View Full Version : Anyone ready for a Genesis reunion....possibly w/ Peter Gabriel

I had the phone call recently from Genesis' manager: "Do you think you guys would like to have a meeting to talk about the future?" Let's just say that there's a move afoot to put us all together again. When that will happen, I don't know, but I think it's inevitable that something that has had such a lasting effect ... I mean, the Musical Box sold out the Royal Albert Hall in London!

I don't even really know those guys [in Genesis] these days; all I can really say is that I hope we do something. I doubt that we'll write something new, but that would be a gas! Just to come in and say, "We don't have to remember anything, let's do something new, just to see what we play like these days." That would be nice, but you've got people working different ways and at very different pace. But I do think something will happen -- whether it's a recreation of the past or anything new, I don't know.

Quoted from Steve Hackett interview (http://www.suntimes.com/output/derogatis/wkp-news-live14.html) with Chicago Sun-Times dated 10/14/2005.

Also rumors of meeting between Genesis members on November 20th. Maybe do several shows to promote hi-rez Genesis releases?

I personally like Phil Collins.

You really don't know?

Phil Collins was the drummer of Genesis. He took over lead vocals after Peter Gabriel departed. When that happened, there was a change in musical style for the band, going from progressive rock to more pop-oriented songs. Which, of course, leads to the never-ending argument about Peter Gabriel vs. Phil Collins between fans. Kind of like David Lee Roth vs. Sammy Hager with Van Halen.

And just in case you REALLY don't know, Phil Collins was also the drummer for the jazz fusion group Brand X while he was with Genesis.

Back to the subject of the thread....

Assuming Peter Gabriel decline to participate in a reunion, the 4-member lineup of Genesis is still very good....Banks, Collins, Hackett and Rutherford can still bring in a lot of fans.

Don't know who Kevin Costner is, don't know Phil was the man in Genesis (esp the later stuff). Those are from today, I've seen several other like that from you in the past...

I know you're young, but hell I'm only 27 and I still know this stuff...you need to enroll in a pop culture class at your local community college. I hate pop culture, but it's still stuff you're gonna want to know down the road...

FWIW, I prefer the early Genesis stuff with Peter much more than the later stuff. Granted, the later stuff produced more hits, but I like the earlier stuff better...

Anyone caught a recent interview of Peter Gabriel on the entertainment/gossip TV show "Extra"? When asked about a possible Genesis reunion, Gabriel said he will meet with the other members of the band and talk things over.

Stay tune.

In the meantime, check out this recent interview of Phil Collins on Genesis....possible reunion....various members of Genesis....not able to play 70s Genesis drum parts anymore....Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame....various songs.....

Interesting read (http://hit.demonhosting.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi/YaBB.cgi?board=PCSolo;action=display;num=110890347 9)

Well, the possibility of a Genesis reunion made the "front page" of Yahoo News today.

In the meantime, check out Phil Collins playing drums behind the Genesis tribute band, The Musical Box, in the below link. Also check out the documentation video that feature Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett.

Btw, on the previous link, Genesis last frontman, Ray Wilson, does a pretty good job on an unplugged version of "Mama".

Cool! I saw Genesis with Peter Gabriel in 1974. 15 rows from the front in a small venue. WOW! What I wouldn't give to be back there again.

No official word from Genesis or Phil Collins. But the following was posted on Peter Gabriel's official website....

Genesis Reunion
This has been the main topic of conversation recently and many of you have written in asking for the official word. I'm told that sadly, there is no truth in it; this rumour seems to come and go every few years and we think that this particular one has been fuelled by the fact that Phil, Peter and Steve Hackett have all been interviewed lately in connection with their solo careers and they are always asked about the Band. They all say the same thing; that they remain good friends and although there are no specific plans, they would not rule out the possibility at some time - although getting the five of them together would prove too hard given their various solo commitments.

c'mon - this is the endless argument - Styx with or without Tommy Shaw, Genesis with or without Peter Gabriel, The Who with or without Keith Moon...

Take them for what they are - Genesis with Phil instead of Peter Gabriel was still very good - just differrent - are you trying to tell me that Duke was a purely pop based album? ABACAB? And Then There Were Three? No - Phil Collins just beat us all to death with his solo career - it ain't like Solisbury Hill, In Your Eyes, and SledgeHammer are all high brow music kids... (all Pete solos) be real!

Not trying to piss anyone off - but That's exactly my point - it is all subjective - Scott/Young, Roth/Hagar, Howe/Rabin, Gabriel/Collins, they all added something different. And I could easily see Gabriel having done anthing on the Duke album, yes. Progressive that one. Maybe not so much ABACAB - but Duke definintely.

Peter Gabriel I'd pay to see again any day.

Gabriel's been on my list of people to see. I highly recommend Secret World Live. I had it on both disk and VHS. Haven't seen it on DVD, but it should be great. Paula Cole sings a strong backup and is featured a good bit in the video.

Phil Collins has put out some weak ass crap over the last ten years (or longer.) Same old, same old, cookie cutter stuff. If he was a cookie, it would be a Girl Scout Cookie, and a Tagalong at that!

Weaker and sappier than Against All Odds, which is a decent song. He could give Elton John a run for sappiest crap right alongside Elton's Lion King
gar-bauge....Heck, Dan Fogelberg and Firefall rock out more than Collins has over the last decade.:D AB, don't even ask about Fogelberg, not worth explaining. Don't know how many have even heard of Firefall, but you aren't missing anything....

Su,su, Sudio....That was good stuff.

Now, a Genesis reunion with Gabriel, I'm all in.:)

Latest comments (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080118/music_nm/gabriel_dc;_ylt=AsG.IK9lrlIOZwvv6ja_BINxFb8C) from Peter Gabriel about a possible reunion with Genesis....

I was trying to get to the Rome (show), but if they do another (tour leg), I'll try to get there.

We had discussions about (my taking part), but the time commitment they wanted was growing, and I knew with trying to get the Elders going, I wasn't going to be able to do both. I'm not in principle against the idea of doing something.

"Peter Gabriel would have no objection to full Genesis reunion".....

http://www.gigwise.com/news/48557/Peter-Gabriel-Would-Have-No-Objection-To-Full-Genesis-Reunion

Former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel has said he would have “no real objection” to a full reunion of the band.

Gabriel didn't take part in the group's 2007 tour, which included 20 dates around the world.

At the time, he said he was “happy” that drummer Phil Collins, bassist Mike Rutherford and guitarist Tony Banks were touring, but wanted to concentrate on his own material.

However, in a new interview with Word, Gabriel said: "In principle I have no real objection to playing with Genesis at some point in the future."

Gabriel hasn't performed with his former band since he left the group in 1975.

Guitarist Tony Banks??!!

It's nice to see this but I have serious doubts. Even on the most recently released 1970-1975 box set interviews he said that he had a hard enough time ditching the ex-Genesis label in the eighties, that he didn't want to re-visit it again. Very weak argument if you ask me. Most people think Genesis was a top 40 hit machine from the 80's unless you are a fan of the band. One reunion tour isn't going to effect his public image. The interview on the box set is from 2007 so he looks to have possibly changed his mind... I'm not holding my breath, and I don't think anybody else is either. :)

Given Genesis is one of the nominees for the 2010 Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame induction, and I'm betting the group will get in, perhaps this may be the only upcoming possible occasion for the group to reunite with the classic lineup.

I would love to see it happen, for a number of reasons. The most obvious, to just see them all together again on last time, however I would also get a kick out of seeing what songs they would do. With the exception of The Carpet Crawlers, I can't see many in the R'nR HoF audience recognizing or even getting the songs that they would play with that line up. They could smash all expectations and play Back in NYC! That would be awesome...

Genesis can always put Chester Thompson in the drummer's seat. After all, he's been part of Genesis' touring band since the late 70s.

If Phil Collins stays on the drums and does not contribute in any other way, and Peter Gabriel is in then it would be great if Gabriel and Hacket returned. I could tolerate a little of Collins vocals if they toured and did some of the early Collins led Genesis, but please don't try to squeeze in solo Collins or Mike and the Mechanics.
