I found a local seller who has a set of Polk Bookshelf speakers for sale but he doesn't know the model number, but says they are about 8 years old and in great shape.

What possible models do you think they are? RT15/25/35? Were there any other models out around 1996-1998?

For the price he's asking, I think they are a steal no matter what.

I'd tell him to look at the sticker on the back. Or measure the woooofers.

8 years old would make them RT3's, RT5's, or RT7's. If they are one of those three, or the ones you mentioned, they would be well worth the money. If they are the RT5, with a soft dome tweeter, or the RT7, with the trilaminate dome tweeter, then you should definetely pick them up.

I think he had them packed up or something. He made it sound like it was too much trouble to find out the model #. For what he's asking, I'll take um no matter what. I'm just curious.

Okie, thanks for the info.

If they are RT7s or RT55s, run with check in hand. :D

They may be nice surround or second sytem regardless of the model. I use my RT-25s for a brother-in-law system. Allowing him to use them has truly improved his appreciation of good sound without breaking his bank since he wouldn't spend his hard earned $$$ on a good set.

Well, the seller is flaking out now. He said he thinks he wants to keep the speakers now. I think he realized they were worth a quite a bit more than what he was asking ($20). I told him that if that is what was making him change his mind, I might make him an offer significantly higher depending on the speaker model they are. He said he would consider that and now he is willing to figure out which model they are. I'm supposed to call him tonight.

Lesson of the day: When offered Polk speakers for $20. Jump on them and ask questions later!

I did "jump" on them, but the seller never gave me the chance to actually get them and he has since decided not to sell them so cheap.

Finally talked to the guy again. I don't know what the heck he was selling. He said there was no model number or anything on the back. He described them as black wood about 10" x 5" having one woofer about 4" and one tweeter, or as he described a "star shaped thing". I imagine his measurements are off by at least an inch on everything. He started to act like a jerk about it when I was asking him questions so I just told him that I wasn't interested.

From his description, I don't think they had a dome tweeter, so they were probably low end speakers that maybe came as part of a home theater package or something.
