Which Towers Are The Best For Home Theater - RTi8's Or RTi10's

The question is, which towers in the RTi Series are best for home theater. The RTi8's or the RTi10's.

Any thoughts??

I don't think there is an answer to your question; I have the 8's with a good sub and cannot be happier; I know many people here prefer the 10's, and others the 12's. Best advice would be listen and decide, but you can't go wrong with any of those three.....

But I would say that if you're not going to have a sub, the 10s would be better. If you're going to have a sub, then get whichever you want...

I had the 8's at first, and they were great. I got the 10's for the same price on an upgrade from Circuit City, and like them as well. If price is an issue, go the cheaper route, if not listen to them both to see what you like best and go from there. The 8's are excellent with a sub and so are the 10's. Some say the 10's are not very good in the mid range department, but even with my 85 watts per channel, the 10's do it for me on highs, mids, and lows. I like the 10's better IMO. Good luck on your choice.

I will be using a sub. I have listened to both and like both. I use the RTi70 towers right now and enjoy them. I would think that they are comparable to the RTi8's.

The sub I currently own is a Polk PSW10. I was thinking that if I went with the 8's then I would upgrade my sub. If I went with the 10's, I may not need to upgrade as the 10's have 2-7" subs and the 8's only have the two mids.

Again, I use my system for 90% home theater.

I was referring to your decision between the RTi8 and RTi10: assuming one's higher frequencies are not better than the other's (which seems to be a debated point), then for HT I'd get the one with the most bass - the RTi10.

As for subs, Polk is not known for good subs. In keeping with that, the PSW10 only goes down to 40Hz (at -3db). I'm not sure where most of the bass in movies is, but you're missing a lot. So, I'd say yes; a sub upgrade should be in the works.

Hopefully, your receiver has lots of crossover setting options. If it can get down to 60Hz or even 50Hz before the sub kicks in, you'll use more of the bass from your Polks. Buying RTi10s, just to cross them over at 80Hz seems like a big waste to me.

I agree with that, but I'd still cross the 8s @ 60, just blends better to my ears with towers.

I would think no matter what towers you get, you should still get a new sub, even a middle of the range sub would be a big improvement.
I have the 8's paired with an energy sub. In my current set up this is more than I need. I have the sub turned down 3/4 of the way(neighbors).

How big is your room? If the size is no bigger than 14'x16' you would be good with the Rti8's and your sub for now. Somewhere down the line upgrading your sub should be considered.

I have a medium size room, 13'x18' approximately.

My room is 13’x17’ and the Rti8’s are just fine, but my Sony receiver is not doing them any justice for now. I ordered new Denon AVR3806 receiver, which should be here soon and make my Rti8’s sing.

I will be using a Pioneer Elite 56TXi receiver along with a Pioneer M-10X two channel amp. I want to bi-amp either the 8's or 10's and use the amp to power my surrounds.

Your Pioneer Elite with 110W x7 and Rti8’s up front will sound cool. Go for the Rti8’s and save your $$ for a nice SVS sub. With good sub you don’t need Rti10’s.

It sounds like you have an excellent set-up as well. I thought that if I go with the 10's then I would not have to spend as much on a sub as the 10's have the two 7" woofers, more lower end than the 8's. I have the RTi70's right now which I would expect are very similar to the 8's. I do want to step up a level for my front's but like you said, do I just save with the 8's an buy an much better sub. The other thing is, the 10's often go on sale for the same price as the 8's.

You are abviously a Denon fan, did you compare the Denons and the Elites??

No I didn’t compare Denon with Elite. Getting a good deal on 3806 so I’m taking it.

I agree on the sub. I use my system for 90% HT. I listened to the Denon's an found them a bit bright compared to the Elites. The Elites are warmer which is what I prefer. Denon would have been my second choice but like you, I got a great deal on the Elite, could not turn it down...

The 8's are definately brighter than the 10's. I find the 10's have a warmer sound (best description I could come up with). There are a few claims on this site that the 10's mids are not there. Right now, my RTi70's have two mids and a tweeter. I figure that if the 10's have one tweeter, one mid and two woofers, the sound stage should be larger and the mids still present. For HT they should be perfect!!

I agree 100%. Another thing I thought of was, if I set my speakers to small so all the low frequency sound go's to the sub, the woofers on the 10's would be useless for movies, am I correct??

Not useless but less effective. By setting them to large you are asking you receiver to push lots. Small would have the a good reserve of juice for the mids and highs. If you wanted the best of both worlds then get the 10s and a good sub. As mentioned with my 8s and a good sub, I couldn't be happier well I could, but that's part of upgrading.
