way, I was there merely to see Keith tear up the house, the best rock keyboardist ever, and to see them do my personal fave song, "Pirates," with Lake singing.

Everyone left Hammerjacks after the show, and I wandered back to the rear bathrooms. Standing in the hallway was Keith Emerson, in his black leather suit. He had been oogling the chick I was with all night (we were literally leaning on the stage the whole night, 4 feet from him), and I walked up and said, "Keith? I've been a fan for years." He was very nice, shook my hand, and said a word or two, and then got called away. Fucking Keith Emerson man. I have not washed my hand since.

Find the DVD of the 1970 "Pictures" show, it's available on Netflix and at Amazon.com. It will slay you. They are a tremendous band of monsterous talent. But as I said, it was all over by '75. After that, it was all "reunions."

Keith Emerson is the best.

Oh, and I saw Asia "in the round" at the US Open stadium in Flushing Hills. They were pretty awesome, but they were a pale imitation of Yes and ELP. Geoffrey Downes is like the poor man's Rick Wakeman. Greg's voice was still magnificent, tho, and carried the day, and Carl was still a drummer to be reckoned with. You wanted them to be so much better than they really were. After you see Keith in action, even Rick Wakeman is boring and lame. Still, it was cool to see them as "Asia."

No, seriously. She was a hot hardbody rock chick straight out of a ZZTop video. My life used to be fucking great, man. And we were leaning our arms up on the stage right in front of Keith, he destroyed a keyboard right in front of our faces, and he spent the whole night looking down and nodding and jesturing to this chick. She was a great chick. I'd have shared her with Keith in a second if he asked. "Sure, Keith, by all means, you can have her for the night. Thank you so much!"

I used to rock, man. No fooling. Life is cruel.

Yes I was going to mention the really gay cover of Love Beach but thought it might be too obscure to mention...silly me.
Dead on about Asia...lots of talent there...but man they were cheesy. Of course it was the era of cheese. I did like them, sorta...I mean I was like 14...what did I know?
Totally forgot Emerson Lake and Powell and "3", nice recall on your part. I never got to see Keith Emerson...would have been a real treat I'm sure.

Okay I'm going to have to listen to ELP's "Trilogy" now. My favorite of their studio albums.

Keith is amazing. I mean, he's just unreal. Seeing him live is a total treat. (Again, I recommend the DVD of the 1970 "Pictures at an Exhibition" show. It will amaze you. When was the last time you were amazed by a band?) There may be good keyboard players -- Wakeman, Jon Lord of course, and maybe someone else, whatever it's late I'm tired and have had much beer -- but no one touches Keith Emerson. He's unstoppable, untoppable, and astounding. Seeing him with his wall of keyboard electronics, massive conglomerations of ancient synth stuff, and hearing the incredible sounds he gets out of that stuff, is just ungodly.

What makes him a true rock god, is that he has real reverence for the music of the past, rock and classical, and he is able to make all of it original again in new ways. It's worth seeking out his early early stuff with The Nice as well, to hear him rock up loads of obscure classical works. He's a riot.

I am sure that some form of elderly ELP is still touring. If you get a chance, you should see them just to see Keith. Carl is like a zombie, and Greg's voice is gone. But Keith is still a master pianist, and still the greatest keyboard player in rock.

Micah- not that I'm going to discredit your opionions, but all of the reviews of the DVD of Pictures at an Exhibition are fairly negative. Apparently they used some "psychadelic" effects to spice things up a little? And it just ended up detracting from the show? Any thoughts?

Well, yes. The makers of the DVD used some heinous effects towards the end of the show to, I dunno, spice things up. They are useless, a montage of -- I dunno -- Marvel Comics images and crap like that, which have nothing at all to do with what's going on, and they get in the way of what was, up to that moment, an amazing thing to watch. Listen, just ignore that crap. It only happens near the end, and only for some extended jam bit, and then it goes away. Otherwise, the performance is just awesome.

I can't explain why someone would do that to this show. That person should be found and sacked, and never allowed to produce show effects again.

But the DVD is worth a rental to see them young and hungry and amazingly talented.

Yeah, an old thread, but thought it would be the right place to post this.

I hit the JACKPOT on ebay; bought the "ELP Works Vol. 1" for $1.99, and both records look and sound like they have never been played!!!! Awesome.

I'm having so much fun getting records and discovering music again....so many memories brought to life ;)

Great find...this thread is personally nostalgic to me as well. I saw ELP every chance I could from 71 on. I held KE in high regard for his showmanship and musical ability (almost as much as Micah). By the 80s they were done...the music was too bombastic to listen to anymore...I faded away from music. A few years ago I picked them up again, the early stuff through Works Vol 1. I can listen again, relive my youth when I close my eyes and still get amazed.

Troy, I heard that rumor too...don't know if it's true, but ol'Keith was probably scoping Micah not his gf. :eek:
