currently i am using a yamaha rx-v3300 receiver and rotel 990bx amp and lsi15 speakers. i am not getting really good sound out of lsi15, any idea to improve sound? is there any member out there with this setup? using the pre-out on the yamaha, it seems i can only use preset eq modes and not able to run stereo modes. my friend will bring over an adcom pre/pro later in the week to see if my receiver is the problem. i would really want to keep the yamaha, but it might be that i am not able to program it correctly. thx, for your input..

What kinda source are you using? Perhaps upgrade your source player be it CD or DVD. Ideally look for a very good 1 box solution. A separate DAC can be had but at an extra cost when factoring in the digital interconnect.

Most likely, your Yammie is the weak link but we need to know what you're using as source as well.

I'm leaning toward the yammie as well. save up, go with a tube pre and dont look back :) ......................... and might as well tell us what the source is too

Going tube pre/ss amp was the best thing I did for my LSi9.

Fellas, he didn't ask about tubes, can you try to stop shoving them down everyone's throat?

Now Millennium, you have plenty of power going to your main speakers, so I would say that I think that the problem is probably your Yammie.

Now the main question is what is the rest of your system? Since you are using just a 2 channel amp for the LSI's, will you have the amps for the rest of your speakers when you go to a separate pre-pro? Or are you just a 2 channel guy?

Things will certainly improve w/a separate pre-pro. You could get a Rotel, Outlaw ect.

What are you using for interconnects? How much do you want to spend?

WoW..Ms. Frizz
easy girl... :D

I like the yammie with my Lsi`s as a pre/pro, and Rotels as the amps driving the speaks...yes seperates make a huge difference...

as Ms. Frizz said...I/C`s also make a big difference..

I will take it easy Bear just as soon as all of you tube heads stop pushing tubes into every question about gear! If someone asks about them fine, but if not why even bring it up?

I remember I think Laura was asking about receivers & someone went on a tear about tuners! Practically derailed the whole thread!

I'm sorry but not all roads lead to tubes! :D

Now give us a comparo between the Denon, Rotel/Para & LSI's

I think I actually liked the Rotel/Denon better than the Para/Denon..

It seemed to be a little brighter, more detailed..

not as much power as the Para, but the Rotel had the fronts and center, and the Denon had rears..

and this of course was with the RT55i`s, RT38i`s, and CSi40 center..

The Rotels can handle 4 ohm, but sadly the Denon can not..

You got a point Cfrizz, but I was just under the immpression that he was only doing 2 channel in the first place, which was why spending 3-400 on a good tube pre over that yammie would solve all the problems in my eyes. That advise wont hold if he is doing home theater. In that case, a seperate pre pro is a good way to go, but gotta have amps for all channels.

Millenium, you said you use this as home theater, is it 2 channel home theater or multichannel? I could have swore that yammie you mentioned was 2 channel (hence my confusion) but I could be wrong.

either way, gotta know what direction your going in, because the advise will varry depending. If your goal is 2 channel, I gotta stand by the tube pre suggestion. With that Rotel amp and the LSI's I genuinly feel that is the best road hands down. I dont feel as if I am pushing tubes with that advice.

now, if your in, or going into multichannel (5.1 etc), there is different roads depending on budget. a seperate pre pro with the Rotel is great, but you will need to power 3 more channels (that Rotel is 2 channel's right?) Another option might be getting a quality reciever (maybe used) with a pre out. power the mains with the Rotel and the other channels with the reciever. I would go with the all seperates myself, but it might be a big step depending on your budget constraints.

I agree..

I used Rotel 980`s for the front and center, and let the Denon do the rears..

WAY better than just the Denon..Imho of course..

now I have a 5 ch amp...very nice, but the Rotel / Denon route was very nice also..

all depends on how much space you have and what your budget is..

I prefer seperate rigs for 2ch & HT, but I`m a sicko....
and very broke..!!

LOL! Poor Bear! ;) :D

The only thing that I will stick by is if you have a receiver, make sure it has pre-outs so that you can get separate amplification later on down the line. It makes a WORLD of difference along with the receiver!

I have no idea how anybody could recommend this poor lad a more expensive pre/pro tube or SS amp when he's mentioned what his source is. For two channel music a source is the NUMBER 1 concern without question. A better source player will always improve sound. A tube pre will color an already inferior signal.

How about telling people here what you dont like about the sound of your system? Is it the bass response, lack of air, sterile flat sounding music....or what? This would help in getting some more focused responses....

i am currently using as a 2 ch, but will add center and rears when budget allows. the yamaha has pre outs and puts out 130x6 to all channels, right now the music does not sound right. not bright and precise when listening to music. a friend will bring an adcom pre/pro over in a few days, maybe then i can see if it will make a big difference. right now i am using audiosource gold plate rca ass interconnect. if anyone has a good pair for sale cheap, i'll be interested. i just spent money buying rotel amp, and speakers, so don't have a lot of money to spend now. the lady of the house is not in a happy mode.

make sure that you don't have any kind of DSP on w/ the yammie...

In fact, get it out of the chain completely-if you have something with a variable output (walkman, ipod, etc), you can hook that straight to the rotel. just make sure you start out with the volume all the way down.

I think we need to debug before we start telling him to buy new gear. Hell, check the Red/black on your speaker wires- if ones out of phase, you could get crappy sound like you describe.

Fellas, he didn't ask about tubes, can you try to stop shoving them down everyone's throat?

He asked how he could improve his system. Do you really think using a Yammie receiver as pre is going to cut it for his LSi?

We gave him advice and didn't force him to buy anything. We also asked him what he was using as source.

i found the problem, i used the wrong preouts. i used the front effect instead of the front main. now i hear a diffenece, but after listening to the adcom as my processor the sound is a little better. maybe next i should look for a rotel pre/pro. thx for everyone's input.

Sounds great. Glad you were able to find the problem. You can look for a used unit. Brand new pre/pro can cost quite a bit. I believe Outlaw makes the cheapest pre/pro right now and I've heard great things about it.
