was approached by a classmate asking what kind of 6.75 speakers i would reccomend, naturally db675s or the momos. he looks at the specs and says "only 50 watts rms?!?" i have a 600 watt amp. his old pioneer 50 ways were rated at a gazillion watts and im thinking, is that a thermal rating, or just a shot in the dark? how are the max wattages for the polks calculated? why do i bother talking to these people? lol so many questions

it's not how big it is, it's how you use it:D... for polk, the RMS is the maximum continuous power that can be put through the speakers using a specified test tone, and the max rating is twice that... others' max powers are four times their rms, or as much as the speaker can take over a fraction of a second without destroying its own suspension (for the really flea-markety companies)...

yeah, the amp he was talking about was a visonik, looked cheap, plus it was fried... so that whole plan = out the window

Max ratings are totally irellevant so tell your friend to ignore them.

Also, running 600 watts to the front stage is just stupid. Why not make a motorcyle with 600 horsepower? However he's probably using the max rating of the amp so its more than likely a 250 watt amp.

Tell him to get the DB's and set the gains properly and he'll be fine. Then tell him to pull his pants up!

howd u know his pants were down, cause they werent... lol so quick to judge. I convinced him that the amp was crud and that the dbs were good, i gave him a demo with my db650s on stock deck power... :D

Usually when somebody complains of the 50 watt rating on a speaker and wants to run 600 watts to the front stage, he usually has his pants around his knees, a minimum of 5 piercings in his face and his ballcap sideways. ;)

Ever heard of the turbo Hyabusa? :D Oh yeah, i think he'll be hard pressed to find a component set that can handle 600 watts. If pure SPL is the goal, then using multiple sets of speakers in the front is the way to go.

Dodge Tomahawk... 550 horsepower motorcycle. V10 Viper engine strapped between the chassis of a bike. Instead of headlights, it has twin throttle bodies in that spot.

Visonik is like a step up from Jensen. Not the old Jensen that was worth something but current Jensen which is like owned by Audiovox which is pep Boys bargain aisle material.

The only good thing about Visonik is thier ads have scantily clad women all over them. That's usually a plus in my book, even if the "models" are trashy looking. They do have a nice shade of red on thier gear too. But, like they say, fast women and flashy gear doesn't...something...something....? Ok, if anyone actually said that I'll kick myself in the nuts.

"Fast women and flashy gear doesn't go over well with the wife or the accountant" - Tony the Fish, 1983, in his review of "Fleshdance" - a take on the later to be made movie "Flashdance", only better.
